Or the time my Razr had the ability to set custom, non-purchased ringtones locked down. Isn't that still the problem with Android? I had a Note 2 that went from 4.1 to 4.3 and that was it. No more updates. I don't know if the carrier ever put out a 4.4 or not. I just checked and the 2nd search result was from last year asking if we were ever going to see KitKat. So probably not. I guess the problem is lessened somewhat in that important apps in Android get updated outside of a major release whereas Apple generally waits to update features in their core apps with the overall operating system. Still sucks though.

Most of the "burner phone" companies in North, South, and Central America (TracFone, Net10 Wireless, etc.) are all owned by one company (America Movil) and it's a loving juggernaut. Its CEO is the second richest person in the world, and was number one for a while a few years ago. They're not a huge deal in the U.S. but south of the border they own a staggering amount of the telecom marketshare. People shittalk the phones and the fact that it's pay-as-you-go but goddrat if it isn't great to be able to walk into Walmart or CVS or whatever and come out five minutes later with a working smartphone that has no contract and unlimited nationwide calling and texting, all for pennies on the dollar when compared to what some people are paying for the latest and greatest iPhone on someone else's overpriced monthly plan

No data charges on any of the included services. Last time I checked, I got 35/35 Mbit speeds on my S4 Mini, and it's been absolutely rock solid Now, if only I could get a battery that would actually last a full day of normal use... In most cases it's the manufacturer holding the update back; Samsung needs to TouchWiz everything because they really want to be their own ecosystem, and HTC/LG/Motorola each to some degree want to customise their builds for their devices, maybe to use some exclusive functionality or whatever. Ceasing to update devices past one or two iterations is a decision largely based on the two-year cellphone upgrade life cycle, and partially on the sometimes huge fundamental differences between apparently incremental Android version updates.

I'm the super where I live, and I have a lovely, previously-mentioned Pantech flip phone. I plugged it in on my way to bed only to get a CHECK BATTERY warning. I took the battery out and put it back in a bunch of times. I tried different cords and ports. Got nothing. Since I'm on call nights and weekends, the phone not charging means that I wouldn't be able to leave the house. I spent hours digging around and managed to find the Nokia 3100 I mentioned, as well as the charger. I got it in 2004, and replaced it in 2006. I had to use it briefly in 2008, which was the last time it was charged or turned on. It still works and is taking a charge. I tested it by sending and receiving calls to my (obsolete) house phone and playing a game of nokia bowling. As soon as I was done with that, the flip phone started charging again.

That doesn't completely excuse the horrible price structures of US cellular plans but even in a perfect world with benevolent cellular carriers our service plans would never be as cheap as yours (which usually don't even include roaming outside your home country, nobody in the US would even consider a cellular plan that didn't work outside their home state).

Slanderer posted:One of the more interesting things to result from Dreamcast's poor security was Bleemcast. This software was an emulator bootdisc for commercial PS1 games that was ported over from the PC version. The bleemcast disc would exploit the security hole when booted, and would then launch an emulator from RAM, which would allow you to swap in a PS1 disc. It was originally going to be a universal PS1 emulator, but because of compatibility issues they only ended up selling 3 different bootdiscs for Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, and Metal Gear Solid. Even with the emulation layer, the DC was able to run these games much better than an actual PS1, so they were rendered at a higher resolution with additional post processing. The DC controller didn't map 1:1 with the PS1 controller, which was an issue, but otherwise these discs apparently worked somehow. The PC version of Bleem was a full emulator, but many (or most?) games were unplayably buggy without dedicated compatibility fixes. This is a few pages ago, but I loving loved Bleemcast. At the time I had a PS1 at one parents house and a DC at the other, so Bleemcast allowed me to play GT2 no matter where I was. I also had the RCA/VGA adapter so I could play DC on the computer monitor in my bedroom since I didn't have a tv in there. Good times. At least it was good times until I realized how bullshit NFL Blitz was, I'd be up by 35 points in the fourth quarter and it all the sudden became impossible to tackle anybody or complete a pass, causing me to lose game after game. Ended up putting a pretty good chip in the monitor screen when I finally lost my poo poo and threw the controller at the screen. Luckily, I'm an adult now and instead of throwing things I just yell at them so no possible harm can occur. Oh also, I had the a Sega CD and it was goddamn useless. As a Genesis it worked fine, but only some CD game would actually work. I traded out 3 or 4 copies of Mortal Kombat at KB Toys because it couldn't load on Sega CD. Eventually I remembered that I had Mortal Kombat 2 on Genesis and that it was far superior game in every possible way. Inspector 34 has a new favorite as of 00:31 on Aug 9, 2015 |

I live so close to the border that half the time I am on a German network and it makes no difference to my rates for anything. Roaming costs within the EU are pretty much non-existent. Having to bother with roaming costs used to be an issue a few years back, it certainly isn't now. Also why is it that when I call my friend in Tucson, that she freaks out over having to pay to receive the call? That right there is an alien concept, having to pay to receive an international call when in your home country. I don't have to pay to receive a call when I am in Germany, Belgium, or any EU country. Nor do I have to pay to receive an international calls when I am in The Netherlands. Edit: I pay €4 a month for 275mb/minutes/sms. Tacking on 1gb extra is €3 a month, but between FON and other public WiFi I have no reason to do that. Deedle has a new favorite as of 15:19 on Aug 9, 2015 |

In the US, you use minutes from your allocation for all calls, incoming or outgoing (They did the same for SMS too). As far as I know, there's only an extra charge for placed international calls (Not sure if those also burn allocated minutes). I guess a collect call would also be a charge. Most plans don't count calls within a provider (Verizon to Verizon calls), or calls on nights and weekends. However, keeping track of minutes is becoming an obsolete technology as many plans have unlimited minutes included, or such a large amount that it's effectively unlimited. I'm waiting for data plans to have gimmicks like unlimited nights and weekends, and some sort of 'in network' unlimited.
