The problem about vaxers and truthers using Google is that they get exactly the answer they're looking for at the top. We all get different Google results based on our preferences and prior history, so Google is basically tailored to your confirmation bias.

Google's testing revised page rankings that prioritize factually correct information. It'll be interesting to see what that ends up looking like and what effect it has.

Possibly a mixture of both but probably the latter. My dad used be very computer smart and used to do the whole http thing until recently when I pointed it out that he didn't need to. Computer illiterate people I work with do the type google.com and search for https://www.facebook.com thing all the drat time

These days I just mash the keyboard with something close to what I am looking for and almost all the time Google figures out what I mean. Also, this is like the fifthNike I Have seen someone mention bing being used only for porn. What's the deal with that?

Free public libraries and for-profit bookstores lived quite successfully together for well over a hundred years; the decline of bookstores JUST HAPPENED to dovetail with cheap online booksellers and the rising popularity of e-books. Funny coincidence, that is.

Because they're seeing less patrons, and townships and cities are using that as an excuse to cut funding. So yes, they are dying in part because the ubiquity of information thanks to technology has indirectly impacted their operating budgets.

If 1/4 the number of people come into the library per week, is it worth the money and space to keep it running? What about 1/10? 1/100? Libraries are swiftly becoming obsolete for a lot of their original purposes. Which is a huge shame for the small percentage of the population who DO still use them for their original purposes.

I would be interested in really finding out if bookstore are really suffering that badly or the case of Borders failing due largely because of corporate competence creating a bit of a misunderstood case. Mainly because here in Australia, the other main bookstore chain Dymocks has continued to be quite successful and even your local corner bookshops still seem to be largely operating fine.

It is a source of information in generals, whether that be from old books, Internet access, music, newspapers, microforms or any other format. Sure, anything digital can be accessed from home, but the library also exists as an important source of information and help for those who cannot or will not use the Internet. Old people in particular need help with that sort of thing, especially when basically all communication with public services happen online. Librarians are the custodians of knowledge, and will continue to be important for any kind of information query that cannot be summed up as a simple phrase for a search engine. I did a project on the subject a little while back on a course I took, and it's a subject that's very dear to me, since I spent a huge part of my childhood in the library and with my face buried in books.

Sadly, there's gently caress-all and shrinking funding for UK libraries so we're losing them left right and centre

I think libraries should buy redbox style machines for libraries to rent out DVDs, the uptake in library cards would be huge, and what convenience store wouldn't want a free movie rental machine out front drawing people in? Our library also has 3D printers, ebooks/Audiobooks you can download, etc. the library owns.
