Do we know the technical differences between 10 "mobile" on an intel SoC phone and 10 on a standard laptop? With an intel x86 based chip, it should be able to run anything (if plugged into a monitor/KB/M), right? I'm specifically thinking of a surface phone type thing.

For some reason W10 won't play mp3s in any media software on my main PC, saying it cant play the file type. My audio interface is working fine (been jamming on Ableton all afternoon, no issues) and my laptop, which I upgraded to 10 a couple weeks ago, has no issues playing mp3s.

The legacy Internet Explorer worked like, once on my work laptop and is now unable to go to any website and acts like I don't have an internet connection. Edge and Chrome are fine. Any ideas?

And then, if it actually suspended, once a while there's a mystery wake trigger (which powercfg.exe doesn't even list) pulling the box out of suspend, leaving it vulnerable for an update reboot. Yeah, that's why I tell it to not reboot until next Tuesday. I mean I guess it would be nice to have an infinite delay but in practice it's just not that big of a deal.

As a gamer and programmer, is Windows 10 worth the (free) upgrade? I've been using Windows 7 Pro 64bit ever since it came out, I'm getting a brand new computer system soon, and I intend to just keep using the same OS since I don't see a reason to upgrade. As a power user, the previews I've seen of the 10 start screen thing don't look very user friendly. Edit: VVVVVV Thanks. Think I'll stick with 7 until the end of this year at least. Things are fragmented. The new control panel is, as it stands today, just terrible. Half of the things you expect to find there are there, the others are in the old control panel (same as win7). I've upgraded and having a decent experience, others not so much. I don't mind the problems, but unless you're willing to be frustrated, just stick with 7 for another 6 months. You can always upgrade by then.

I say if you rely on the machine in order to make a living, I would hold off until Windows 10 is really completely out of beta and a few patches come through. You aren't missing out on anything big, unless you consider being a Microsoft Honorary QA Team Member a big deal.

The default photo viewer in 10 annoyed me, so I changed it back to Windows Photo Viewer. But I've run into an annoyance - when I plugged my camera in to my computer, all seemed normal. But when I opened a photo to view it, I no longer have the option to scroll through the photos on my camera. You have to open one, then close it, then open another, having to return to the thumbnails each time. Has anyone else run into this? It works normally with any photos in a folder on my hard drive(s).

Checked the event viewer, something was causing my CPU to register at 5.8Ghz instead of the 4.4ghz that its been at for the 3+ years I've own it. I'm guessing that whenever the processor hit the throttle it would lead to a freeze. My bios still had the CPU multiplier at 44 and blk of 100.5. Something within the OS was causing that speed increase and as far as I know I dont have anything like that installed.

Was watching Gladiator before I started the upgrade from Win 7. After upgrading, I played it again and the audio is a lot crisper than before with this basic 2.1 setup, no setting changes. Improved downmixing? Whatever, I approve!

I installed Irfanview (I haven't needed that in years, takes me back to installing ACDSee on Win98 and 2000) but you can only scroll through a couple of photos before this happens: This is from viewing the thumbnails on the camera's memory card, double clicking on one to open it with Irfanview, then clicking the arrow in either direction to view the other images on the memory card. If I try to open the camera's folder with Irfanview, it doesn't exist.

Is there a way to get the file explorer icon on the taskbar to bring up recent folders rather than recent files and frequently used folders when I right-click it, the way it worked for me in Win 7? The settings don't seem to allow for it.

I thought my difficulties might have something to with it being an upgrade install from Windows 7, rather than a clean one. I have another computer just to my left that is running the latest Insider Preview of Windows 10, so I tried my camera on it. First off, the default Photos app isn't acceptable to me because it will not allow me to click through the photos the way I want to (there is no left/right arrow). So I installed Irfanview, and went to the thumbnails. Click on the first photo, and it opens it, but neither the left or right arrow does anything (they are greyed out). Open another photo, and now you have two photos that you can go back and forth on. Apparently you can only view the photos that are in the temp folder, you cannot view the photos that are on the camera's memory card directly. If I go to Irfanview thumbnails, my Canon camera (plugged in to the USB port and turned on, plainly visible in File Explorer) is not visible to Irfanview. This is annoying, and I hope it is fixed soon.

I checked back a few pages and didn't find anything, and a google search reveals a bunch of other people having the same problem (though I haven't found a solution yet): despite my power settings (never inactivate hard drives, never go to sleep, shut down monitors after 10 minutes of inactivity), my PC will shut down after it's been on for a few hours. Windows 7 never did this, and I'm running the same stuff on 10 as I was there, so it's not like I'm suddenly overloading things at idle and shutting down from heat. It's also possible that it's hibernating; it's hard to tell. Keyboard commands don't wake anything up, but the lights are on in a manner I would not expect if the computer was actually off. Is there some hidden power setting I'm missing? Is it tied to the monitor shut-down time? (Also, reading the Optimus woes makes me glad I haven't updated my laptop yet. Whoever said it's been a shitshow from the start was dead on; even in 7, you find games that need special attention they would not need if it was just using one GPU). 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is now out of beta for Win10, for all those who like narrow vertical taskbars. He also has some utility out that changes how Win10 calculates colours, to give you brighter colours on the taskbar etc. though I have not tried it.

A few weeks ago, my dad updated his old-ish laptop from 7 to 10, and now in the last couple of days he says his start button isn't working with a left click; right click's fine. I've done a little searching and told him to run a sfc /scannow while I find anything more specific. I did see a post here which mentions opening up Powershell, but while it does mention that the release version of 10 has the issue as well as preview builds, the page doesn't seem to say whether the solution is still recommended for the release build. Any ideas or suggestions before I have him do a refresh?

I asked before but I think it got buried, is there any way to prevent Windows 10 (pro) from rebooting? I have it set to "notify to schedule restart" but if an update comes while I'm not there it just goes ahead and reboots itself for some reason. Have woken up to all the poo poo I had open gone twice now because I leave my computer on all the time. This can't really be normal right? Don't people run servers on Win 10?
