I'm beginning to suspect that a lot of these 20 something super fans of the older show like to see themselves as Robin and don't like how Antagonistic and Robin like he is in GO. Granted some of them may also be angry about other things like mocking 10 year old RavenXBeast Boy shipping or don't enjoy some of the anti-lessons each of these episode focused jokes end on, but mainly Robin is TvTropes personified and they don't like how awful of a person he really is.

quote:

Family-Unfriendly Aesop: Many of the morals the show attempts to teach leave a lot to be desired.

-The various episodes that deal with intelligence such as "Books", "Knowledge", and "Head Fruit" all come off as anti-intellectual with their implication that knowledge or stimulating your brain in any way is bad and possibly fatal for your health.

-The episode "Lazy Sunday" has the moral that it's okay to be lazy and exercise is bad. Lampshaded by the Couch Spirit.
Couch Spirit: Just you listen to the Couch. Some folks may try to take away your laziness, but don't you let them. Never be too lazy to stand up and fight for your right... to be lazy.

-The various sports episodes like "Artful Dodgers", "Multiple Trick Pony", and
"Kicking a Ball and Pretending to Be Hurt", all send the message that there's nothing wrong with cheating or being a Sore Loser, and it can solve all problems.

-The infamous "Staring at the Future" has the moral that you should avoid responsibility at all costs, even if you have to ruin the lives of others in the process.

-The episode "Hot Garbage" carries the moral that it's okay to be filthy and you should never throw away garbage. Also, as mentioned below, it carries the Unfortunate Implications that it's okay to embrace hoarding, a serious psychological problem for many today.

-"Boys vs. Girls" has been riddled with criticism about sexism and gender inequality. The show has essentially stated upfront that girls are better than boys. The depiction of "cooties" being a real thing is also in poor taste.

-"Man Person" was particularly scorned for encouraging kids to inflict self-injury, by presenting body parts as being expendable, and making prospect limbs look cool and easy to attain.

-While "Smile Bones" technically gave the "correct lesson" at the very end: "chew your food", the immensely disturbing lengths it goes to in order to reach that point, pretty much render the lesson pointless. The episode features Beast Boy and Cyborg being even bigger assholes than usual, and starving their friends to the point where they become malnourished. All of the Titans are revealed to have false teeth. But most prominently of all, further signs of the writers engaging in substance abuse are revealed, when Beast Boy and Cyborg's bellies swell up to tremendous proportions, before sprouting arms and legs and taking on lives of their own. The bellies then engage in cannibalism and consume vast portions of the city, and after defeating the bellies they shrink down to normal size, with all the excess mass (from the buildings the bellies ate) disappearing into nowhere. The end result is they've pretty much scared kids into not eating food at all.

-Similarly to "Smile Bones" above, "Two Bumblebees and a Wasp" carries the correct lesson of not being consumed by greed, but the manner in which it delivers the lesson also wrecks the original intention. The episode has Robin taking his scrooge personality Up to Eleven and forces the Titans to worship money by refusing to pay them, with Beast Boy being the Only Sane Man who proposes "bee" money as a substitute. Later on the roles switch and a wealthy Beast Boy forces an impoverished Robin to dance for "bee" money in front of the other Titans. This comes off as a needlessly petty and very offensive Kick the Dog moment, especially for those who have ever been down on their luck and in need of help from others.

-The episode "Oil Drums" states that you should watch plenty of TV to keep your brain healthy or your mind will rot and you'll turn into a zombie obsessed with outdoor activities. Also doubles as a Critical Research Failure as it has been theorized that too much TV affects your mind.
The episode "Beast Man" has the moral that you should avoid being a hardworking, responsible adult or "The Man" will find you and force you to get a job.

I almost feel bad for TVtropers because TTG seems designed to drive them mad. If the show has any theme, it's too look at cliches, tropes and what fans fantasize about and want and to completely go against and downright mock those things. Sure most of these episodes make extremely clear that they are mocking things (Books for example makes it really clear how awkward and bad the lesson it's giving is and this is even reinforced later in the Young Justice episode) but to the type of spergs that love keeping track of tropes they're just getting annoyed that things aren't falling into place like they're supposed to and that they're being mocked for expecting that to happen.

Still, there's no excuse for "think of the children" type arguments. Not only does does a single person on TVtropes not actually give a poo poo about children when it's with something they like, children are also way smarter than them in picking up things being not serious and perhaps even "jokes".

The same types of children that threw fits when their parents wouldn't let them rent violent or sexuialized anime from Blockbuster grew up to be the prudes they thought were going to take away childhood when it was actually happening. A new generation of concerned adults have been born as they populate the jungles of Reddit, Twitter and TVTropes thinking anything they don't like is psychologically traumatizing kids.

Robin may be an egotistical Control Freak, but despite his negative actions, it's not hard to feel sorry for him (even those that hate him can feel sad for him). In "Dude Relax", it was revealed that the animals in his circus would often abuse him as a baby, which was the reason why he's always paranoid and uptight. His team would also treat him like a joke sometimes, to the point of them wanting him to be replaced with either another leader or one of their own numbers committing mutiny. It could be justified due to his obnoxious behavior, but many felt that this kind of treatment he gets from his teammates is just plain miserable.

