Time zones are a thing you know.

For serious, nightly on PST is almost all Japanese players, but day time during the weekend I consistently see American players

I might be.
For me it seems to vary between 80%-60% japanese players, on ranked at least. Most of my matches everyone else is in kana.

Also, I ditched the Krak-on for the Custom Dual Squelcher. I wanted the Beacons and needed the range, and being able to climb any building with ease is great. For people not obsessed with beacons, the Slosher is pretty good for quickly climbing walls too.

Flounder Heights is dope. It's definitely a bit chaotic right now, but it seems like there are so many possibilities with the multitude of vertical approaches. I love how the stages they release get increasingly dynamic, dimensionally speaking.

Note to self: don't play ranked on New Map Day. I know the map is new and cool, but that doesn't mean you should wander around doing nothing for half the match.

Also, is there some reason why hardly anyone ever seems to use squid jumps? I fell from 40 points into A down to about 60 in A-, and a huge number of those games were lost since nobody was ever jumping to teammates. the worst was where I single-handedly took out three guys, grabbed the rainmaker, then got splatted by the lone guy I missed. All three of my teammates were spawned and running around near our base THE ENTIRE TIME.

too many vertical surfaces you have to spend time painting, also afaik the enemy base is completely protected so you can't bass rap

I'm interested in the bridge stage, since it takes place on a structure that's usually as flat and straight as possible. Maybe it'll be a simple map, but I'm hoping for a crazy step up from the Port Mackerel stage. Edit: I just looked at the screenshots of what we've seen so far since I had the wiki open for Port Mackerel's stage (I can never remember the name of that stage...) and nevermind. It's nothing like a simple map or Port Mackerel. Still pretty interested in seeing it. :D

So far the thing I don't like about Flounder Heights is that the multiple paths all eventually converge into one and it's a dead end. I would have preferred to see an additional connection so you could loop around to somewhere else when you get close to the enemy base. Most other maps have something like that.

Live, laugh, kupo!

Man, on Flounder I thought I was so clever for figuring out that if you go all the way to the right and do a long jump, you can *barely* reach the grate across the way and come up behind the other team. It took three games to realize I could just paint and squid up the wall there if I missed the jump. Still a good ambush route when everyone's focused on the Rainmaker.

Is there a backdoor for the Rainmaker on that level? Going right (attacker's perspective) is a chokepoint deathtrap, and it looks like left has a bumper to block access.

Supercar Gautier
Jun 10, 2006

In Rainmaker you have a choice between middle-right (low ground) and far-right (upper ground -- there's a concrete block added to let you up there). No path on the left AFAIK.

LOVING splat zones.

Not loving that I can't just boot up the game and play that mode whenever I want. The mode rotation is a loving awful decision.

Plus, I guess there's no way to play the non turf war modes in anything other than a (generally) winner-take-all XP system.

What a load of bollocks.

The slosher is amazing in Flounder Heights, you can cover so much ground if you're up high and easily get people up on the buildings if you're below them. Just got up to A- rank thanks to that!

I've come to appreciate this design decision. You can only do so much with a limited player supply, so there's always an inherit problem of stretching it too far with various modes at the same time. Granted, that sounds silly at the moment since this turned out to be a smash hit, but the developers tried something completely new at the time and had to reduce their risks somehow in case this turned out to be a modest seller or worse. Cod knows I've played FPS games where they had several modes in play but not enough players who were playing/interested.

Anyway, the real answer to all your problems is Private Games, but that requires some effort.

Just posting to say that the mode and stage rotation are awesome decisions and really keeps the game fresh. It differentiates this game from others in adjacent genres, which isn't necessarily a good thing by itself, but it hinders people from becoming one-stage one-loadout masters while being worthless with any other combination. It makes me think each time I boot up, what gear for that particular combination of stages in this mode? and that's cool. Also, I think we could all do with a bit less instant gratification our way right now all the time bullshit. Situation not to your ideal standards 100% of the time? Handle it. Get Gud

I agree, but please add a third stage to the rotation, because as-is it's very likely that a casual hour-a-day player won't encounter one stage or another for a long while

I'm inclined to agree. They've definitely got enough maps now that they should be able to have three at a time in both Ranked and Turf Wars without them winding up alternating the same maps between the two over and over.

I'm willing to wait 'till the bridge is added, that way they got 12 maps, so three and three on each rotation gives them half the maps per rotation, so that sorta works out well.

Yeah 3 maps would make me fine with it. With only two the odds of getting sent to the same stage over and over for the entire session are too high.

Also Splatfest needs to rotate the maps at least once rather than have the same ones for the entire day.

I think the way map rotations work might break Splatfest progress. I still suspect there's a sneaky server restart/refresh hidden in that round break. And yes, the 50-50-90* rule is a real bitch.

I think that keeping the same maps for the full 24 hours keeps it more fair -- what if you can't play during the part of the day when a map you're better at is available? It could skew the results.

The Great Twist
This game is so good. Why is this game so good?

I tried out my first few ranked matches, and started with splat zone on that towers map. We all beelined to our zone, and I thought it would be a good idea to stay on the defence when everyone else went to capture the enemy zone. Ended with a 12-3 k/d trying to solo defend against 3 enemies. Unfortunately my counterpart on the other team did a bit better, and the game timed out at a very close score with a loss.

I also bought my first roller and had a blast. I got the one with the teleport beacon and kraken. In the mall map I can run down one of the side paths, drop a beacon, and then immediately bulldoze the centre chokepoint with kraken. Since I'm playing at the baddie level, both teams are just blindly firing over the half-pipes at that point, so sneaking over and sharking people works great.

Well I just interesting stat by a Krak-on Roller where they would place the beacons in locations next to high ground in Walleye Warehouse. If anyone was near them she would super jump and snipe you from the super jump. The roller would clip you the way down if you were to close to the edge or the flicker got you from a distance.
