Internet Kraken posted:What are poachers targeting some horses for? What do they provide that domestic horses do not? My guess is either trophies (they used to be extinct in the wild until fairly recently so they're pretty rare) or extremely poor people looking for meat. Last I checked, they have no folk medicinal value.

Like everyone says horse is worlds better than cow, but it's a "cute" animal so we don't like to eat them here in the US. I've heard firsthand reports that dog tasted pretty good too.

Horse and dog are both very lean meats and generally speaking Westerners are accustomed to fatty meats. No one I know who's had either thought it was especially good, just "fine". But this is the internet and everything is the best ever or the worst ever.

The dog report wasn't online. I worked in a korean dry cleaners and one day was palling around with the boss' college age son who was telling me about a planned trip to Korea and how he'd been before. Eating dog again was one of the things he most looked forward to. I was also told that that these dogs are treated like livestock, not pets.

No specific type of defect is associated with radiation exposure; the whole issue with radiation exposure is that it causes random and generalised DNA damage, which may by chance happen to hit a crucial developmental gene.

Although not proven, it is thought that SHH emitted from the prechordal plate suppresses Pax6 which causes the eye field to divide into two. If the shh gene is mutated, the result is cyclopia, a single eye in the center of the face (Gilbert, 2000).

That reminds me, an animal I find to be both beautiful and creepy are comb jellies. Looks pretty right? They pulsate with the entire color spectrum in bands along their body. Watching them drift through the ocean is very serene...until they find something to eat. Then they're pulsating blobs swallowing other creatures whole.

Can anyone recommend an image along the lines of smile.dog? I'm after something to use in a tabletop RPG for a 'this creature hunts down and murders everyone who sees a photo of it whoops now that includes you' moment, and the original is a bit too well-known to be properly creepy, but I can't find anything else that has the same shock factor as it.
