Well, it looks like the new Jepsen album is getting good reviews at least. As a straight, 30-something white indie rock male, it's weird that I've latched onto a pop album so strongly, but this thing just hits what I like about pop songs every once in a while, but it just does it over and over on nearly every track. And for every review that says she lacks personality, I start to think that that might be a good thing, because I find it easier to relate to her songs than most pop music. Lovelorn singing just makes more sense for me than anthems about rear end shaking. "Run Away With Me" also sounds like it could be the opening track to Drive 2, so that's something.

Definitely a solid disc, it is in no way really cohesive but each track is individually pretty dope.

Alessia Cara, who put out Here a couple months ago (which was great) has an LP coming out tomorrow that she's already shared on her Youtube page with cute videos she filmed around her house/a hotel room. It's pretty solid; Here is already a proven "good song", and Outlaws is a very Amy Winehouse-y number that really shows off her voice. Seventeen sounds the most radio friendly, and the other two are pretty good, not stand-out but they show off her voice and her ear for music, which both make me think she has a lot of potential. I'm excited to see her come up in the biz, if she works with the right people she could really flourish.

Having seen her headlining "sneak peek set" last night, she's also pretty solid live. The show was short --- even with two openers, it was over by 9 p.m. --- but it included all of the Four Pink Walls EP and two cover songs.

It was a nice surprise to come back from that show and find out that my iTunes pre-order for that EP had already downloaded on my computer, though.

Edit:
Before the show, she went down the queue outside the venue and took photos with everybody. That was cool of her.

The "Space Oddity" (1969) reference + title reference to Bowie's half-brother Terry + "Andy Warhol" sfx :allears:

Maybe I just like that she has all the "right" influences (Nina, Billie, vintage jazz, Spector, Gainsbourg, the VU, Bowie, Nancy & Lee, Cohen). Even HBTB with the modern trap beats has a bit of Andrews Sisters influence in the vocals, at least according to her.

CHVRCHES is taking that same route that too many briefly-hyped indie darling groups take; release one album with a new-yet-safely-trendy sound and then a follow-up album where all of the songs are pretty much reduced to a basic pop song-structure. Everything here just seems so slick, but at least Lauren gives it a sort of pleasant lift above her contemporaries.

The frequent criticism of Carly Rae Jepsen that she has no personality doesn't exactly seem unwarranted. But it seems, inexplicably, like MOR pop is more critically prized when it comes to female artists; just compare her Metacritic score to, say, "Electra Heart" or whatever.

The full album actually came out on Friday. I'm loving it so far; something about the way each track builds up energy hits the perfect note for me, and she's super consistent about it, if that makes any sense.

I really do not like that New Americana song, it sounds like a bad Lorde ripoff and some of the lyrics are very Hot Topic if that makes sense. Which makes me sad because by all accounts Halsey comes off a very smart and awesome person and I want to root for her. Hopefully her next single is a little more up my alley.

That really doesn't sound like a Taylor Swift song. At all.

Also it's been months and I still can't stop listening to "Marvin Gaye" occasionally. Why did it not get more popular? I think it's extremely catchy and pulls off what it want to do very well.

The Miley Cyrus / Flaming Lips collaboration album Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz is out now on Soundcloud:
https://soundcloud.com/mileycyrus

I haven't had the time to listen to the whole thing yet (it's a whooping 23 tracks at about 92 minutes), but it's just as weird as you'd assume a collaboration like this would be. 1 Sun is a standout track I think, and reminds me of Gaga actually.

There's also a low budget video for Dooo It!, although it has to be said that apparently the whole album is a homemade/low budget affair. I actually don't like Dooo It very much, but there's some good stuff on the album.

I've been getting through this today and I completely agree with you about 1 Sun (and Dooo It, which is definitely one of my least favorites).

I don't really not like anything so far, but there is a definite variance in terms of quality throughout (which you should expect on a 23 track album)
