Yeah, skroll, geege, and I got tickets but Monkeytime missed out just a minute or two later. It's not like it's a big deal though, there's always tickets available even up to the start of MDF, the real competition is over hotel rooms.

Oh and for the Deathspell Omega angle, here's something that sounds a bit like them mixed with Gaza/Converge-style hardcore, but much angrier:

another edit - not quite in the same vein, but you might like Ved Buens Ende, the band that eventually became Virus. Progressive/black metal with great drumming and audible bass, not alien/occult-sounding but definitely strange.

Thank you! I love this poo poo. It's been so long since I've listened to much truly "extreme" metal and genuinely liked it. These bands are incredibly heavy and keep my brain going the whole time. I've got a nice weird backlist to spend time with now :)

Saw BTBAM with Animals as Leaders and The Contortionist in Jacksonville last night. BTBAM put on a great show, finally got to see White Walls live. AAL were great as well as usual. Highlights were Tosin missing a few sweeps and continually laughing at himself not being able to keep up, and Javier's foot pedal not functioning at all at the beginning. Barely noticeable though, and I have a new respect for their drummer, as he's an insanely talented musician. Didn't have much of a feeling on The Contortionist's, though their vocalist looked very much like he was doing his best T-rex impression on stage.

I just came home from Eistnaflug, which is a festival which takes place in Neskaupsstaður, which is a remote fjord in Iceland. How remote? 12 hours by car from the country's only major international airport. This is a very small (~2000 attendants) festival, which somehow had international bands Behemoth, Carcass, Rotting Christ, and Enslaved headlining this year. The venue was set up in a gym located next to the local old folk's home.

Holy hell, seeing Behemoth at such a small venue is incredible. They absolutely blew me away. Their stage presence, theatrics, playing, their everything, was perfect.

A lot of the more experimental post-black stuff coming out of Norway in the late '90s/early '00s really didn't age well, but 1994-1997 or so was a great time for weird metal.

The Australian(and to some extent the NZ) scene has a lot of this dense occult sound at the moment, and a lot of the people involved are in multiple bands. Two of the guys in Portal are also in Impetuous Ritual, and there's also Grave Upheaval which is one guy from Impetuous ritual and one from Temple Nightside. Spire might also be of interest although they have less death metal in their sound than a lot of these bands do.

Eistnaflug is growing rapidly. I don't consider 2k small at all to be honest, certainly not very small.

And you'd be surprised what sort of acts you can get at a non-mainstream fest... http://www.chaosdescends.com/ is the replacement festival for Hell's Pleasure. I don't think HP ever actually sold all 850 tickets, and I doubt Chaos Descends will either. But the lineups are always absolutely insane, and it is always an excellent overview of what's breaking through in the underground over the last year as well as having one or two bands that you'd never expect at an underground metal fest, but somehow end up working.

Cradle is great. With their old stuff with Nick Barker/Adrian Erlandson on drums being their best material. I heard one of their new tracks from their newest record though and it sounded like Dani Filth's voice is completely shot now.
