Wow, that does sound like a mess, lol. Our Mitch Mahoney in my most recent production was a girl who played it as a boy. We talked about making her "Midge" or "Madge" Mahoney but she wanted the challenge of playing a man, so we ran with it.

And yeah, understudying can be a loving clusterfuck if you don't plan ahead. When I was in Sweeney Todd I was understudying Anthony, which was all fine and good except that when he lost his voice on the morning of closing matinee we hadn't covered any of my poo poo in the show, and I was in a ton as an ensemble member. I ended up just doing a lot of it, but that was the last time that theatre group didn't rehearse their understudies more, haha.

I was in a horribly directed production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Edwin Drood allows the audience to choose the ending. The director was very, very confident that she could direct the audience to choosing specific outcomes.

Now, I can't sing worth a drat. I try really hard and I make do by being like a pigeon with a broken wing, just adorably incompetent.

Opening night of production the audience voted to have me perform a duet I had never rehearsed before. I managed to get through it without too much damage, but it was brutal.

The next performance the big finale song was performed by someone else who had never performed it. He lost track of his place and said "words words words, we never rehearsed this, why did you pick meeeee" with such charm and charisma that a not insignificant percent of the audience thought that was a legit part of the show.

I gave him my flask and got ahold of some cigarettes for him after the show. The man was a champ.

It's not even understudying, it's double cast, so different people are playing it in different performances. CLUSTERFUCK.

To be fair, I thought there were some really powerful scenes about gender identity and sexuality. I think I was more drawn in to the character's personal struggles than the sci fi stuff which is fine.

The last show I did at my old theatre was like that. There's a local festival in that town and they always do a play as part of that festival -- nine performances in a single week. This year they decided to use their spring show (January Thaw) as the festival show, so the play ran for eleven performances over three weekends, took a week off, then ran nine more during festival.

Since it's not a pro theatre and nobody is getting paid, everybody had scheduling conflicts so basically the whole show was double cast. I think there were only three actors who could make every performance date. So we'd have like, Herbert A and Barbara B and Jonathan A one night, then the next night it would be Herbert B, Barbara A, Jonathan A, then Herbert A, Barbara A, Jonathan B etc.

And then two of the actors abruptly quit the show a week and a half before open, so they called me and my dude to come fill in. Also the costumer was one of the people who quit.

Everything was such a clusterfuck that once it was over I was glad to walk. I didn't even go to the cast party. It was such a mess.

The difference is that I know the Wachowski's can make good movies. So when they make a bad one, I'm not going to celebrate it for its failed attempts.

Im not familiar with their work outside the matrix movies, of which I only really felt the first one was a good film. What are some of their other projects?
