As someone who doesn't really read Fantastic Four, who is Valeria and what special powers does she have?

Madkal posted:As someone who doesn't really read Fantastic Four, who is Valeria and what special powers does she have? Valeria left him in the dust when she was 2. Also, Dr. Doom is Valeria's godfather (he insisted on that and being allowed to name her as his price for helping with the delivery, which was difficult). She calls him "Uncle Doom" and sometimes goes off to Latveria to hang out with him.

Also she's named Valeria because Reed was in the Negative Zone or something when she was born and there were complications and the only person smart enough to perform the delivery was.....DOOM. Naming her Valeria was the price of his help and they have kind of an uncle/niece relationship to the point that she was living with him right up to SW.

He also once used her as a channel for eldritch energies he used to send her big brother Franklin to Hell.

Didn't Dr. Octopus almost help with the delivery that time Sue miscarried due to radiation or whatever? Ha, uncle Otto.

You know, I'm pretty sure that the Valeria in the comics at the moment is actually the other-dimensional offspring of Sue and Doom, who joined the Fantastic Four in the Heroes Return era because Claremont wasn't allowed to include Kitty Pryde as Franklin's live-in nanny, and was later regressed to a foetus in Sue's womb after Reed used the Ultimate Nullifier to defeat Abraxas (there was something about Franklin using his powers to "set things right" as well, but I don't remember the exact details) before being re-birthed with Doom's help during the very brief Adam Warren / Karl Kesel run before Waid and Wieringo came aboard.

The Question IRL posted:Superia was supposed to be a Marvel female super villain genuis on par with the Leader et all. (Though her plans were a little iffy. Improve women's role in the Marvel Universe by forcefully sterilising everyone except a small group of female villains. Turning Paladin and Captain America into Women so they'd be loyal to her.) I did like the recent revamp of Nightshade which had her identity disguised by referring to her as DNS, which was unusually up-to-date. It is kinda sad, considering I can at least think of one DC lady that fits the bill in Dr Light. And probably Poison Ivy too.

Wasn't Poison Ivy just a botanist? Did they retcon her into being the smartest super-botanist in the world or something?

I assume that not only is she the world's leading botanist, she's also probably able to perform neurosurgery and rebuild the Batmobile if needed.

Smart enough to get a PhD definitely, but that doesn't count for a lot in comic books. Depending on the canon she wasn't a particularly gifted botanist, and most of the incredible plant hybrids she's able to grow and care for aren't a result of her brilliant mind but her weird non-specific plant control powers. Barbara Gordon/Oracle is probably up there if just because of her photographic memory meaning she retains everything she reads, although New 52 Barbara seems awfully young to have been exposed to that level of knowledge, photographic memory or not.

Going over smart characters in comics is always a little difficult because evil geniuses are so prolific, and there are myriad characters that are held up as massive players only to fade into the background. Apocalypse circa 1990 is arguably on Doom's level, for example, but time has downplayed his intelligence to the point where he's become more of a generic despot. The Intelligencia of World War Hulks is shown as collectively smart enough to outsmart most of the "top 6", but it'll probably be awhile before characters like the Mad Thinker or the Red Ghost get presented as major threats again. In addition, intelligence lists tend to only acknowledge scientific / inventive knowledge. Dr. Strange is the #1 brain on Earth when it comes to magic, but doesn't really get as much credit for being "smart". Cyclops and Cable are tactical geniuses. Loki is a genius at sorcery and manipulation. And so on. Not to discount the established notions of the Marvel Universe, but there's more than one way to look at it.

I feel like there's something amusing about the fact that all your examples are still dudes. Like, I'm not knocking this reply at all, you make a great point! "Most intelligent" in superhero comics terms is a really weird and focused on certain kinds of intelligence over others. There are definitely multiple ways to be smart. But these are all still dudes. (Except Loki, arguably, but Loki is Loki, so ... Yeah.) Even when you get into other fields like that you don't really get ladies as the Best In Show of a field. Is Shulkie a better lawyer than Matt Murdock? I genuinely do not know.

I played the Spider-Man arcade game at a brewery last night. It was a lot of fun, though weird. (The final level is Latveria - fight Doom. OK Cool. After you fight doom (who I think was just a doombot?) you fight a lot of Venoms. OK, venom final boss of 90s spider-man game, makes sense, but why in Latveria?). The weirdest is the characters. So players have choice of 4 characters: Spider-man (makes sense), Black Cat (ditto), Hawkeye (I would've though Daredevil, but I guess he fits in with them) and Namor (what???) Namor can fire electric blasts. Is this a comic power he has too? Also, I heard that Namor can't appear in video games anymore (and that's why he wasn't in Avengers Alliance). Is that true? Who has the rights to him?

They probably wanted to avoid Daredevil's devil imagery, and thought an archer would be a good fit. Namor I would assume is because someone was a fan of his 60's cartoon. Also, he's a manly tough guy. It's a weird mix for people who know the comics, but from a video game standpoint it seems to have a nice range of looks.
