Any good stuff to know before playing Daggerfall? There are a few things on the wiki but I understand it is a massive game with a questionable interface so I'm looking for more tips. Is it really as buggy as people say? Are there certain skills that should be prioritized/can be ignored?

That covers most of the odd gotchas and quick guides. Most of the buggy strangeness comes from the procedural generation of dungeons, and the inevitable clusterfuck that can cause when you're looking for one objective in the middle of them.

Yes, it is that buggy. Get :siren:all the patches:siren:, save often, and keep staggered saves. The language skills aren't worth it. If you make a custom character, make sure it has at least a little magic skill, Mark/Recall will save your rear end and that branch of Magic has the Soul Trap and Open spells. Try not to piss off town guards too much they are infinite and merciless and they only have one soundbite (halt! halt! halt! halt!). Lots of monsters can only be hurt by silver weapons or better, so hang onto one even if it's a weapon you're lovely with. If you walk up to random NPCs and ask for directions over and over they'll (usually) give up and mark it directly on your map. Also unlike later Bethesda games you don't need to visit a place before you can fast travel there.

Also play "spot the stock sound fx." This would be all of them.

Yeah but he actually left out the part you actually need to know, how to not make it so you can't get one of those items. By the time you get them if you've done the wrong thing its already too late and there's no going back until NG+. That's the whole point.

Oh dear.

- There's a very active EO megathread over here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3705626 Please come ask if you have questions, we're all loving insane.

- Story Mode gives you access to a set party, two special classes (Highlander and Gunner), and a set of side dungeons, as well as Plot. Classic Mode is standard EO - create a party, dive into the labyrinth, get loving murdered by butterflies :vd:

- If you're a veteran of the series, Expert is about the usual difficulty. If you're new, you might want to start on Standard, but I'd probably recommend Expert anyway for the authentic EO experience (see above).

- The customization in this one (besides leveling characters) comes through Grimoire Stones, which are almost wholly RNG dependent. You can get skills that you know or even skills from enemies, and while it can be very helpful to mess around with, it's entirely unnecessary.

- When synthesizing Grimoire Stones, the first one selected determines how many slots the final product will have, the first and second are the pool you can pick from for the final product, and the third will give it that equipment bonus (handy to, for example, give a Medic access to guns or bows so he can contribute from the back row). It's pretty simple but confusing at first and this question gets asked a lot.

- There are periodic points in the Labyrinth that fully heal your party for free (usually around the third floor of each stratum). These are great, use them like mad.

Play without Reign of Giants first, that DLC makes the already hard game even harder
Settle in/near a pigman village for protection from monsters and manure for your farms when you feed them flowers, mushrooms or vegetables. Also they would escort you and work for meaty food and would chop trees/stones for you.
Protect your plantations with lightning rods and don't fight fire hounds there, also leave some space between patches instead of making a giant field, burning down all the things accidentally is a big setback.
Honey is very useful for a lot of healing and food recipes, and doesn't spoil for a very long time, set up a bee farm and flower patch whenever you can.
Crock pot food is essential for survival, you won't get too far on raw or just using fire to cook, it also allows you to make monster meat into good stuff. Look up the recipes on the wiki or calculator, honey nuggets, dragon pies or pierogi are particularly good.
Charcoal is only made by setting trees on fire with a torch and then chopping the burnt tree down, you need coal for a lot of things but this critical fact is somehow not really mentioned by the game.

A couple horrific atrocities you will commit can actually be avoided, kind of. If you ever get to a point where the game tells you to do something, it is ok to just say no and turn off the game. It was designed for that to be an option. You won't finish the story or know what happens, but sometimes that is preferable. If you don't know about the White Phosphorus incident you'll understand why that is an option afterwards.

This is a game where I would encourage dying. Towards the end of the game the loading screens stop having hints and start getting weird.

Really think about what it is you're doing and why, and what your character is doing and why.

Even if you don't love the gameplay (it's a little generic) stick with the game - the ending has a lot of story in it and it's not that long of a game. It's a fantastic experience once you really think about it and get what the devs were doing.

Until you unlock the vocation system there isn't much to talk about. After you get vocations though...

-Don't go for Paladin or Armamentalist on the main character. Mastering ANY other second tier vocation on the MC unlocks the Hero vocation. (Other characters need to master every second tier vocation except those two and thus not really worth going for in a normal playthrough)

-Have someone beeline for Luminary ASAP. Hustle Dance is too great to pass up.

-Keep in mind that almost every special ability that isn't magic has no cost attached to it. Mages kind of get the short end of the stick in this game though you still want to have one around.

-There's no reason to stay in a vocation you've mastered when you could spend those battles learning abilities from other vocations. If you end up in the unlikely situation that a character has mastered everything then leave them as a Hero or a Paladin.

