So I've read the last few pages of this thread based on a couple replies in the laptop thread, so I thought I'd ask a few questions about Win 10. Please forgive me if I am re-hashing things which have been previously discussed, but I just want to make sure I have my thick head wrapped around some pros/cons of Win 10. I am looking at buying a powerful laptop for gaming. It'll be used for when I am out of town an staying in hotels as It'll keep me out of trouble. I have it pretty much narrowed down to 1 of 2 units, but the one I am leaning towards has Win 10 Home built in from the factory. The other has 8.1. I am coming from a Win 7 Pro background. 1: With win 10 Home, I understand that it pushes updates to you. Is there a way to turn this off without some 3rd party utility or is that the only way? Some hotels I stay at have 500MB data caps and after that you get charged. 500MB is plenty for what I'd need, but obviously if it's bringing in some big update in the background that won't help matters. Is this something MS is changing in the upcoming SP? 2: Update related as well, how does it work with optional updates like drivers? IE: If my laptop has an Nvidia driver that I am happy with, will it force in some Windows approved driver even if I don't want it? 3: If someone isn't in the fast track release stream, is there any real downsides to having Win 10 at this point in time? As I mentioned I come from a Win 7 Pro background and have not really played with 8.1 to any extent other than setting up a mom-PC for Christmas, and I didn't really care for it much... but I could probably live with it. I do have an old P.O.S. AMD N660 laptop which I did go through the Win 10 upgrade process and I kind of like it so far, but that whole push update thing is really the biggest problem I have with it but I haven't really dug that much into it yet.

For WiFi connections, Win10 lets you set a connection as metered through Network & Internet > WiFi > Advanced Options. My understanding is that wireless connection flagged as metered only downloads priority updates, but since they most definitely don't give you the toggle switch option with Ethernet (at least that I can find), I have to take Microsoft's word for it.

Biggest complaint so far? Auto-updates and restarting. Heck, I don't mind if it auto-downloads them, just don't restart my PC. I'll know this via mobile if I can't access DropBox, Plex or torrents are seen as a Hit n Run. Good? I'm not sure if this is a Win10 thing, but having 3 monitors, I could only see video using Media Player Classic on my main monitor. Here, I can move it to another monitor and it'll play fine. Anyone have any convincing arguments to keep the default start menu or use Microsoft Apps? I like being able to split my screens up multiple ways, so their app store doesn't seem very friendly to that, as didn't 8/8.1. Otherwise, my Start 10 trial is working quite fine for now. So using Chrome on Windows 10 I seem to get an issue where after a while the Shockwave Flash plugin stops responding and will refuse to work until I reboot the entire computer, not just the browser or plugin. Any thoughts?

I've got one of my photos that I want to set as my desktop background. I've converted it to srgb in Photoshop and saved it as a jpeg, but when set as the wallpaper, it appears washed out as if it was a non-srgb color space being shown in a non color managed app. Am I missing something here? I haven't noticed it happening on any photos saved and displayed this way on previous Windows versions. The file details state 'Color Representation - sRGB'.

Windows will sometimes convert a higher quality jpeg into a lower quality one when you set it as the desktop background. One thing to try is to save a copy of the image that exactly fits your desktop dimensions, and set that as the wallpaper. What I more often see is images I saved at 98% appearing with more artifacts when set as the background.

Yeah, I always re-size to 1920 x 1080 for wallpapers. After more experimenting, the same image saved as a png looks fine when set as the background from either a right-click or through the Photos app, but wrong when set through Windows Photo Viewer. As stupid as that is, I thought I'd at least found the problem, but the jpg still looks wrong no matter how it's set. gently caress knows

In "even terrible things should work as advertised" terms, Flash for Chrome doesn't work like Flash for other browsers does, because Chromium made their own plugin interface (Pepper) to replace NPAPI and then Google and Adobe worked out ways to break out of the API just for Flash, which is all kind of adorable as no one else makes Pepper plugins anyway. In practical terms, Flash for Chrome probably just didn't close out right when Chrome did. I don't think it actually gets a process labeled Flash in any way, so actually exit Chrome (hamburger > Exit or Ctrl+Shift+Q), wait a few seconds, and then kill any remaining Chrome tasks maybe. Also are you sure you actually closed Chrome the last few times this has happened?, because if you have background apps for it it keeps running even with no windows open.

I've never had this problem before in Windows 7 or 8, seems to be 10 specific. Auto 'lowering' my mic volume, specifically so that it's pretty much muted. I can usually get around it by going into the mic settings in windows, cranking it back up to 90 and it will stay there As soon as I reboot, it auto lowers it back to 50 or something stupid I just tried to play the new Rainbow Six Siege alpha and same thing, it was stuck at 50 (which ends up sounding like I'm screaming from the next room over apparently) I figure something is hosed up anyways, whenever I click on the recording options I get the 'this device audio enhancements are jacked up' etc, it does that for every sound device on my system after each reboot

I am not exactly sure why, but Edge performs way better for hitbox.tv videos in fullscreen mode than any of Opera, Chrome, or Firefox; only Edge shows the videos for me at the nominal framerate- the others are too frame-y and a chore to watch for more than a few seconds. This is on a Dell laptop with i5 2520M @2.5Ghz and an Intel HD 3000 series GPU.

Chrome still disables GPU rasterization categorically, not because Google thinks there's anything wrong with it anymore, but because  . You can switch it on manually in chrome://flags.You can also switch it back off that way if if it turns out anything is wrong with it.

I held off a while with my 7 machine, but my work machine was recently updated to 8.1. I quite liked some of the changes, so went for the upgrade to 10 at home. It was painless. A lot more time was spent tidying up my OS drive before making a backup image of it using the built-in Windows tools.

Yeah, it's been working "OK" for my old mom-style Emachine laptop, but I think I'll take the advice of most here and stick with 8.1 until at least the major update comes down the pipe.

Has anyone else found it literally impossible to disable Insider builds? You click the button that says "Stop Insider Builds," it pops up a window that says "We need you to do a few things to stop receiving builds," then links you to a support article about clicking the same drat button you just clicked. Who the gently caress made this OS?
