Haha, I had a mate who said he'd come sheer it but they needed someone to get there faster than couple of days. Being that sheeplike is a bit too much even for sheep and they can die.

I'm not really knowledgeable about animals... is that just some genetic defect? Or do sheep regularly die in the wild from having way too much wool? Or have we actually bred them to be reliant on shearers?

Wild sheep grow wool in the autumn and lose it in the spring. Domestic sheep typically don't shed their wool on their own, and are dependent on shearers to cut it off them. It's a very convenient adaptation from the perspective of the farmer.

Solice Kirsk posted:So a loving vet doesn't know how to use clippers on wool? Is that what I'm getting from this? Sheep shearing is a real art. A good one can do a sheep in 3 minutes. You have to position them properly, and take the right kind of strokes with the blades or the sheep will get cut. A few little nicks are normal, but the gashes done by a beginner can be really bad. The guy who used to shear ours practiced on carcasses at the butcher's. A dog groomer used to working with overgrown Poodles could probably handle a sheep. I had sheep in 4H. Dumber than bricks. My one champion walked on a leash, just like a dog. Yes, I said I had a sheepdog.