-Lookup a guide for the style contest. You'll need at least one character to equip up to 220 style and one male character up to 200 style in order to get a plot necessary item.

Pretty sure that was an actual option with a cutscene and everything during development, but the people in QA kept picking it and not getting to the end.

The game is fairly unique in that it's hard to play, not because of mechanics or difficulty, but because of what you do in it. It sorta seems odd that it makes the game good.

Also yeah, there's a lot of loading screens with interesting text and stuff that I ended up missing due to not dying and also having the game installed on an SSD.

Debora is the best wife and only a boring person would pick someone else.

...Other than that I don't have anything major, it's a fairly straightforward game and there is no class changing. Different monsters have different max levels and peak at different times, a Gigantes is never going to get past level 7 for example so keep an eye on those if you use monsters a lot. Also if a monster has less than 20 Wisdom you can't control them in battle, although they can get more as they level up.

One monster you probably want to keep with you regardless is a member of the healer slime family since having an extra healer is never bad. In addition Cureslime, Healslime and King Cureslime are three of the four monsters in the game (Epiphany is the fourth) that can cast Omniheal which IIRC no human party member can. It's a spell that heals the entire group to full which is really quite handy, although Cureslime and Healslime don't have it by default and will only gain it at high levels while Epiphany and King Cureslime start with it.

Also you might know this from a different DQ but Metal Slimes are rare enemies that give tons of exp but are a serious pain to kill before they run away. Your best bet is to go with weapons with high crit chances like Hela Hammer or Poison Needle or anything that hits multiple times as your hits will always deal 1 damage except for crits which will take them out in one hit.

Just so you know, the only "ethical" run in this game is to not play it at all.

You should also pick up collectibles when you get the chance and read/listen to the text that comes with them. They are really good and flesh out the world. One, which the game throws at you, humanizes the interrogator. I'm not saying you need to pick them all up first play through or comb through areas after you clear them. Do make it a point to at least look for some.

Don't regret your decisions by reloading saves. Just keep going. Whatever happens. Also, status effects make fights much easier. Don't choose "Pain"-difficulty when asked because it's ridiculous for a first playthrough - you will be locked out of a dungeon and an extra ending scene but it's not really worth it IMO. Save often (the crows are save points) since it is ridiculously easy to accidentally kill yourself. Don't be afraid to explore. Be aware that the game goes to some really dark places.

EDIT: Also, there is a prequel-of-sorts called Lisa "the First" which came before Lisa and explains the deal about the titular character. It's definitely not necessary to look it up before playing but it might be interesting after you've finished the game.

EDIT2: You can get an extra ending sequence by not using the item "Joy" once. It can be a bit of a pain since several characters need it to do any decent damage in fights. If you use it the characters get huge damage boosts for a while, but will do paltry damage for a long while after it runs out. I used them during boss fights.

Only thing I can remember is that you can't unlock all the fast travel towers from the start until you have the necessary upgrades for them. Unfortunately, the game doesn't really tell you which you can and can't unlock at any given point, so don't break your head over how to get in a tower if the solution isn't somewhat obvious.

Either I completely missed fast travel in the game or you're thinking of Arkham Origins.

I can think of a few more tips but most of them are spoilers or partly spoilers. At any rate the game has a back-up save system so you can revert if you get stuck or something, so it's pretty much a non-issue.

Oh, the Batmobile stuff is fairly front-loaded in the game, so that'll die down a bit after a while, prioritizing upgrades for it is probably a good idea.

This looks like an Origins tip, unless I totally missed something, there's no fast travel in Knight.

There is a gadget in the evidence room at GCPD that the game won't directly tell you to get until late game but you can get it whenever. There's another gadget next to the holding cells in the movie studios, the game won't ever tell you to go get it, but it's pretty good to have around. I found the most useful upgrades to be increasing the max number of fear takedowns, the Batmobile thrusters and cannon, the one that let's you blind drones for longer and disruptor capabilities.

Um, I'm not quite sure what you need, but from the very start -

First, get to the Skadowsk. Memory is hazy but there's some some stalkers not far from your starting position, I think you can ask for directions. Or just murder them, whatever.

When there, get missions from various people, such as the bandit leader. You can betray him in favour of the loners if you want though. Talk to everyone, hold artifacts back for when artifact guy offers you a good price for them.

If you see strange hazes and or anomaly detector beeps, chuck bolts around to find the anomaly. They occur most in anomaly fields, where you can find artefacts to sell.

General progression is do missions, look for hidden stashes, upgrade your weaponry and armour, look for helicopters and progress through the maps to Pripyat.

Shotguns are useful for mutants, rifles for blokes. Carry bandages/ first aid kits/ food / medicine, but you don't need to carry to much of each.