Robin's failed attempts to win Starfire's affection can also be heartbreaking for some. While they did manage to become a couple in the original series, this incarnation clearly shows that Starfire has no romantic interest in Robin. She even stated in "Sandwich Thief" that she didn't love him, nor couldn't even learn to love him, and didn't tell him so as not to hurt his feelings. Heck, if it weren't for that lie detector, she would've purposely lied to him.

Batman Brave and the Bold was getting a lot of heat in its first season for many of the same reasons. Producers on TTG actually mentioned how they knew the fans were wrong because the stuff they were delivering with Batman was really close to what they wanted, even going as far as making a sequence that takes place in Comic Con to explain how the show truly is Batman and they would like it if they gave it a chance. For this show they decided to do the opposite in part because they got no chance of going under without the dumb nerd fanbase supporting them.

Basically, the last episode of Teen Titans had Beast Boy running into Terra, who is now living a normal life as a high school student and doesn't seem to know who Beast Boy is or wants anything to do with him. BB/Terra shippers flipped. I know of at least one guy who's written at least 5 fanfictions all about reversing that episode.

It was a pretty subdued, mediocre story that was intended to be more of an epilogue rather than a finale (since the big Final Battle episode happened the week before). The idea was to make both comic purists and weird Beast Boy/Terra fans happy. The episode gets tons of credit for how insane it drove both sides though.

You know, I'm not going to lie; I never really liked Young Justice all that much, even the first season. I've never watched a show about young superheroes that was just so maudlin, I think the operative word I would use would be 'joyless'. Not to say that I don't like some brooding in my spandex-beatdown shows (I love B:TAS all to bits), but Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (which was running at the same period of time) hit the mark much more cleanly for me despite being much more poorly animated and I guess technically being the worse show.

I feel like TT GO is pretty insulting, but that's only because the first episode I saw was the Return of Slade, where it pissed on all the fans of the original cartoon, basically saying that they only liked it through nostalgia. I liked the old show, not because it was cool and edgy, but because it was so cheesy, and it taught great lessons like "Racism is bad, yo" or "Brits are assholes." It did take itself seriously, but it still had a lot of comedy value, except in some of the later episodes like the whole Terra/Slade thing that happened. gently caress Terra though, never liked her or the episodes with her.

It just feels like it's a parody of itself, with all the character's bad points being overly exaggerated, Raven being /enamored/ with ponies (But it is funny when Control Freak does it, because he's a neckbeard), and the gags can just be so expected. "Let's get serious!" and then everyone starts being really silly is an example of that, but a good example of the comedy, in my opinion, is like when BB and Cyborg make a door to nowhere, that Robin goes through, falling out of the tower. That kind of stuff makes me want to watch the show more, but there's so many bad ones like the waffles episode.

It's funny how annoyed everyone gets at Waffles (in episode) and how much the villain, who can easily destroy the titans at that point, hates Waffles so bad he resorts to torture to shut them up and it still doesn't work. It's not until the other Titans embrace Waffles that BB and Cyborg start hating on the word.

Saying waffles over and over again isn't the funny, the funny is everyone's reaction to it, and the funny is the point of the episode because the funny is where the jokes come from.

Yeah, people always treat Waffles like it's monkey cheese humor episode but the humor from the episode is never focused on how wacky the word is but rather how much it annoys everyone around them, the many ways in which they manage to still interact and are misunderstood and the lengths they are willing to go to keep up the bit until the second the people they were trying to annoy embrace it. It's not about random humor, it's, like many TTG episodes, about the characters being dicks to an extreme degree.

Its kind of funny how tonally opposite DC and Marvel are right now in their material and franchises throughout the media as for every Avengers Mightiest Heroes, Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of Shield you have Beware the Batman, Batman Versus "DO YOU BLEED" Superman and Gotham: Rise of Villains. There are certain successes and failures across the board, but it feels like more often than not any levity from DC/WB's side these days comes by on accident or because not even they can grimdark poo poo like LEGO or GO's self mocking obsession to lampoon nerds that want everything super serious that they don't accept Brave and the Bold.

And maybe part of the problem is that currently WB at large can only do Batman right these days.

The cycle has been going on for as long as animation exists

Perv gets gig in animation thing > Perv decides to throw in a few kinky stuff and everyone just nods along because they are into it also > Children see this stuff and just take it for normal > Kids grow up and get into that stuff that started as innocent cartoon jokes > they join the animation industry and the cosmic ballet goes on

Young Justice was kind of weird because they tried to do serious and mix in a little comedy but they didn't mix well at all, and the comedy wasn't even very good, which just made things stand out worse. Like, I could go on a big rant about YJ's failed potential, but this isn't the thread for that. Anyway.

Return of Slade easily, just because putting aside the first couple of minutes as a great troll, the whole episode actually works as a kind of deep criticism of nostalgia in general. I mean, the clown can be taken as a metaphor most obviously for the original Teen Titans, but you can basically use it as a metaphor for any sort of children's entertainment. We want to remember old shows as loving amazing because everything was better when we were 12 when really they were just okay.

Oh, and Robin punches through a TV at the start of the episode to announce a crime alert. That's pretty great.
