One thing living in Japan does is cement the fact that ignoring the opinions of others is a perfectly valid life strategy.
Have not been in a good mood for art the last two weeks and have been drawing mostly scrap. With that said, there are two great female digital artists with kickstarters right now for art books (and both are cheap buys, given shipping from Europe and small production runs):

loish, http://loish.deviantart.com/ and http://loish.net/

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1022149620/the-art-of-loish-a-look-behind-the-scenes

Pernille, http://www.pernilleoe.dk/

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pernilleoe/blush-the-art-of-pernille-rum

I am not related in any way to either artist though I do enjoy their work.

I've been trying to diversify my reference, inspirations and ideas shelf away from Japan, and both those books seem like a good fit to me.

yeah, sorry. I just wasn't too sure if this was only like actual drawings or stuff but I usually modify photos and composite upon them until they look really different.

Here is te thingy I recently set up.

I mostly just want to know if any of this is actually good because I'm spending a lot of time on it around these days and if its not worthwhile I could be doing other stuff haha

this sounds a little self serving but I really just don't have anyone reliable to tell me

Confessions wall and Infrared are very successful. Confessions wall in particular, because I can't spot the filters. As appreciable as legitimate artwork.

Agreed with Delta Echo.

One thing to note if you use your own photos, Sigma makes a line of cameras that store Blue / White, Red, and Green in seperate layers in the raw.

It's an exotic, CCD only used by Sigma, requires special software to process images (free, from Sigma), is not cheap, and only produces best results with prime lenses designed explicitly for each camera due to customizations. If you need another lens, you need a new camera.

With that said, it could be a huge initial leg up on work like yours.

The dp0 ultra wide seems particularly suited.

http://www.sigma-global.com/en/cameras/dp-series/

Note that these cameras are for art, not weddings. A lot of reviews miss the point. :)

(Disclaimer: I do not own one of these but have admired some of the work I have seen done with them.)

I've just discovered the method which works best for me.

I start a tiny tiny canvas, and draw thumbnails of stuff, and eventually start expanding the canvas, blowing things up in resolution and just finish from there.

I had no idea this could work. Been doing the complete opposite of this for years.

Make sure you establish a horizon line and periodically re-check the perspective while zoomed out. I sometimes make the mistake of putting down the structure of a thing in improper perspective, simply due to being zoomed-in and missing the overall perspective.

the action doesn't follow through in the torso cause its just facing forward, and it looks kinda awkward cause of how much movement is implied by the trails

Is there any bit you liked?

Anagram of GINGER

I liked the concept. There's a few things I'd do differently.

I thought the arc of the paint showed a bit too much rotation. I shortened it to what I think looks believable, rather than "ow my hyperextended shoulder."

I think the front-view face detracts from the sense of motion you want.

The lower arm is a bit static and also not matching up with the shoulder. It could be made to look more dynamic, as if it is swinging along with the rest of the image.

I pulled the leg in on the right side, because I think the base of his stance is too stable. He should look like he's about to finish his swing and then step forward with the back foot.

Added a gradient to the paint swipe. I realize it's a single color paint, so to make it technically correct you'd need to use shadows to justify the darker swipe in the foreground.

Added splashes along the plane of the swing.

Sheeeeyit.

That arm and head position is actually a lot better.

I like this style, reminds me of that one 3D megaman game. I like the shading, but is that all baked in? I'd be interested seeing it motion.

The way it works is that the bottom of the tunnel is baked vertex colors that won't change with the mesh, so the textures along the tunnel are just panned along it's surface without actually moving it. the bars actually do just loop from their start position to the end, faking the actual movement quite well. I think the wheels on the elevator turn too, but it was almost never seen due to the camera angle.

As for the robot? that particular one never got implemented in-game due to an oversight. However, all the other ones made looked fairly similiar, and they seemed to look fine in-game. The only difference is their lighting was a bit more uniform, whereas this one has a defined light source.
I did nearly all the weapons that were used in our initial demo, but I haven't finished off all the presentation sheets.

Would photo manipulation be appropriate to post in here? However if there is another thread wholly for photo manips I would love some linkage. c:

I vote yes it counts.

What was your process? You call it photo manipulation but again, like the last example of keyboard and mouse work, I can't 'spot the filter.'

I do use some filtering, but even that has a technique in itself. Like many other photo manip peeps I used to slap one on at full blast setting because I thought it hid all of the ball busting worthy flaws. Careful adjustments of layers, layer opacities, and merging will give it a painterly and unique but sharpened allure.

Basically if I'm gonna use a filter I'll make it so it doesn't look like it has a filter. c:
