I remember a similar thing happening a while back where it slowed down and participation was awful, but it did turn around eventually.

Maybe running smaller games with easier rules is better. Maybe we just need some new people and everyone should encourage their friends to play.

Maybe it'll turn around on its own.

That's from July. Newer polls from just the other day have the Liberals pulling ahead significantly in Kingston.

I agree with this, it definitely feels like there is a downturn in both players and activity lately.

I think we need to run another GBS game. Also we need to have more role simplistic games where players feel that they have agency. Role heavy games give certain players HUGE impacts on the game, and then players expect that to happen so they just wait around for someone to either claim results or fake claim results and dont actually read the thread to gain clues through small textual discrepancies.

A GBS game would be good, it was one of the better ways we had of bringing in new blood to the scene.

I also agree that role-heavy games make people too reliant on those roles and not reliant enough on critical thinking, but that's more or less how it's always been.

AFAIK, that's the only actual poll of Kingston (i.e. that surveyed voters in Kingston) taken in the campaign. You'll see projections on sites like 308, but those just take Ontario-wide numbers and apply the swing evenly to each riding. They, by design, can't factor in local, riding-specific factors (like Hsu retiring) or trends.

I'll have to look into it more before October, because obviously I don't want to vote Liberal, but if I have to in order to go against the Conservatives then I will.

I (unsurprisingly) agree with this pretty fully. I think there is an indelible connection between "role madness" games (and by proxy player agency) and player interest in the game of mafia itself.

I dunno maybe but I also feel like if there's something we could do about it we should try. All things come to an end but I'd like SA Mafia's end to be a long time from now.

They really were. If someone here is comfortable with it, I would be fine helping with a GBS game.

Out of curiosity, how many games are run simultaneously at a good time in here? If there are 3 being tracked in vote finder and 4 that I know of currently recruiting, it seems we have a decent amount of players. I don't have anything to base it on though

I recall the old ratio was something like "1-2 big games, 4-5 minigames," but this is just memory which is very fallible. I am sure there is a way to check what the numbers actually were but it'd probably require using votefinder data which I can't/don't know how to use.

5-8 seems like the normal number to me. Hal would be in each and every single one of them.

The average in my mind is 4-6, depending on size, but those also include the Auspol games which are their own things a lot of the time (although we've had some fun crossover).

Really need to have a really flavour involved game in GBS. The Starcraft one was heaps good. Then follow it up with a few newbie games that recruit from the thread when it's over.

i know there hasn't been much overlap but the auspol mafia contingent also enjoys mafia in waves and troughs. I think it's the nature of the game, arguing constantly means you need a break every so often.

My feelings about this are somewhat complicated. I do think large threads of chatter can be intimidating for an outsider, but I also think the chatter does a lot to humanize the community and reduce our natural tendency to pool into cliques. I also think it is easy to break in if someone has the gumption since we are fairly friendly (I think of BottleKnight e.g.).

I also think if we went back to Just Mafia Chat maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but I like having an easy avenue for chatting casually with players (especially since IRC is [IIRC] mostly dead). It fills a nice social niche in my life and I'd be sad if we cut back on it significantly.

yeah and the biggest troughs are now and Christmastime, but it feels like it's been bad even before then.

Its a good point though. I remember one time within the last few months that a person interested in playing came in the thread with a question, and then there was like 2 pages of "What color would your horn be if you were a unicorn" posts. I mean it is what it is, the alternative is a dead thread that no one posts in that falls to page who knows what like the new game thread.

Can you recall about when this was specifically? I try to be mindful of newer players with questions and I would hate to know someone slipped through the cracks.

Mafia is an acquired taste, definitely. I am seriously advocating for a name change into the broader realm of communication-focused games or whatever. We'll pool in more community members by the broadness alone and we can then trick them into playing mafia. :D

For me, springtime is the time when i am most creative and mafia-brained. So September is generally when i run my big mafialike games iirc and player contribution is on the whole fairly decent.
I do still want to run another soldiers game or Civ3, but i need time and the interest before i really get into it.

Yeah I would much rather be a community of people who chit chat and know each other and seem to get along than who are all business and theorycrafting all the time, as long as we're not afraid to do that when the topic comes up (like now!). I think the second group would be much harder to join into as a new person.

Also I would totally be a blue horn how is that a question?

It could be a fun thing to do with mafias and those that like 4X games like civ or dominions 3 etc.

It's pretty simple and can be run in a turn based fashion.
