the one we live in now
As things often are in the poor sections of a city, the tenements and businesses are made hastily but never prudently, and the Qain Quarter is no exception. Almost every building in the quarter is made out of wood and thatch and cloth and leather, assembled quickly and cheaply so that people have roofs over their heads (and little else). And, as it often happens in these conditions, even the tiniest of sparks can find their footing and reach maturity as a full-grown blaze.

So it went that, in the middle of the night, an alarm was raised. "Fire, fire!" a voice shouted. But the shouting was not necessary, as the entire quarter felt the pangs of heat hitting their faces. Many of their own homes were engulfed by the flames. The residents needed to decide then and there - would they work together to fight the fire? Or would they save themselves and seek shelter?

CONFLAGRATION MINI GAME

All players in the game should PM me with a choice: do you stay and ##fight the flames, or do you ##flight away from here as quickly as you can? Your choice is not a solitary one: if too many people flee, the Quarter will burn and many will fail to escape, but to fight the flames is to put yourself in harm's way and surely die yourself.

What do you do?

EccoRaven

there is only one hell:

It all happened so fast. The fires began, and there was immediately a panic. A few of the residents tried to form a bucket chain from the river to the center of the conflagration, but there were just too few - the majority of the residents chose to run away, get as far from the flame as they could. The ones who stayed behind were soon consumed, their bravery costing them their lives.

:s: The Ninth Layer, Nakhte, Mage (town-aligned doctor), died fighting the fire. :s:
:s: Kashuno, Kezra, Innocent (town-aligned vanilla), died fighting the fire. :s:

And yet, the ones who ran found they had nowhere to go. The flames spread so quickly that soon most of the Qain Quarter was engulfed in heat. If only more had stayed behind to fight the fire, maybe they would have had a chance... but alas.

:s: Pinterest Mom, Agathos, Innocent (town-aligned vanilla), was burned alive. :s:

The only place of sanctuary was Power of Pecota's house, which had around it a small gully of water that magically appeared there during the night. Pecota was just as surprised. He was in the middle of packing his bags and fleeing the quarter when LJ banged on his door, pleading to let her in. Pecota smiled and readied his dagger...

:s: ljtrigirl, Lamia, Beggar (town-aligned mirror), was stabbed to death (endgamed). :s:

Half an hour after the fire had started, it died. It had destroyed most of the quarter indiscriminately and violently, but as soon as it started to bleed into the rest of the city, the fire brigade went into action and contained it, letting it consume its fuel and die peacefully after a long, happy life. The next morning city officials and firefighters went through the wreck and still-glowing embers for any signs of survivors. As far as they could tell, everyone in the quarter must have perished in that charnel in Charnaz - including the Fiery Valkyrie and her two convict companions, whoever they were. "Good riddance," said the city constable. The search was called off, and the quarter was cleared. Within a year new tenements were built on the ruins of the old, and more of the city's backwash fell into the slum, never knowing the misery buried beneath them.

A month later, two cloaked figured boarded a boat in Iskana, a spindly hunk of muscle and a tall, powerful woman with dark red hair. They paid in cash, and paid extra for private rooms. They were headed to the Republic of Savomary, they said, travelers seeking to escape the chaos of the desert for somewhere peaceful. Once they entered their cabin, they removed their cloaks and breathed a sigh of relief. Freedom never felt so good.

BottleKnight, Amenia Fay, Fire (mafia-aligned arsonist); and
Power of Pecota, Paia, Water (mafia-aligned assassin), have satisfied their win condition and won the game!

