are there any new improvements in windows 10? like does anything run faster? Also, is there anything now integrated into the operating system that wasn't before (such as how newer versions of windows can open zip files)? any programs that come with windows like media player or something would count for me. I'm just curious as to any such developments.

Starts faster than 7 for me. The quad-screen snapping and digital desktops are really handy. Cortana would play music just by asking, but she's still sulking.

There are a few marginal performance improvements (boot time, small FPS gains in some games) but otherwise no. The new features are basically Cortana which is a weird voice assistant named after a halo character that no one is going to actually use in six months and task view which is virtual desktops, a few niche users might check that one out. DirectX 12 but no real DX12 games yet. Edge can read PDF files and poo poo like that but its useless without an extension API. It's Windows as you already know it more or less. So don't go into it expect a big blockbuster feature. The upgrade is free for awhile so that's something. You can put it off for awhile if that's what you're asking.

I'm trying to get Cortana to control VLC. I managed to get halfway there, by learning that when you tell Cortana to play music, what's happening behind the scenes is that Windows creates a .wpl playlist and opens it in the default player for that file format, which by default is usually Groove. So, theoretically, if I can associate .wpl files with VLC, Cortana will play media in VLC by default. Here's where I'm stuck. I'm using VLC for Windows Store. It doesn't show up in the list of available programs to associate it with .wpl in the Default Programs control panel. And since it's from Windows Store, it's not installed in a viewable directory, so I can't select it from the file explorer either (I managed to do this with an earlier, non-Windows-Store version of VLC, but I want to use the new modern interface). How the gently caress do I associate this file type with VLC for Windows Store?

No AV will give you protection from clicking yes to things but yeah otherwise most people who are reading a forum like this are probably fine. Let's be honest, most AV software is reactive rather than proactive anyway. Windows Defender can't be permanently disabled without installing another AV, just a FYI. So even if you don't want it, you have to get something else.

This isn't D&D, but yes, there's many issues with letting governments (or anyone) have backdoor access. Just from a technical perspective one huge problem is that it can be exploited. A government agency acting without approval or oversight (as has happened) is only one possible scenario. Any "backdoor", regardless of who supposedly holds the key, can be discovered and exploited to run malicious code or steal data or who knows what.

If you're like me and prefer a vertical taskbar, but want it really narrow, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is now out of alpha and can be downloaded without being forced to donate. Also the latest WinAero Tweaker lets you enable the Aero Lite theme which has coloured titlebars without the bugginess of the other method. Now if I can just find a way to move the start button to the bottom of the taskbar and things will be perfect.

She used IE before, which seems to be gone in windows 10. I got her back into her email so she'd calm down about everything being gone. Then a few minutes later she told me she'd figured out how to roll back to windows 7 on her own. Everything has been quiet for a while, so I guess it's going well. Or she's left the house on a murder spree. Either way, op success.

Well in the case of accidental updates from clueless family members, keep in mind most of the time their old windows setup will get moved into windows.old where you can fish out Firefox or chrome profiles and copy it in. No idea how doomed you are regarding Internet Explorer's autocomplete settings - can than even be recovered?

How good is Windows 10 at synchronizing other services? I always kept my "Google poo poo" and my "Microsoft poo poo" separate. I like to have my contacts, email, calendar, and other such things with Google because I use an Android phone and like to have easy access to that when I'm not in front of a computer and I figured it would be kind of silly to have more than one collection of contacts. At the same time I would like my PC to be able to access those things upfront without having to use a web browser, but it seems up until now I never really had that option(?). Mail and Calendar seem to communicate with it just fine. It even correctly imported my Gmail labels! Though I'm a bit disappointed in Mail because it doesn't seem to have a lot of features (such as "unread first"  ).I also loathe Google Docs and prefer to use Office for literally everything Office does and last I remember the OneDrive (then SkyDrive) Android app was absolute trash a few years ago and I could never retrieve my files from it. I'd love to consolidate everything because I really hate being dependent on two separate services like this, and always have.

I need to ask a really dumb question that'll probably make me look like an idiot. I upgraded a few days ago and hadn't noticed until tonight, but my CD/DVD drive is completely missing from my device manager. No yellow exclamation point indicating it's not working, it's just completely disappeared. I tried downloading the drivers from ASUS' website but they told me I already had the most updated driver. The tray still opens and closes and I can hear the disc spinning in the tray when I close it, but nothing comes up and I can't even see a D: drive in my File Explorer. My Google skills are really weak right now and all I can gather is that this was a problem with upgrading from 7 to 8.1 but I went straight from 7 to 10 and I have no idea what the best way to fix it is. Anyone else run into this?

The Win10 ones may have improvements to make them work, I haven't tried those yet. The Win8 calendar definitely didn't, the mail app did but had some weird quirks that I can't remember off the top of my head.

I kind of like the Calendar app, but Mail is kind of a pain to use right now because I'm too hooked on Gmail's layout. How is (Android) phone syncronization via the Phone Companion for photos and other files? I'd be okay with something like that working because I really loving hate Google+ and photos and all of Google's other awful  social networking services.
