Traded it in for a Nokia without a lovely antenna.

Hey! My mother and father still uses Tracphone, and they certianly don't earn enough to be drug dealers. Mostly they keep them around in case of emergency (car breaks down, need to get in contact now, whatever). They've been buying those $20/60min cards for years so they have some insane number of minutes because those minutes expire after some amount of time unless you get another card.

Wi-fi is free and it's really not that bad on your minutes if you use the internet without wi-fi. Texts still cost about the same, a bit more if it has an attachment.

I'm hoping wireless charging steps up. I forget the details, but some company at one of this year's trade shows demoed a setup that used Wi-Fi access points to triangulate devices' locations within a hotel suite and charge them wirelessly without having to set them on a charging mat. If something like that takes off and I basically don't have to worry about battery levels at home or at work, current capacities would be just fine with me.

Whenever someone posts the 'Nokias are indestructible' meme I feel like I'm missing out on something. I've had a bunch of different Nokia models over the years and without exception the hardware was garbage - either the keys would stop working (removable faceplate models) or the slide/flip mechanism would wear out.

I had to bust out my old Nokia 3100 in 2008 and it was still going strong. The last time I took a look at it it still powered on and held a charge, unlike my much newer slim (non razr) Motorola and Samsung slider. It didn't flip or slide, and as far as I knew it didn't have a removable faceplate. You just had to get the right kind of candybar phone. E: apparently it did have something called "xpress-on" cover plates, n/m titties has a new favorite as of 11:49 on Aug 8, 2015 |

Some of the more durable Nokia's were the 5210 and 5100's models enclosed in water and dust resistant rubber which also protected it against impact shocks. Even then the regular phones were pretty impact resistant as the removable face plates and battery took most of the force and if that did shatter then you'd just buy another. Looking through an iFixit guide the phones were made really sturdy; compartments within compartments of plastic with the only bit of glass being the LCD display. To get that to shatter you'd have to drive an awl through it.

Old-phone-chat makes me want to see if my Nokia 8110 still works. I got it because of the Matrix. I even drew up the plans to retro-fit the spring slider. Never got around to doing it, which is good because I'd have trashed the thing.

The 6102 I replaced it with was an absolute monster and even with chunks of the plastic breaking off it still worked like a charm and I loved it. I only replaced that because I could get a slimmer profile Nokia for free with the family's upgrade plan.

My S3 Mini, with no case, is at the very upper limit of what I can carry in a pocket. Something larger could physically fit, but it's still bulky and hits against my leg every time I take a step. I have no idea how people deal with iPhones or those giant 5" motherfuckers, especially with a case added to make it even more huge. My Game Boy Color never bothered me back when I carried it around, so maybe I just went too long without carrying tons of poo poo and lost the ability to do so. As for back pockets, I've never understood how people can carry anything in them and still be able to sit down.

Just found my old 5110!. Sadly it looks like the innards are well gone as it doesn't even charge so  Even if I could get it up and running my phone provider just killed off the 2G network. I still would go slightly nuts on a phone with no predictive text, reverting to txt lk ths. Surprisingly the old phone is smaller than I remembered. So for science I did a skinny jeans test The phone's height (excluding aerial) is exactly the same as my Galaxy S4 and the bulk of it is roughly the same as my wallet - so fits kinda comfortably, even when sitting down.  But yeah not exactly subtle.

The camera was terrible though, made even worse by the fact Sony tried playing up the optics - even setting up a website to share people's blurry t610 photos. And then there was this scene in Charlie's Angels:  Where they used probably the worst camera on a flagship feature phone as a telephoto zoom. Not that any phone cameras were good back then. I just remember the Sony one being particularly bad.

I pay $36 for 4g / 5GB /unlimited voice+SMS , though this is admittedly in Norway, and worked out to more USD before the oil prices cratered (taking the NOK down with them). The colour screen ones and the sliders were fragile though and the earlier external antenna ones had that weak point. But monochrome circa 1997-2000 small phones are as strong as hell.  E: obsolete tech: A government website wasn't working, so just tonight I bloody faxed them a form. It's me, I use obsolete tech. Just last week I was wondering whether I should install a real magic DVD decoder card into an old PC, just so I could use the remote controller... Fo3 has a new favorite as of 14:32 on Aug 7, 2015 |

Oh god, this reminds me of a "obsolete technology" that is thankfully dead/dying--giving carriers the ability to lock out core features on a whim on their "carrier-branded" phones. You still see it sometimes with Internet Tethering but the must frustrating thing about owning a dumbphone in the mid 2000s was having features like bluetooth hobbled because your carrier decided they didn't want you to have it. Or the time my Razr had the ability to set custom, non-purchased ringtones locked down.  Luckily I think once Apple came on the market and told carriers to shove it w/r/t branding it stopped a bit. You still see carrier branding and features getting locked out but it's nowhere near as egregious as back in the day.
