It's going to be cheaper for me to buy 17" wheels AND tires, then sell the 2nd set of 19s than to try to buy 19" tires. This is all OBAMAS fault. The most hilarious thing is I remember the selection of 14" tires starting to thin out back sometime around 2006-07, when I had to put tires on my NB Miata, and even less so still when I bought tires for my Volvo 240 or my Ranger. The tire selection for my C10 is downright dismal (but, really, it's the same tires that were available 30 years ago, so it's more that there's been no improvement).

Do you know how hard it is to find 14 inch tires that also have the appropriate load/sidewall rating for my bus? I went into discount tire and told them what vehicle I wanted it for and they said "thanks but no thanks." What's so different between a bus that weighs 3300 pounds with 205/75-14 tires and the 205/75-14 tires I bought for my 4200 pound 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88? For some reason when I tell the tire guys that I'm buying them for the olds they have a dozen different tires but when I say it's for the bus they look up load ratings and tell me that they don't have anything.

rdb posted:Pretty sure cash for clunkers had a fuel economy rating tied in with it, and whatever car that takes 14" economy tires far exceeded that. In this case, I would think rust killed them off. C4c killed off the cheap supply of Cherokees, explorers and the likes. This assumes that the C4C deals only ever got applied to gas-guzzling SUVs and 70s land barges (you know, what C4C was meant to get off the road), and I can assure with with 100% certainty that they didn't. I watched entire tractor trailers full of crushed 90s civics and corollas get hauled away from dealers during the height of that bullshit, cars that still had tons of life left and got well above the C4C mileage rating. Dealers didn't give a gently caress, they were getting free money from the government to sell people cars they didn't need. It was nothing more than a gigantic money grab/bait & switch for the manufacturers and in the end the lower classes got hosed really hard by it, because now there aren't really any cheap, decent, running cars. Not in the abundance that there used to be.

Sure buddy edit: I mean I can buy that the odd one here or there was so hosed up that it didn't pass the MPG requirements but this was like a dozen or so cars that clearly shouldn't have even qualified for C4C.

There were only around 700,000 cars total traded in with the program. Could that really have had any noticeable effect on the supply of old cars? It seems far more likely that most of the old sorry cars just died of natural causes.

Anecdotal evidence is highly reliable and comprehensive for forming educated opinions There isn't a SINGLE civic or corolla in the list of cars. Not one. Furthermore, only about 100k cars were traded in, 570k trucks/vans traded in. This country has over 200 million registered vehicles. Statistical drop in a bucket.

I'm surprised they didn't require the cars to have the body panels all beaten with sledge hammers.
