The Chinese/Korean sides of the house goes a lot harder on the speaking side of the house compared to the basic course, even in the refreshers, let alone the intermediate and advanced courses according to the folk I knew who went through them.

I could pencilwhip some poo poo up in like half an hour or 45 minutes after formation in the morning and get away with it, but then I was talking to some Russian kids that literally lived homework, doing it in class breaks, lunch, after class and staying up late still working on it and could still barely get it all done. I still pencilwhip my homework after breakfast during intermediate and advanced most of the time, and I'm not some star at the language. Like most things, that generally comes down to what teachers you get. There's always that one that's a stickler for homework, but in my experience in the upper level classes there aren't many instructors like that. When you're taking those classes, the focus isn't on passing a DLPT. You're there because you've already done that and the instructors know it. I've generally found most of them don't give a poo poo*, but those are also arabs. * About homework.

standard.deviant posted:Garmish has a very good language school, they teach all of those there. The reason the military hates money in that case is that they flew someone to Germany from Florida instead of driving up the road to Georgia or taking a shorter flight to Texas or Maryland. The thing is that PLTCE is the cheapest option when it comes to providing language training. Total cost is around 4000 compared to paying someone to stay in a hotel for the same length of time plus per diem for meals. I went to Meade for my first refresher and it cost more than two trips to Garmisch combines.

Halfway through Farsi. I have a 3.7. I have never hated learning a language this much in my life before, and I've learned four - two of them in a fairly intense "learn this now or suffer" way. There is nothing redeemable about this process - it still doesn't even work for like half the people in the class. We're also on some kind of lovely pilot program so all that means for us is more work compared to other classes that is poorly defined and tanks everyone's grades and the MLIs don't give any shits whatsoever while we get dicked over. Also piss jugs in Airmen's wall lockers and stories of roofying at the Bull and the Bear that would put Bill Cosby to shame. This loving place.

Does the Bear and the Bull still have all of the old Mucky Duck signs up inside of it, or did they finally finish changing the interior stuff to match the new name? The one and only time I blacked out in Monterey was after drinking there. Good times.

Don't forget our open working environment! Not many Farsi linguists will get sent outside Augusta for their first tour. If they're AF they could always get sent to Nebraska though. Meade is the holy grail of linguist duties if you actually want to have a decent career since everything happens there and nobody will fly you from HI or GA to MD for decent training that is free to people stationed there.

Although post DLI Hebrew is kind of barren imo, my time their was chill as gently caress compared to some of these stories in retrospect. Every Friday was movie and snacks after lunch break. Teachers told me to stop doing my homework if it went over 2 hours. A classmate had medicine that made him drowsy so the instructors insisted he take naps on the couch in the teachers office every couple hours

Navy policy changes announced this week pertaining to linguists: 2+/2+ graduation standard out of DLI. (Might be DoD wide?) 110 DLAB minimum for CTI instead of 100. If you are sub-standard (under 2/2, for now) you can't test for advancement. FLPP pay will only pay for one primary language and one secondary (dialect). You won't get FLPP for languages outside of your mission scope. So if you grew up speaking Spanish or Turkish and were taught Arabic at DLI and put on an Arabic mission, you only get paid for Arabic. In the same example, if you switch to a Spanish mission you won't get paid for Arabic. Any secondary languages you're getting paid for must be from the same theater as your primary language. If you're getting FLPP for a language you grew up speaking and you don't do language mission or have a language NEC as your primary that money will go away in the next 18-24 months.

Had some big-wigs come through a few weeks ago and they said that 2+/2+ is for 2022 or some other distant-future poo poo. When I was at DLI that woulda been completely laughable, especially considering my class's pass rate, but that's far out enough that there might be some time to tweak this and push that and readjust that over there so they might have some excuse to call it feasible. And I thought people already didn't get paid for native languages without a mission purpose?
