Someone who did it and reported back to this thread was told that they don't like being touched. But I've seen them being pet in plenty of pics from close encounters. So I'm not sure. Part of why they do the encounters is so the animals are acclimated to different humans for stuff like vet visits, though, so touching is probably ok???

I know that with big cats the major problems are separating the cub from its parents (which isn't an issue here, considering it's adult animals, I hope), and not giving the baby antibodies or possibly passing human diseases it can't protect itself from. Neither of those seem to apply to this situation, and adult red pandas aren't, say, tigers (which would have to be seriously restrained or be seriously dangerous) so the obvious ones are covered.

Yeah the encounters are with adult pandas. You have to book in advance and they only do small groups, for a short period.

The Wellington Zoo doesn't just do pandas though, they also arrange encounters with cheetahs, lions, giraffes, meerkats, and lemurs. You get to actually pet the cheetah but it looks like you have to interact with the lion through a cage.

When do the babies grow the red/black coat? Are they born with rings/stripes on their tails already?

The color grows in gradually over about 9 months. They already have stripes early on though.

I still think it'd be reasonably possible to keep an un-domesticated red panda as a pet, as long as you were willing to cage in your back yard and give them plenty of stuff to keep entertained.

I hope that's safe for the panda. I know cat cub petting isn't okay, but I haven't read up on panda petting.

:ohdear:

A lot of the 'cat cub petting not being okay' thing is that a lot of the scummier places will take a cub from its mother to be the petting animal and just.. dispose of it, when it grows out of the 'cute and fuzzy' stage. Actual respectable zoos may or may not offer the 'pet an animal' thing based on the animal's socialization, health concerns and internal policies.

Also yeah, that. They can even taste artificial sweetener which apparently only primates can taste otherwise.
