Slightly different, but the worst example is the Pomplamoose (I know) cover of "Single Ladies" where she sings about refusing to sing the bridge because it's so beneath her.

Well, the Ryan Adams version of 1989 leaked, and it's actually pretty great. "Welcome to New York" and "Bad Blood" are now some of the better songs, and he changed the lyrics in "Style" to have a Sonic Youth reference instead of James Dean, which is pretty funny. "You've got that Daydream Nation look in your eye" is now the lyric.

Edit: The worst example of covers is almost always by Pomplamoose. Those two are among my least favorite characters on the internet. Feel like Christian Camp counselors.

The difference would be whether the joke is at the expense of the song or at the expense of him singing it; and not being familiar with his work I could not tell you which one it is.

He wasn't satirizing them, he inspired them. Like before that, it was what, Dynamite Hack covering Boyz-n-the-Hood, The Gourds cover of Gin n Juice, maybe a couple others floating around Kazaa (all attributed to Dynamite Hack)?

I mean, it's probably unfair to put the blame entirely on Ben Folds though; acoustic covers of that form becoming popular had less to do with a single influence and more to do with the fact that Youtube launched the same year and made it much easier to host and share user-created videos.

My least favourite off the top of my head is Coldplay covering "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" as a tribute to Adam Yauch. Fair enough that they were doing a tribute to a departed musician, but that song's basically a parody of big stupid hair metal party anthems already, but Coldplay must be the least rocking, least partying band that's popular today.

I'm pretty sure they're only classified as "rock" because they have a guitarist. It's like the time Billboard had a headline on their website proclaiming "ROCK RULES THE ALBUM CHART" and it was Mumford & Sons. :v:

Or, in one of my personal irrationally irritating moments, when I was listening to the radio (BBC Radio 2? I think it was Radio 2) and someone phoned in with a message boasting about how the previous night they'd been "rocking out to Train".

Train.

It does seem like Emotion didn't get as much promotion as it should have, every track is amazing and it's definitely my favourite album of the last few years. The Run Away With Me video is just so :3:

Ryan Adams' 1989 is so loving good so far :swoon: I'm a big fan of the original but these alternate takes on those songs are great too. Style was probably my favorite song on the original, and here it's repurposed beautifully. Sounds like it wouldn't be out of place at all on the radio in the 80s.

I mean, it's a cool idea and all (take an 80's pop inspired album and flip it so it sounds like 80's rock), but it's pretty underwhelming. I listened to Shake It Off waiting for it to be interesting, and it never happened. Style sounded way worse. Welcome to New York was the best of the three, but even then it sounded like a dude taking Taylor Swift songs and putting a Bruce Springsteen filter on them, but it wasn't as interesting as either of those two artists.

and speaking of Kesha, apparently the lawsuit she filed against Dr. Luke has basically put her career at the mercy of the courts! They have a (former) record exec from a different label saying none of the other major labels are going to touch her while she's the focus of this, and she's signed to a Sony imprint run by, surprise surprise, Dr. Luke, so she's basically not doing anything, which is a death toll for an artist these days. Her team is trying to expedite the case so she can get back to recording, hopefully away from assholes like DL.

Also, Sony is being super lovely, as is their wont. Here they are, basically saying "well we can't be blamed for one of our employees (her boss) harassing her mentally, physically, and sexually and forcing her to keep quiet; She didn't tell us!"

quote:

She cannot claim that Gottwald [Dr. Luke] intimidated her into silence, then — as an apparent afterthought — seek to hold Sony and Kemosabe Records liable for failing to act on conduct that she did not report.

I guess they must have made some bank on Skyfall getting the radio play that it did, because Sam Smith on a Bond theme could not be a worse fit. It also fits the broader "trend":

Skyfall- Good theme
Quantum of Solace- Bad theme
Casino Royale- Good theme
Die Another Day- Bad theme
World is Not Enough- Good theme
Tomorrow Never Dies- Subpar theme (mostly just lovely by comparison to k.d. lang's theme)
GoldenEye- Good theme

Fuckin called it

EDIT: Writing's On The Wall wants to be Skyfall so bad it's pathetic. It's the deflating balloon version of Skyfall. Just a dreadful choice. I mean, Sam Smith probably turns in the best Bond theme he possibly could, but gently caress, what a transparently commercial call. I wonder if this wasn't a last minute thing too, what with the Ellie Goulding teasing. Could be Tomorrow Never Dies all over again.

I like all the Connery ones. I like the instrumental theme for On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I like most of the Moore ones (I don't like "For Your Eyes Only" or "All Time High" and I'm take it or leave it on "Moonraker" - "The Man With the Golden Gun" is a hilarious song) and he has the best single Bond theme there's been ("Nobody Does It Better"). I like both of the Dalton ones. I'm half and half on the Brosnan ones (I like "GoldenEye" and "The World Is Not Enough" and don't really like "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "Die Another Day").

Honestly, none of the Craig ones have really stood out to me so far other than "Skyfall".

I'm not blown away by Writing's On The Wall either. The orchestration is sufficiently Bond-like, and during the first verse it sounds as if it might go SOMEWHERE, but it doesn't. The chorus is just limp. Perhaps it will grow on me. Skyfall did as well, but at least that one had a chorus that stuck with me right away. Also, I'm not a fan of Sam Smith in the first place, so that might have coloured my perception.

An issue that might be bigger than it seems is that the song is 5 minutes long, and the movie cut will be under 3. Skyfall is a much tighter song in the movie cut; but there's only so much that can fix.

Pitchfork review of Ryan Adam's 1989 posted:

Ryan Adams' cover of Taylor Swift's 1989 is a lot of fun to think about and talk about, but not much fun to listen to. It is, in other words, a pure product of the Internet—a robust, cross-platform, thinkpiece-generating app that testifies mostly to Adams' ability to get attention. You have to hand it to him for knowing what he's doing: His album choice churns up some nice, irony-rich soil for culture and music critics to wriggle around in. Even though Taylor Swift has been a songwriter first and foremost throughout her career, 1989 was where she collaborated more intensely with superstar producers like Max Martin and Shellback to help her cross over from Queen of Pop Country to the center of the pop world proper. The move worked spectacularly: 1989 is among the best-selling albums of the post-Napster era. And now Ryan Adams has transformed it again, into... a run-of-the-mill Ryan Adams album.

Pretty much.
