I came back to 17 posts thinking that I had sparked something on the Muppets. Nope instead it's Keane tearing libertarians a new one. Maybe he'll help them empty their poopy selves faster. Just watched It Follows. Great horror movie. One of the best I've seen in a while while avoiding being too meta about the genre. I really enjoy meta-horror movies, but sometimes you just want something that plays it straight.

is it pretentious that I now list LaTeX using its own logo on my resume? i think so. but i really hope that half a person in academia who has never seen LaTeX before will one day see it and go "HOW? I MUST CALL THIS GUY TO ASK" and then ... i have that person right where i want them

I was at Rosarito beach years ago which is south about 1/2 hour from Tijuana, Mexico, and it's covered in trash. My friend said "So this is how every beach would be if libertarians ran the world." Seemed on point.

Water-front property being a desirable thing is an extremely recent phenomenon in most regions of the world. For a long time, sewage was allowed to flow toward the shoreline and it wasn't uncommon to just dump garbage straight onto beaches. You can blame both lax environmental standards and a lack of focus on urban development for that. Every time I hear someone argue in favor of decreasing the power of environmental regulatory agencies, I think of that. I grew up on the outskirts of a city whose river caught on fire almost once every decade between 1860 and 1966, with several of these blazes taking days to put out. People complain that the waterfront isn't developed and that people were "stupid" to put the airport and factories around, what should now be, the most valuable land in the city. They often don't realize that just a few decades ago, these properties were absolutely disgusting. From what I hear, they are still dredging garbage that was buried years ago.

Everything is created by the players and there are no NPCs other than the wildlife. Though the first few times I played it I played with groups that were more into the crafting and village maintaining with very few combat oriented players. I enjoyed it. There's a patch coming out overhauling the graphics and presumably the gameplay has had some updates since I last played it. So starting a new village and picking people out of the SA Mafia Community for it.

Morning Mafia thread. I had a good weekend. I went to a Bond themed birthday party and got to break out my tux, I had lunch at a trendy cafe that's full of plants and greenery, had a nice dinner at home with my girlfriend, and tonight we're going out for dinner for her birthday. But best of all I came through with my promise of actually writing PMs and starting a game.
