I bought a laserdisc copy of Star Trek 2 at a thriftstore a while back. I meant to hang it on my wall, but I never got around to it.

Are the laserdisc versions of the star wars movies still the best ones? By the best I mean the highest quality versions that don't have that goofy extra poo poo Lucas edited into them.

There are like 50 billion fan edits on the internet using the blurays as video source whenever possible and whatnot.

Today I saw that there is apparently a DUB version of that "backstroke of the west" pirate subtitle track for the third prequel, if you can even imagine that.

That's a drat shame. I don't go turbo nerd for star wars or anything but I'd like to be able to buy the original versions. Those newer ones really are stupid as poo poo.

I almost bought a LD player with a bunch of movies that was for sale on craigslist. No reason for it aside from nostalgia / novelty. Back when, they really were a shitload nicer looking than VHS. I especially remember the sound being super good.

AUNT GWEN'S COLD SHAPE (!)
We have the original (un"updated") Star Wars trilogy on VHS. It's kind of like having a relative on long term hospice. I know the tapes are gonna kick the bucket someday and it's really depressing. They probably haven't been stored properly (along with the other million vhses we owned), as evidenced by other VHS tapes from the same storage bin I've tried to watch recently. We had them all in the basement in a rubbermaid container. I have a TV in my room that has no cable hookup so all I can do is plug in my portable DVD player into it (which is kind of a pain int he rear end) or put in a VHS because it has a built in player, so a few months ago I decided to watch my old copy of Fantasia. So heartbreaking. I want to say the first 20 minutes were almost unwatchably garbled. At some point the warp eased up but there's still continual static throughout the entire thing. (Part of me bitterly wonders if, had we not kept it rewound, it would just be the last empty part of the tape that got hosed up and the content would have been safe, but who knows, tha'ts a long rear end movie, the fuzz/warp probably would have cut into Ave Maria had it been unrewound).

I remember being like 10 and popping in a VHS we hadn't played in a long time, something simple like just one of those random Looney Tunes collections or something. It was so messed up we just got a blue screen and a high pitched beeeeeeeeeeep. We thought maybe it was a problem with the player but I think a couple movies were like that. Tape goons, was it how we stored it, or were those lower-quality tapes? It doesn't really matter anymore, I'm just curious though.

Here's hoping Disney started working on a Blu Ray release of the original cuts as soon as Lucas ceased having a say in the matter.

Part of me thinks they already have an HD remaster of the unmodified originals ready and are holding off until the Episode 7 merch machine kicks into gear to maximize sales.

Yeah, VHS tapes aren't ageing well. I passed all of mine on to my dad about 10 years ago. Mine weren't ever abused but also not exactly preserved. When his VCR finally died last year most of those movies were just plain worn out. I got him a DVD player and passed my disc collection on to him. Hopefully DVDs will endure the rigors of time a little better. I know they won't degrade from repeated viewing but I've heard of cheaply made discs bubbling up on the label side. They can't be any worse than the old tapes.

I was kinda thinking that would happen when I heard Disney took over the franchise. They're gonna want back every last dime of the bajillion $$$ they paid. There's enough people that buy every single new version and old version as well as the people that just want to see the originals without that god damned singing whatever the gently caress that was in jabbas palace to make it worth their while.

They weren't much quieter when working properly. Used to be you would get a special printer stand for those dot matrix printers that had a noise muffling box to hold the printer, baskets for the paper underneath, and a slot cut through the bottom of the box to feed the paper. Sorta like this:

Even then everyone knew when you were using one. They take forever to die though. Even those old HP LaserJet's couldn't hold a candle to them in terms of reliability. Especially if you bothered to grease them every now and again.

The DVD is a fairly crappy transfer of the LaserDisc that is letterboxed instead of being actual widescreen and has lots of weird motion blurring and stuff going on. The highest quality way to see the original version is the fan made Despecialized Edition.

I had a co-worker who excitedly showed me record he bought from a thrift store and thought it was funny as it was the Total Recall soundtrack. Well that's what he thought...

It was the LD. I thought it was funny seeing were were in the editing rooms of our production company. I sifted through the e-waste and old equipment room and brought out a player. That was our afternoon production finished.

I'm still annoyed I had to sell off my LDs and Player about a year ago. Even had 'blue movies' as the old guy I bought them off called them.

How about porn on nitrate 35mm reels? There's going to be a symposium or what have you on old porn somewhere in England iirc this autumn. Had a look at our contribution a little while a go. Linda Williams of "Hard Core" fame (a groundbreaking book on porn narrative) will speak. 20-30s porn is just as graphic as today's porn. It surprised me somewhat, even though I should know better...

There are a few places on the internet where you can watch old porn, back to the 1920s or so. The two big differences I notice are body hair and body shape. More hair, more fat, more imperfect-looking people. But the sex is pretty much the same.

What is the oldest known porno? Are there skin flicks that are 100 years old already or do we need to wait a decade? Were 1920s porno theatres classy joints where you'd drink a brandy alexander and not remove your gloves while cranking it?

My Lovely Horse

I was gonna say I wouldn't be surprised if it started more or less as soon as the brothers Lumière got their project off the ground, turns out if Wikipedia can be believed that's pretty much literally the case. One entry mentions a lot of stripping in the early days, and the earliest hardcore scenes that can be dated popping up 1907-1910ish. Among those are a German film in which apparently no one shits on anyone else if you can believe it, and one that has the best plot summary I've ever read on Wikipedia:

quote:

Three young women are bathing in a river. This leads to them having sex with each other. Then the devil appears and forces one woman to perform oral sex on him. Then he has sex with all three.
They don't make them like they used to.

The earliest surviving pornographic film is L'Ecu d'Or ou la bonne auberge (1908). There are several other surviving films from around the same time, including Am Abend (1910) which has the earliest surviving anal scene, if that helps put things in perspective. It is generally believed that there were pornographic films made years before the earliest surviving films. Le Coucher de la Mariée (1896), for example, is believed to have been a pornographic film but only a fragment (involving a striptease) survives. For reference, the first film screening for an audience was in 1895.

Georges Méliès made a skin flick called Apres le Bath that involved a woman undressing and being showered with something that's supposed to be water but isn't by her maid. The most interesting part of the film is that because of the tight corset the woman wears, her rear end is almost square-shaped.

Older, likely. Humans have been making images of sexy things as long as we've been making images. Pornographic movies are really new but seriously, within days (well, hours more likely) of some new way to make images somebody will put breasts and penises in it.