============

Role PMs:

BottleKnight - Amenia Fay - Fire (mafia-aligned arsonist)
You have absolute command over flame and flare. You were raised on a merchant caravan, traveling from city to city but spending most of your time in the scorching desert under the dictatorship of the sun. You saw how the heat can not only destroy life, but command it - the weak hide in the shadows, but the strong learn to adapt, or even to use the heat to their advantage. You wanted some of that power for yourself. You started off learning small spells, lighting candles with a snap or summoning sparks from your fingertips - parlor tricks, really, things to entertain passersby when busking - but soon your magical prowess exceeded even your own expectations. By your first bleeding you were creating fireballs from your hands, and at fourteen you summoned an inferno from thin air.
When you were sixteen you set your entire wagon train on fire, killing dozens and injuring many more. An Arrentish magistrate didn't care that it was an accident and sentenced you to life in a dark, cold dungeon deep in the mountains, chained to a wall and fed only gruel. You received sixty lashings when you escaped the first time, and two-hundred and sixty the second time. But you have a good feeling about this third time.

You are a mafioso! You are an escaped prisoner seeking sanctuary from the authorities by murdering everyone in this quarter who would rat you out, and as such, win when you have unassailable dominance over the public execution, or nothing can stop the same. Your team consists of: BottleKnight (Amenia Fay), Power of Pecota (Paia), and Asiina (Acenith). The three of you are confirmed to share the same alignment, can communicate freely OOT throughout the game, have a collective nightkill, and can post and vote normally in the thread.
You specifically are a skilled master of all things fire. During the night you may place a special sigil on a player's home, unnoticeable to the unmagickal eye, but which marks the resident's soul for death (treat this action as ##DOUSE). The sigil cannot be removed. On any subsequent night you may, once per game, ##ACTIVATE all the sigils you have placed, setting their homes (and the player inside them) on fire. This kills the player.
Note that you may not ##activate the sigils the same night your team performs a nightkill (too dangerous, you might get caught in the blaze or something).
You are an arsonist and you are mafia-aligned.

NOTE: since Amenia is named in the opening flavor, if you are ever asked to flavor claim, the name "Birketos" is a good choice instead.

Power of Pecota - Paia - Water (mafia-aligned assassin)
You grew up by the sea, watching ships come and go through the docks, dreaming of what life must be like outside of the endless stretches and stone and sand. When you became a young man you stepped onto a boat and acted as a powder monkey for the ship's Kermish cannonades. You did your work well and rose through the ranks, and eventually, after many years, you became First Mate on an Arrentish clipper. One well-timed mutiny later, you were captain of your own vessel. You took down the Arrentish flags and raised the black flag of piracy and began raiding the lucrative shipping routes between Charnaz and Savomary. You were first sent to prison six years ago when your ship got ambushed and your crew turned on you. They locked you in a cell deep in the desert, further from the ocean than you have ever been. It was intolerable. So when you and two of your friends managed to escape, you decided you weren't going back there. You would rather die fighting.

The three of you are confirmed to share the same alignment, can communicate freely OOT throughout the game, have a collective nightkill, and can post and vote normally in the thread.
You specifically are a vicious pirate! You know just where to stab someone to make them bleed, suffer, and die, in ways that only the best Arrentish healers can save (certainly not some backwater potion-mixer like in Ip'dju). If selected to perform the nightkill, players you target cannot be protected by doctors. Your kill can still be blocked by other means, though.
You are an assassin and you are mafia-aligned.

Asiina - Acenith - Earth (mafia-aligned goon)
You were caught stealing a loaf of bread and a pail of salted goat to feed your family. Your brother was sick, your mother dead, and your father maimed in an accident years ago, barely able to move. You were your family's only hope. But, as the magistrate rightly concluded, stealing is wrong - you were quickly caught, tried, and sentenced to ten years in a dungeon outside of town. You managed to escape with two of your fellow prisoners, and you led them to Ip'dju, to your old neighborhood. Now the three of you need to hide out here until the heat dies down, silencing whoever tries to rat you out in the process.

The three of you are confirmed to share the same alignment, can communicate freely OOT throughout the game, have a collective nightkill, and can post and vote normally in the thread.
You have no other exceptional powers or abilities.
You are a goon and you are mafia-aligned.

The Ninth Layer - Nakhte - Mage (town-aligned doctor)
Your parents died of malnutrition when you were very young, so you were sent to live with your grandfather in Ip'dju. He was a master of the old ways; he didn't believe in magickal spells or tricksy hocus pocus, he believed true power came from tapping into the primal elements and harnessing their strength for your own use. He specialized in water, and so you did, too. He took you by the river (even after it became more of a stagnant pond) and taught you how to lift water through your fingertips, how to channel it through streams and torrents, and most enlightening of all, how to wrap someone's wounds in water to heal them. Your grandfather is now long dead, but you still remember his teachings well. Now that your whole neighborhood might go up in flames fighting escaped criminals, you realize now more than ever what you must do...
You are a townie! You seek to protect your neighborhood from violent criminals, and as such, win when all scum players are eliminated. You have the normal powers of posting and voting in the thread.
Additionally, you are a master of the water elements; during the night you may summon water from the nearby river and, after properly enchanting it, turn it into a powerful healing salve. You may then shoot it into someone's home and wrap it around their wounds, healing them.
You are a doctor and you are town-aligned

a worthy uhh - Tagaret - Healer (town-aligned doctor)
You were one of the lucky ones. You were raised in the Qain Quarter like everyone else, living miserably in abject destitution. But you managed to escape. You got a job with a merchant on the other side of town managing his wares and keeping his floors clean. Eventually you made enough money to send yourself to school, where you miraculously excelled - history and magicks were your specialty. With the lucky patronage of a Kermish duchess, you went to the Academy in Dromay, specializing in white magicks (healing and wards against evil). But now that you've graduated, you decided to take the biggest risk of your life - you returned home, using your skills to care for your former neighbors, friends, and rivals, to let them know that someone believes in them when nobody else does, and that there is always hope for a better life out there, somewhere.
You are a townie! You seek to protect your neighborhood from violent criminals, and as such, win when all scum players are eliminated. You have the normal powers of posting and voting in the thread.
You are also a skilled master of white magicks. During the night you may target a player in the game and cast a protection spell over their home, keeping them safe from harm.
You are a doctor and you are town-aligned

Grandicap - Gabriel - Cutpurse (town-aligned tracker)
If someone doesn't know something is missing, can it really be said to be gone? That is the mantra of the cutpurse. You have spent your life snatching bags of gold, bits of food, and the occasional dagger or pair of shoes, and have not yet gotten caught. It's a hard life but in the Qain Quarter it's what you gotta do to get by. Still, even though you're a thief, you would never actually hurt anybody. Now that actual, vicious criminals are in your neighborhood, you need to do what you can to get life back to normal.
You are a townie! You seek to protect your neighborhood from violent criminals, and as such, win when all scum players are eliminated. You have the normal powers of posting and voting in the thread.
You are also a skilled pickpocket, able to follow marks for hours without being noticed. During the night you may target a player in the game and see where they go.
You are a tracker and you are town-aligned.

ljtrigirl - Lamia - Beggar (town-aligned mirror)
Part of sitting on a streetcorner begging for scraps and change every day is learning how to read people. You know how people work, who is likely to give you something, and what you have to say to get it from them. After all, your very life depends on it. In fact, you're way more clever than people give you any credit for. You've done all sorts of work whenever you noticed an opportunity to scrape by another day, which has given you a wide range of skills, which you can then flip for more food and change. It's hard, but, at least it's a living. You'd never even consider hurting someone, though. With your neighborhood threatened by murderers, you need to use your range of skills to bring them down.
You are a townie! You seek to protect your neighborhood from violent criminals, and as such, win when all scum players are eliminated. You have the normal powers of posting and voting in the thread.
You are a beggar, a busker, and an odd-jobsman. You are able to learn many skills quickly and efficiently, if only given the opportunity. During the night you will be told what powers are targeted on you, if any. On subsequent nights you may then perform that exact power on someone else as many times as you like. Should you acquire multiple powers, you may only use one a night.
You are a mirror and you are town-aligned.

