I know some people that failed hard out of every business idea they tried and declared bankruptcy, and they finally started their own church. Suddenly they're loving rich somehow. They spun their church into one of those get high on Jesus drug rehab things and rent the dope heads out for what basically amounts to slave labor because the program gets paid for the work the dopers do.

They used to show up for family get-togethers with some of their "students" in tow until they were told to quit bringing the meth heads around to case out grandma's house.

A lot of those rules were to keep people from dying. Like not eating pork. It's a whole lot easier to tell people it's a sin rather than learning how to properly cook it.

Homosexuality was probably similar. Back then you needed all the kids your poor tired uterus could pump out and a man pulling his pud out behind a tent, or worse yet getting another guy to pull his pud meant two less men putting babies in bellies.

Other rules were probably like Van Halen's "no brown M&M's" rule. Not important in and of themselves, but meant to make sure you were following all the other decrees.

And then there were the really important rules like not gathering sticks on Sundays. You really didn't want to get caught doing that.

Labor camp?

quote:

Each student will serve as a volunteer in some fashion from 8-10 hours per day, and partial days on Saturdays. All work is considered donated services. Please understand that if you do not work as unto the Lord, you will not remain in the home. Proverbs 14:23 says, “in all labor there is profit” at Reformers Unanimous we believe work is God’s divine design for every man, and woman. Hard work develops character which is vital to making right decisions once you have finished with the program.

All students in the Discipleship Schools are required to maintain employment in the ministry, or with outside employers depending on particular job skills. These jobs enable students to learn hard work, character, and successfully coping with a real world environment, and remain stable. If you arrive without a strong work ethic, you will receive one while in this program. It may be one of the most important ingredients missing in your life.

Here are the 10 Principles

1. If God’s against it, so are we. Galatians 5:19-242.
2. Every sin has its origin in the heart. Jeremiah 17:9, Proverbs 4:23, Romans 13:14
3. It is easier to keep the heart clean than after it has been defiled. Proverbs 22:3 & 6:27-28
4. It is not possible to fight a fleshly appetite by indulging in it. Ecclesiastes 5:10, James 1:14-15
5. Small compromises lead to great disasters (or little sins lead to big sins). Luke 16:10, Matthew 6:24, Romans 6:16
6. Those who do not love the Lord will not help us serve the Lord. John 5:18-20, Proverbs 25:15
7. Our sinful habits do hurt those who are following us. Romans 14:7, I Corinthians 10:23-24
8. It is not possible to fight a fleshly temptation with fleshly weapons. II Corinthians 10:3-5, I John 4:4
9. We lose our freedom of choice after we have chosen our actions. The consequences of our choices are inevitable, incalculable and up to God. Proverbs 5:22-23, 20:17, 9:17-18
10. God balances guilt with blame. When we accept the blame for our actions, God, by our repentance and confession, will eliminate the guilt. I John 1:9

Well, you can seem pretty confident when you walk into the club and, in your mind, are above everyone there. The strippers flaunting their bodies all over the place for money, they're going straight to hell and should be kissing your feet for bringing them the word of our saviour, Jesus Christ.

The men, well they obviously have no self control, otherwise they would be at home forcing their wives to have sex with them, like good Christian men SHOULD do.

The Southern mom attempted to empathize with the reality star mom of four. "What is Anna Duggar supposed to do? She can't divorce because the religious environment she was brought up would blame her and ostracize her for it," Kirkland wrote of Anna's predicament. "Even if she would risk that, she has no education and no work experience to fall back on, so how does she support her kids? From where could she summon the ability to turn her back on everything she ever held to be sacred and safe? Her beliefs, the very thing she would turn to for comfort in this kind of crisis, are the VERY REASON she is in this predicament in the first place. How can she reconcile this? Her parents have utterly, utterly failed her. Think of this: somewhere, Anna Duggar is sitting in prayer, praying not for the strength to get out and stand on her own, but for the strength to stand by this man she is unfortunately married to. To lower herself so that he may rise up on her back."

As for the Levitical laws and the like, only the Jews were held to that standard in order to set an example for the world to look to. I you weren't an ethnic Jew, only the Ten Commandments applied. So the fundies aren't even looking at the right list of abolished commands. Really, the only commandments that apply today boil down to "accept Jesus' gift of paying the debt of your sin, which is (spiritual) death," and love your neighbor and your enemies as you would want to be loved in return. There's a reason Christianity got super-popular and that's because it cut through all the bullshit. Well, at least until we added back in old bullshit or made new bullshit to throw on top. The very core of Christianity was summed up by Bill and Ted, "be excellent to each other."

It hurts so much having been raised super fundie at times and looking in from the outside now. I was military brat that moved every two years or less till I was 18 and I got everything from ultra fundie southern baptist mixed with Mormon-lite(RLDS, or CoC now, how my mom was raised) to black gospel style, casual praise poo poo, Catholicism-lite(Lutheran) to fringe poo poo like Christian Science. Yeah, they're struggling without the show income. I remember reading that they were begging TLC for the sexual counseling show just to get a steady paycheck back. But I doubt TLC would want anything to do with them, especially on a show that brings back the whole issue and puts it front and center and just magnifies why these people are insanely creepy.

Josh molesting killed the show. Everything else Josh does after that is just sinking the religion and showing everybody how hosed up it is.

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

I was thinking about this. 19 kids takes a heavy financial toll. Especially when one of the parent's aren't allowed to work because of their sinful, inferior gender. Losing that TLC paycheck would have been a huge blow, even for a tax-exempt church like the Duggar family is.

They'll always have a fanbase of crazy fundies ready to throw money at them, but without the TV show, those fundies will quickly forget about them and throw their money away on the next Creflo E Dollar, or snake oil salesman that catches their eye. So I could see how they were desperate for their molestation show to go on.

Perhaps JimBob could make money on the personal appearance/speaking circuit, but that racket is pretty full already and after all of this I reckon there would be few, if any, places that would book him.

This isn't the core of Christianity at all. Being good to others doesn't result in salvation. This is explicitly stated several times in the Bible.

The core is that we are born sinners, and if we refuse to accept this, we deserve to be burned for eternity. The only way out is to allow an innocent man to be punished for your crimes.

Odd how often moderate Christians seem to forget that the Prince of Peace threatens disobedience with eternal torment in a Hell only he seems to be aware of.
