Most modern cars are designed to try and shed the engine in a crash since it's heavy and you want the minimum possible kinetic energy to dissipate. In mid engine cars that mostly means having the whole rear end being more or less breakaway from the passenger compartment and direct it to the side, so you don't have the engine using the passenger cell as a crumple zone in a head-on crash.