merk - Alam Mertunjid - Wizard (town-aligned JOAT)
I'm gonna be straight with you, merk. I made a JOAT role and I had no idea what flavor to give it. I decided to go with wizard, because "a wizard did it" is always a good answer for any flavor question. So congrats you are the first straight-up wizard in Ecco Fantasy Series games. Put on your robe and hat and prepare to use your magicks to stop evildoers and bring them to justice.
You are a townie! You seek to protect your neighborhood from violent criminals, and as such, win when all scum players are eliminated. You have the normal powers of posting and voting in the thread.
You are also a wizard with an assortment of powers, that you may only use once per game! Your powers are:
- an ENTANGLING spell which wraps around a player, trapping them in their beds for the night (ROLEBLOCK);
- a spell of PAST KNOWLEDGE, which gives you a list of every player who targeted your target all game, however the player must be still alive in order for it to work (FORENSIC INVESTIGATION);
- a spell to connect your mind with the mind of another, allowing the two of you to communicate just by your own thought (MASON RECRUITMENT);
- a SCRYING spell which reveals a player's identity to you as if reading from a book (ROLECOP)
Each of these may only be used once, remember, and of course only one per night.
You are a JOAT and you are town-aligned.

Life in the Qain Quarter is not easy. Your home is shoved into the middle of an urban wasteland at the bottom of a hill where the waste and refuge of Ip'dju flows. The city's black market is nearby, and with it the crime and vicious gangs that always follow. Still, you appreciate what you have, and you have been able to make a life for yourself however you could. You even, at moments, feel a sense of community - a sense that, you are all in this together, so you need to work together to be happy. But now, violent escaped convicts threaten all of that, including your very life. Now you need to figure out who to trust and work together to make your crappy life a little less crappier.
You are a townie! You seek to protect your neighborhood from violent criminals, and as such, win when all scum players are eliminated. You have the normal powers of posting and voting in the thread.
You have no other exceptional powers or abilities.
You are vanilla and you are town-aligned.

the one we live in now
NOTES:

- I made the setup wanting to incorporate maps into my games in the future. Specifically the map ties into the conflagration minigame (adapted from one I had in a previous France game).
--- I gave the town two doctors (with a third lying dormant as the highest-postcount vanilla townie, and a potential fourth in LJ had she ever been targeted) in order to limit the spread of the fire during the conflagration.
--- Likewise, had a majority of the town voted to ##fight the fire, the damage would have been much less severe (perhaps even winnable had the coins flipped right). But alas PMom was the clutch vote and he decided to run, dooming you all for certain.
--- It is theoretically possible for the fire to kill all the scum save for the arsonist, too! Such is the nature of fire. PoP would have died, e.g., had Ninth not protected him the night of the fire :D

- The town was really not doing too hot this game (no pun intended). Gosh, you guys were being really-low effort overall, and it really showed. Sorry but we all have off games it's cool.

- Congrats to the scum for the win.

- Thanks to you all for humoring me with an experimental mechanic! I am planning on all my future games incorporating a map in some way; it may or may not be relevant to the game, who knows, :iiam:.

Anyway bye!

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!

Tmm you were seriously on point D1, you were the NK because you had BK and Asiina nailed. I'm surprised I didn't get called out for my vote on you, that was totally me getting nervous and wanting the day to end sooner.

My casing was rusty as poo poo and I sucked at coming to any conclusions, peppering in a bunch of questions saved me I guess. I was kinda amazed vines had me as a top town pick (imo pmom was basically confirmed town after Asiina flipped)

I have more I want to say when I'm not on a phone

I kind of thought your vote on me was hinky, but SSV bothered me more.

BK I knew was garbage, especially when he just kept it there as a meta read. I'm actually surprised people didn't push him more about it. But the random town sticking on Asiina really threw everything for a loop. I was positive it was ANarc, Asiina and SSV on N1, although bowmore actually made me doubt that ANarc was scum there and had me considering TNL.

And btw, I was being a bit of an rear end on D1 on purpose to draw reactions. I was vanilla town and I had to amuse myself. :) If I had lived, I would have tried to not be so pushy, although it probably would have been hard with the D1 MiR lynch. I definitely would have eased up if town had lynched Asiina on D1.
