I'm ready to start another LP and with a little help I think this one will prove as entertaining as RE6.

Spoiler: it is

Thanks rumrusher!

His service record is long, filled with all kinds of hard operations, specializing in complete penetration and exploitation of enemy security holes. This mission though is of the utmost importance, and were the enemy to perform well and erect their defenses ahead of time I fear we may have to order the agent to pull out prematurely before things become a total mess. By nature this is a slow and gentle operation, so roughness is not permissible, lest the enemy feel the agent within them and react by tightening security.

What is Syphon Filter?
Syphon Filter is a game that I started at the second in the series, then I played the third. I once had a PSX demo disk that contained what is considered one of the coolest sequences in the series on it and I was hooked immediately. Sometime later, I got the full game, and it, I think, is what fostered and encouraged my instinctive urge to screw around in games today.

The Syphon Filter series is considered a stealth-action hybrid and one of the first “super-spy” games. You will run 'n gun, take cover and sneak through terrorist bases and friendly airfields as you seek to uncover the truth behind the “Syphon Filter” virus conspiracy. It is a very durable design and while clunky at times, it features full voice acting, excellent music (I can't ever start the game without hearing the main menu theme play out), and open ended levels filled with dudes to shoot, not to mention secret goals for many of the levels (starting from the second game) adding to the replayability.

The voice acting is also amazing for the time, and it improves with each game in the trilogy. To sum up the trilogy (before the PSP/PS2 games), you basically have a mix between Die Hard and James Bond. Imagine every mainstream 90s action flick rolled into one, and you have the setting and themes for this game to a T. Gabriel Logan is a badass agent, stoic with heart. Joined by fellow “Agency” member Lian Xing, he will travel the globe to combat the terrorist Erich Rhoemer who threatens the world with this dangerous virus.

These games are fun as hell, full of love, and I will very much enjoy bringing them to an audience. I can't think of a better duo to have along for the ride than Coolguye and TheLastRoboKy. They're doing an LP of Dishonored here!

GUEST STARRING: The JAIDS JADE STAR! (Starting from SF3)

My goals
I'm going to get all of the bonuses in each level (starting from Syphon Filter 2). They don't do anything except open up new maps for a two-player mode where you and a friend try to kill each other in a very confined split-screen (this is different in the 3rd game) but some of them are fun to shoot for. I will be making use of save-states to accomplish a few because holy poo poo some of them get brutal and to fail some means a complete level restart, but I feel they deserve to be shown so that the love and care put into these games by the devs can be better appreciated.

I will also be playing on Hard Mode, because I have never done so before and I know well enough how normal goes (it's impossible to die in combat for one!) so I'm hoping this will lead to humorous experiences. In this game it is not hard to die, and, while rare, you can fail or die for no real reason or the game just wants you to, but that's fine and often funny. Hope it happens.

:siren: Don't spoil the story!

Alright, let's do it!

Update 01 - Washington D.C. Under Attack!

-Syphon Filter 1 INTRODUCTION|(2:39)

Syphon Filter Episode 1-1 - DC Metropolitan Area|(37:05)
We hit the ground running shortly after Rhoemer begins his attack on Washington D.C. Gabe takes to the streets to prevent a viral outbreak, with the ultimate goal of eliminating Rhoemer and his lieutenants: Pavel Kravitch, Mara Aramov, and Anton Girdeux. But, things are never that easy, especially when The Place starts losing business - it's going to be a long night...

Syphon Filter Episode 1-2 - DC Park Area|(22:29)
After wounding Aramov and stopping the viral bomb in the subway, Logan heads to the park to confront Girdeux and Rhoemer before the main bomb detonates. On the way he reconciles with the CBDC agents and demonstrates tactical superiority against enemies less than interested in stopping him.

When we get there, I'll see how viable the second trilogy is. I only played Omega Strain in passing and there's a metric ton of crap to go over with that game, and since it was all built around network play (on the PS2 no less) it's going to require some liberal cheating to show everything off where possible.

The other two, Dark Mirror & Logan's Shadow I'm curious of as a series fan, but I never got around to playing them since they were only on PSP when I still cared. As they're on PS2 now, I'll look into it when we get there.

I've played both the PSP ones and they're frequently described as THE reason to get a PSP. They're really good. I don't know how the PS2 ports came out but I imagine that as long as they kept it close to what they had, they'd be decent enough.

Admittedly because I insisted on using nothing but the taser, setting all enemies on fire, but still.

