It might not happen as the result of a deliberate choice, maybe Kyon will absentmindedly say "I don't really feel like doing that" at one of Haruhi's suggestions. But to reject her is the one thing nobody has ever done in the whole series.

Endless Eight is a hell of an achievement, but it happened over two months. Anno is doing his own version of EE in the Eva universe and taking a decade+ to do it, which is way more epic.
