He's black and from the bible belt. When he was 15 he assaulted and kidnapped an 18 year old white woman and forced her to perform oral sex. It took until he was 20 for the sentencing and everything to be completed, so unless he gets paroled, he will be 60 when he gets out. What he did is horrible and wrong, and it's entirely possible there are details that aggravated the judge, jury, or prosecutor, but it just never quite sat right with me. I mean, it sounds to me like the fucker should've been put to death, but, given that minors can get neither the death penalty nor life sentences, 40 years sounds like the closest thing to justice that could've occurred (though it's too bad he couldn't have either been tried more quickly, or else tried as an adult and sentenced either to death or to life imprisonment if it really had to take that long). I know in my small town if a girl accuses a (white) guy of rape, half the town just immediately starts calling her a slutty liar (with dog whistle language) and harasses her till she decides to "forget" the incident and charges get dropped, yet if it's a black guy, no matter the crime, everyone just assumes they're 150% guilty.

I agree that it's not worthy of the death penalty or life in prison, but kidnapping and rape is one of those crimes where you're not going to get a lot of sympathy for the perpetrator no matter how harshly he was sentenced compared to a white man. The kind place where the Good Christians will bend over backwards to give you a hand ... as long as you're a white, God-fearing Republican. What's the point of releasing a 60 something year old violent sex offender back into society? You might as well kill them, seeing as they're unemployable and barred from living in any type of affordable rental unit. Dude hosed up bad but barring a radical shift in how society views ex-convict sex offenders he is condemned to misery and poverty once he is released.

Without knowing his specific case I couldn't begin to come up with a plan to help him rehabilitate, but I can tell you it's definitely possible if you can get him to buy in. I wish our prison system was based around actual rehabilitation because punishing people for the sake of punishing them is stupid, wastes money, and just ends in recidivism when they get out and can't function in the real world (or have any motivation to do so). It's a sad system.

I thought at one point he was as old as 17 when the molestation happened? Also, there really is no reason to just assume the incidents that were admitted to are the only ones. He probably did molest more girls, more times, in worst ways, for longer periods of times, then they have admitted too.
