Well had to uninstall and reinstall my network adapter and then also uninstall then re set up my Virtual switch for Hyper-v but otherwise so far so good.

The right click on the start menu button theme is the same as when you right click elsewhere on the taskbar.

Is the Windows tablet thread really dead? Is there no successor?

My 1st generation Microsoft Surface Pro is aging something fierce. I put it in a backpack with a connected type cover 2 and some books one day. It wasn't under too much pressure but now the touch screen doesn't work consistently. Using my finger it sometimes jumps all over the place like this image taken in Paint:

But it's not consistent. Sometimes it still works fine like this:

I noticed it after this backpack trip but also after a Windows update, so I do't know which caused it. Google isn't helping either. I also installed linux mint on it but the grub menu doesn't show up so i can't properly test it. The Haus of Tech Support hasn't given me any answers so I might just have to make a reddit account to post on the surface or surface linux subreddit, but I thought we had threads for this. =/

Any advice on what to do or where to post? I would like my touchscreen to work consistently!

Also, Win+X / Right Clicking the start icon is yet another context menu style, although perhaps it's just the system dark theme of the standard one, not sure.

They work just fine on Windows 10. I use my ds4 and a program. Called ds4tool to do the trick.

Settings -> Personalization -> Colors -> Show color on Start, taskbar, and action center.

Unfocused window will be grey, focused will be accent. Some bad windows will not honor this still.

DS4Windows cant mask it as a 360 controller as easily, but it has a built in workaround. DS4s work fine.

I'm wondering if there's some sort of RAM compression, forced paging or other memory management scheme going on behind the scenes? Basically, whenever I'm working on our game, which involves Visual Studio and a good ~4GB average footprint from Unreal Engine 4, I'll often have Chrome tabs go inactive, resulting in a full refresh whenever I'd open them. This isn't exactly convenient when it decides to deactivate my Spotify or Google Music tab. It's not exclusive to Chrome either, when I reached near max usage once, I actually looked at UE4Editor's working memory set get instantly pushed down to 1GB (with a corresponding decrease in responsiveness) before steadily working its way back up.

Windows Blog posted:

In Windows 10, we have added a new concept in the Memory Manager called a compression store, which is an in-memory collection of compressed pages. This means that when Memory Manager feels memory pressure, it will compress unused pages instead of writing them to disk. This reduces the amount of memory used per process, allowing Windows 10 to maintain more applications in physical memory at a time. This also helps provide better responsiveness across Windows 10. The compression store lives in the System process’s working set. Since the system process holds the store in memory, its working set grows larger exactly when memory is being made available for other processes. This is visible in Task Manager and the reason the System process appears to be consuming more memory than previous releases.

Ah, thanks. Now that you mention it, it was System that was growing quickly, not UE4. Back when this happened, I'd tried searching for "Windows 10 RAM compression", but all I could find was a reddit thread that was adamant that MS wouldn't use memory compression because it's inefficient. I wonder if there's a way to disable this? I certainly don't care for the current implementation which knocks out tabs and Visual Studio nilly willy.

I've picked up two PS3 controllers lately for $10 a piece, there is a great tool called SCP (sonic? crush? productions? I forget) that doesn't require any config, just install and plug in your PS3 controller and way to go. It even allows for Bluetooth but I haven't fooled around with it enough to make that work.

Well, I don't see what else could be causing programs to suddenly experience a drastic decrease in working set memory while System's skyrockets. I don't think it's new to an insider preview and they only chose to mention it just now, possibly accompanying some actual improvements to that functionality in said insider preview.

I found the solution to my photo scrolling issues.

Folder options:

The default setting is Quick access.

The option is This PC.

Changing that setting from Quick access to This PC allowed me to scroll through photos on both my camera and my phone when they are attached to my computer by a USB cable. Coming from Windows 7, this folder option is completely new to me (is it there in Win8?), so I had to stumble across it before I could change it and solve my problem.

Decompressing in-memory is really fast, and the compression should only kick in when you're somewhat low on ram. I'd be surprised if that's the problem, rather than a driver hogging your memory. Have you checked if there's any page file access while things come back?

"Somewhat low on RAM", as in a game engine editor taking up 3-4GB, running alongside Visual Studio compiling a hot reload and a handful of Chrome tabs? Yeah, I'm absolutely low on RAM. Hot reloading is in UE4 has been a pathological memory case before switching to Windows 10 and I definitely ran out of RAM on my poor old 8GB workstation.

I'm extremely skeptical that it's a driver issue because the timing fits perfectly -- System memory goes up, UE4Editor/Chrome/etc. memory goes down. I could always snoop around with WDK a bit to be sure but yeah.

I have no doubts that the RAM compression/decompression is fast, what bothers me is that it's not transparent (Chrome tabs deloading).

It's like a page file but faster. If tabs are deloading that is absolutely not the memory compression that shouldn't even be in your version.

Uh, if I understood things right, it's implemented somewhere in the virtual memory manager and should therefore be transparent. What's probably happening is that Chrome monitors memory usage and things don't add up anymore as it expects it, because total memory usage appears to raise even more when it starts allocating backing memory in the System process, so it starts killing tabs due to ostensibly overwhelming memory pressure.

They really should lie about double-allocated (normal and being-compressed) pages. The actual pressure hasn't changed, so don't account those pages to userspace until the compression is finished. Too many applications are pressure-aware to make a sudden fake usage spike like that a good idea.

It definitely doesn't make sense to display compressed pages as straight occupied, as long as they could potentially be offloaded to a page file. The same way memory used for disk cache counts as "available", though not "free".
