New FJM video, this time for The Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY37fixfN_A

And a very Tillman-y quote to go along with it:

quote:

This video is partially inspired by the LeBron James quote "It is precisely the superficial differences between people who are otherwise alike that inform the hostilities between them"

Special thanks to my body double Tyler who I had to kiss no fewer than two dozen times and whose breath I can still smell in my mind’s eye.

Also, a semi-related question for the thread. Is there anyone that does better stage banter than Misty? Seeing him live is almost like a concert with short stand-up segments between songs.

I'm seeing them in the middle of October, but I wasn't really thrilled by the new album. Granted, I only listened to it all the way through once. I mean, it was fine, but none of the songs really leapt out at me.

Anyone else check out Metric's new album? I finished listening to it today for the first time and so far I'm digging it. Cool how they're able to keep it fairly fresh for so long. As much I love the synth pop sound they've developed since Fantasies, I'm excited for their next album where they say they're going for more analog instruments.

That track Cascades reminds me of Freezepop, who I haven't listened to in forever.

Good album so far, I'm sure it'll grow on me more and more after a few listens.

i've been a Metric fan since the Old World Underground days and i find the new one pretty lackluster. I really like a handful of songs, The Shade, Cascades, and a some others but overall seems not great. For context i thought their last album Synthetica was was really good. Maybe i'll come around to it tho. I too am very interested to hear their next album which they say is completed and is mostly analog acoustic instrumentation.

Yeah, I'm not liking it as much as Synthetica, but given how much I loved Synthetica, that isn't too surprising. Hopefully it'll grow on me, though.

I'm about halfway through at the moment, and I'm really digging it so far.

I don't imagine the "same-y" criticism will go away, but you hear things like the almost industrial thing happening in "Keep You On My Side" and at least believe something radical is nowhere near out of the question down the line.

The big problem is that the songs are too drat short!! They introduce a loop, immediately jump into full orchestration, and then end the track right as you start to feel it. When you primarily work with loops you need to give your music time to breathe. All of the best Battles tracks are the ones that are like 7+ minutes long, and here almost everything is between 3 and 5.

I listened to the new Chvrches album on the way home today. The singles released so far and a few others I am really digging (including Martins), but the back end of the album feels pretty forgettable. Bones of What You believe was front to back amazing for me, so I will have to probably go through this a few more times to really get a feel for it. Seeing them again early on next month and still pretty excited regardless.

Their live instrument light thing is cool. It's pretty much exact covers with some minor dj tweaking of the album songs but the singer has a lot of interesting costumes. If you love the music (I do) you will love the show. If you were looking to be entertained probably not so much.

Some tour guitarist. They are decent live, they make it sound a lot more raw and the synth based tracks turn guitar based live.

Interested to hear how that is. I'm seeing them Tuesday in Central Park. I don't really feel like I'm missing out by not seeing them in a smaller venue; they kinda seem like outdoor festival-ish music.

This is a cool day for new releases. The new Disclosure album is so good! None of the songs stand out to the degree that the singles on Settle did, mainly because this album is generally slower and lower-key, but there's still some gems in here. The Miguel track in particular is fantastic. I'm actually kind of glad I was underwhelmed by the singles on this record and didn't get my hopes up too much, ended up pleasantly surprised by it. I hope their next record is a bit more uptempo, but this is gonna be some nice Fall/Winter chill music.

Also, the new New Order record is shockingly good. It's a bit too long (every track could shave a minute or two and nothing would be lost; these aren't exactly the 12" singles they used to make), but worth a few listens.

New Chvrches owns and I've listened to it 3x today. I'm a huge fan though.

Seeing the Decemberists on Monday with a friend and it will be her first time and my second then next Friday is Joywave.

My concert line up for fall has been amazing:

Best Coast - Sept 16
Beach House- Sept 18
Decemberists - Sept 28

Joywave - Oct 3 - Indy
Jose Gonzalez - Oct 5
Father John Misty - Oct 8
`Quiet Hollers - Oct 17

Sufjan (front row humble brag) - Nov 12
`Houndmouth Nov 21

But yea I won't be seeing Beach House again unless it is a seated venue.

Their new material was really fun live. Admittedly, I'm a big fan. Lauren has some really charming stage banter, so I feel like a big outdoor show would swallow up her occasional between song chats. Looking forward to next week's Summerstage show, regardless.

Rough Trade hosted a signing earlier this afternoon, so I got the new album and the Recover EP signed by the band. They're such a nice bunch of people.

Guys, the new New Order album is fantastic. I'm a diehard fan, and even I will admit they've been kind of crap since 2001 (I like Republic, sue me). This makes me so, so happy. I'm sorry it had to come at the cost of losing Hooky, but they've proven they can move on.

Oh yeah, I saw Disclosure there in 2013* (and Mastodon there in May, and Young Thug last week) and it's the best. Like a mini-music-festival without all of the awful parts, and actually a lot smaller than most outdoor theaters (around ~5000 capacity?). Plus because it's in Central Park all the shows end at like 10 which is way more reasonable than most.

Glad to hear CHVRCHES' new stuff sounds good live; I reckon I should listen to their album sometime this weekend. Was a bit turned off hearing that it was more of the same, but I do like their first singles well enough that I figured I'd give them a shot live.

* btw that Disclosure show is in the top 5 concerts I've ever seen, and had the RIDICULOUS lineup of Julio Bashmore and TNGHT opening, plus Sam Smith and Jessie Ware aahhh
