Girl Model follows a former-model turned talent scout as she discovers a 13 year old girl from Siberia and sends her to Japan. This doc has a few surprise weapons that make it more than its misleading Netflix poster (this is not an anti-modeling screed, per se). It shows the poverty and hopes that these Russian families pin on their daughters sent abroad. It is right next to these almost prepubescent girls as they struggle in a new culture and shoulder the weight of money and trouble far too heavy for them to bear. The real surprise is the talent scout -- a hauntingly introspective and depressive personality with dreams of children who struggles to connect with her protégés. The movie has a quiet, desperate tone, and is fleet yet also unrushed. It leaves a lot of "details" unspoken but the mood says it all. The more I think about it the more I liked it. A couple moments where the director interacts with the characters provides occasional welcome relief but is not overbearing. Only 75 minutes.

BBC 4 are broadcasting a documentary tomorrow night about the impact that the atomic age had on the world, which is composed entirely of stock footage. It's been put together by the guy who made The Story of Film: An Odyssey. The trailer makes it look incredibly interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftGGevf_fZk

It gives the whole thing a very melancholic tone, fitting for a reflection on forgotten moments of film history.

I've been chugging through the new CNN doc series The Seventies over the weekend and it's really, really good. Great production values (produced by Tom Hanks) and content, it's definitely worth a watch. I hope it comes to Netflix, etc. soon after it finishes airing on TV. The way you hear people talk about The Story of Film's narrator you'd think it was a pitch-shifted Gilbert Gottfried, but it's a soft spoken Irish man? It has never made sense to me.

Watched this last night, it's an incredibly depressing film and an excellent argument against the death penalty. I appreciated the director's empathy for Aileen, he doesn't justify her actions, but he reminds the audience that she was a victim of systematic abuse who should have been in a hospital instead of a prison. Have you guys seen MTV's "White People" yet? It's a solid watch. Really makes you think about how privileged some of us are -- something we shouldn't take for granted. I love how angry that doc makes racists considering how softball it is. Of course, they were angry when it was initially announced, so it's not like they actually watched it.

Anyone seen Évocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie yet? It's being billed as a new film by CNN but I put it in my Netflix queue 8 months ago and it's credited as being made in 2012. Downey has always struck me as the godfather of modern right wing media, spawning Springer, Rush and now Trump, in the ways that he normalized the disintegration of polite discourse and general common decency and i find him fascinating in that sense. I'm not really sure if there was someone before him that brought this sort of circus act style to the mainstream of modern discourse, at least in the areas that he did. If there was someone, I don't know about them.

Wilkos' show is spectacularly pointless, even for its genre. He brings people with problems on, yells at one of them, then tells them to get out of there while the crowd cheers. He doesn't even pretend to resolve anything.

I just finished the Hellraiser documentary, Leviathan. It's not very good. There is a laaaaarge amount of time dedicated towards patting Clive Barker on the back, and it takes about a full hour to actually get to the part where they start talking about the production of the film. As far as four hour long "making of" documentaries go, it's nowhere near as good as Never Sleep Again (coincidentally, Leviathan has a ton of weird Nightmare lambasting). EDIT: Holy poo poo, Never Sleep Again is a whole half hour shorter and covers five more movies. Lady Naga fucked around with this message at 14:28 on Aug 31, 2015 |
