Yes, the lack of proper science education which makes people fear a process which is in no way more complicated than cross-breeding and "natural" procreation, and is in fact much better controlled, is a problem for policy-making, I agree entirely.

For example, these are the steps of the process of mitosis in regular eukaryotes, which happens "naturally" in your body all the time:
  1. Interphase
  2. Prophase
  3. Prometaphase
  4. Metaphase
  5. Anaphase
  6. Telophase
  7. Cytokinesis

Spooky, isn't it? Well, meiosis, which happens during sexual reproduction (and hence breeding and such), is even worse!

  • Meiosis I
    • Prophase I
      1. Leptotene
      2. Zygotene
      3. Pachytene
      4. Diplotene
      5. Diakinesis
      6. Synchronous processes
    • Metaphase I
    • Anaphase I
    • Telophase I
  • Meiosis II
    • Prophase II
    • Metaphase II
    • Anaphase II
    • Telophase II

And that just creates the gametes, which then go through fertilization! All those scary words and processes happening in your body all the time, and what does it do to the children?! :spooky:

Putting warning labels on food that doesn't need warning labels is misleading and encourages bad decision-making both on part of the consumer and on part of the producers. People being scared into requiring food producers to needlessly restrict their ability to improve crop yields and quality will lead to scarcer, pricier food. It's a bad thing which any environmentalist and socialist should oppose.

Uh, yeah, changing an organisms genome to contain a change that might have happened in 10,000 generations (or possibly never at all) overnight is slightly more complicated than cross-breeding. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be a relatively recent development. Not Anti-GMO, but let's be honest. Like any technology, it has capacity to go awry. There's probably reason for a rational amount of concern when radically modifying food supplies. Even in the Bill Nye video I posted earlier it was largely pro-GMO but at the end he throws in a "we should probably be a little more careful than we're being right now." That being said, GMO labeling would be dumb because nearly everything would say GMO on it. It would be totally worthless.

But that's not true; we actually tend to do a lovely job at reproducing processes that occur naturally all the time. As an example, photosynthesis has been a naturally-occurring process for plants and plant-like organisms around the world for millions of years, yet artificial photosynthesis is still a hot topic of research because we're actually kind of lovely at artificially producing this totally natural and "simple" process.

Another example: growing a human liver is a pretty humdrum and boring process until you're asked to do it in an artificial way.

Arguably, changing a single gene in a species is a far simpler process than attempting to invoke that change over 10,000 breeding attempts. The variable space alone is far larger in the latter than the former; any number of other things could happen along the way. Selectively modifying a gene is a much more controlled and accurate process, even if it's difficult.
