Unless something has changed radically over the past couple years, Human Resources Command doesn't talent-manage initial entry training linguists in any fashion whatsoever. The naturally gifted 3/3 honor grad and the idiot who miraculously got a 2/2 are both subject to the needs of the Army when it comes to assignments. Your classmate either got the luck of the draw or volunteered for airborne training (which typically results in orders to one of the SF groups)

With the Army starting to tighten up regulations for sub-proficient linguists, it's equally funny/depressing to see people come fresh out of DLI to a tactical unit, never get any language training, fail their first DLPT and be forced to reclass or get out in less than 2 years.

There are a few JSOC units that poach graduates who have a mix of 3/3 and good PT scores, you hear about it happening every now and then. Usually when they don't get anyone fit enough from their briefs at the gaining commands because once we all get to our missions we let ourselves go.

It was the latter. And that was after they pulled him out of class for a couple weeks after he got a DUI. Frankly I'm amazed he even passed, let alone the DLPT scores.

Also, anyone here a pashto linguist? I'd like to keep my 3/3 but after my experience at Goodfellow I learned the vast difference between real pashto and DLI pashto. What did you guys do to improve your real (grammatically incorrect ) Pashto?

I used to be a Pashto linguist. I kept up my "real" Pashto skillz by being in Afghanistan. This lowered my DLPT score from 3/3 to 2/2+, but I dgaf cause I made E-6 in the USMC in under 8 years and was about to get out anyway, plus I'd always had native Russian and Ukrainian skills at 3/3 or higher the whole time I was in, so FLPP was maxed no matter what.
From what I understand, Meade will provide plenty for you to maintain "real" language skills. Watch BBC Pashto for DLPT practice lol

Yeah I went to DLI pre2011 for my Pashto skillz, but RC West or whatever they renamed it mostly speaks a weird mixture of Farsi/Pashto so I had a hell of a learning curve. But considering I mostly taught myself Egyptian Arabic in secondary school I caught in fairly quick :smuggo:

Also, your job's going to be very unit and shop dependent. You could be doing 9-5 just tapping away at a computer, or swings doing overwatch, or panamas doing god knows what.

I didn't see any at all when I was there, 2013-2014. I did see some at Lackland while I was in basic, which would make sense since that's where DLIELC is. I see them every once in a while at Ft Gordon too.

Also why are they wasting resources on someone in the reserves? We expect our reservists to yknow, have a skill that they use in their everyday life. And Korean at that, wtf you guys love blowing money on idiots.

I just don't get it, we have reserves but they've usually done at least a year of 'active' duty and have a skill that they use on a daily basis than can be used on peacekeeping operations. German language is so off our radar for operationally useful languages same with Korean, that we can just get a civilian to fill that slot if need be. Slavic languages/Arabic languages/Pashto/Farsi/Dari are the only ones we will shell out money for people to learn and we have a hard time with that.

Garmish has a very good language school, they teach all of those there. The reason the military hates money in that case is that they flew someone to Germany from Florida instead of driving up the road to Georgia or taking a shorter flight to Texas or Maryland.

Well see, the reason we train people in all these languages is because America has a boner.

It has a raging boner of a 16 year old boy who just got slipped viagra by his buddy.

Now imagine the middle east is a pussy. We really like to gently caress that sandy snatch for some reason, but it doesn't always satisfy us. Sometimes this raging boner thirsts for dry humping or just, well, being a dick. A dick that likes being stuck in pudding. Other countries' pudding.

Our linguists trained in all kinds of bullshit lets us at least project the imagine we might be listening to them or would be ready to gently caress them right up the rear end without lube at any moment.

somewhatpathetic
Oct 21, 2012
And because of that, there's the whole strategic work side of the house. Military linguists are pretty cheap compared to the civilian equivalent (quality's also worse, but hey!), so any intell agency related to the DoD in a peripheral way is going to have a few sperges with bad haircuts floating about.

So that's why you get the massive amount of Korean/Chinese linguists floating about, they're cheap transcribers/collection operators who become even cheaper compared to their civil counterparts if they're on swings or mids. No one in their right mind's going to do a job that they could do in the middle of the day for the same amount of cash up front.

It's roughly the same as your first run through. I've taken intermediate and advanced courses and the only difference as you might expect is the difficulty of the material. Hours, homework quantity and general breakdown (i.e. reading hour, speaking hour) are all dependent on the schoolhouse but roughly what you're used to.

That right there doesn't necessarily give a lot of information. I could pencilwhip some poo poo up in like half an hour or 45 minutes after formation in the morning and get away with it, but then I was talking to some Russian kids that literally lived homework, doing it in class breaks, lunch, after class and staying up late still working on it and could still barely get it all done.