Was always curious about these games since it has the best taser in video game history, but never had the chance to play them so thanks for showing them off. Syphon Filter looks like it's aged remarkably well outside of the graphics and draw distance, I'd have expected the combat to be much clunkier than it is.

I played the first 2 games quite a bit, and they're really great games, especially this first one. Graphically, it looks a bit rough these days, but there's a lot of varied levels and objectives and they really are fun games. I love that DC Park level just because of the varied objectives--you're disarming bombs, saving hostages, and setting up communications relays all while a timer is ticking down. The Girdeux fight is pretty easy once you know what you're doing, but very imposing when you don't: you've got a guy in impenetrable armor slowly pursuing you around a smallish arena shooting flames at you. MGS3 did a very similar thing with The Fury fight, but I actually prefer this one, probably because you can actually see what you're doing.

And lastly, the taser: truly the best weapon. Lighting someone on fire from halfway across the map will never not be funny.

our every move is the new tradition
This was one of the series I followed back in the PSOne days, and I still find it befuddling that it was allowed to fester on the PSP instead of moving forward with the various PlayStations. In a lot of ways, they're ahead of their time; looking at them in 2015, they're graphically rough as hell, and Gabe's immensely flammable outfit used to drive me up the wall, but the action's smooth as hell and the cast of characters is way ahead of its time.

I just looked up what the developers have been doing lately and I guess they're the ones behind the Uncharted game on the Vita.

Syphon Filter was a series I always intended to play through but never did, my only experience with the series was when Syphon Filter 2 mysteriously appeared in our PSX library, to this day I have no idea where it came from, and I played that through two or three times. This is some weird rear end alternate reality version of DC, its all hedge mazes and parks and The Places but by far the most jarring thing is how the metro is actually on time. It's never on time and that's without terrorists running around!

Also that beheaded statue was at least definitely based on Lincoln's statue, and DC does have a statue of Freedom .

I don't remember if its mentioned or used in the first game or any of the PS1 trilogy but I do know that in one of the PS2 games the taser is shown to be non-lethal as long as you let go before the fire starts. In the later games one of the "Agency" higher-ups is some kind of "don't kill any one, not even the bad guys" dude and there's a level where one of the parameters is to not kill anyone at all. Using the taser is fine as long as you don't ignite anyone.

In any case the PS1 Syphon Filters are great. Everyone should watch this and then go play them.

I'm so happy someone is LPing this. I loved the first two games, but I got stuck on the third one at an escort I couldn't beat.

Regarding the lovely hidden C4 in the demolished subway, not only is it in the dark, but they disabled the UI prompt to open it when you're next to it unless you use a flashlight. I lost 20 minutes when I replayed the game recently on that same section.

Also, in the park, I think the tearing is an emulation issue. I don't recall encountering it on the PS1 version.

Hello yes I heard there was a lovely trainwreck here and...

I love this series. The taser deserves all the love it's getting since it is THE stealth weapon and for a while it will be THE action weapon as long as you zap and switch fast enough from each unarmored enemy but in several levels there will be two guns that do action better in tight circumstances for different reasons - trying to do without them at that point will force you to run for cover more often and probably die more often to boot since there are certain limitations to the speed of the taser on Hard which will become more troublesome as the enemies get smarter about prepping for combat. Plus, of course, there's the bosses, which are all about forcing you out of the taser zone, and the later games which throw more than three enemies at you at once so you kinda can't skate by with the taser as much.

I'm fairly sure the no-kill no-alarm sections are actually tough. Part of that is from just plain having to switch out your usual playbook of sniping dudes with the taser when the only restriction is being seen and heard, but it's also got none of the nice mechanics that exist nowadays that can take some pain out of sudden stealth sections like sticking to walls/behind low cover or any way to really keep track of where the enemies you can't see are facing or walking.

Lunethex
Feb 4, 2013

Me llamo Sarah Brandolino, the eighth Castilian of this magnificent marriage.
The stealth is rudimentary and almost non-existent in the first game, it basically boils down to tailing a dude for a few minutes then you get back to the shooting. I wouldn't really consider this a spoiler since it kind of just happens then you move on, which is another plus for the game: nothing ever overstays its welcome. Girdeux and his flamethrower? We'll never fight a guy like him again, so it creates a unique experience.

But in the second game, stealth is very involved and they put a lot of effort into it that it becomes its own kind of stealth game, because the levels are better (and to some extent, purely) designed around their gameplay and they never come off as dry or unfair.

And I can't wait to see what Hard Mode does to some of those levels. I know of ONE change it does to one of the stealth sequences in Syphon Filter 2 and I'm STILL trying to figure out how the hell I'm going to get past it :v:
