The only difference between 50 and 100 other NY dudes is he got picked up by Dre. Also cherry picking some lyrics is kinda lame, I mean I can pull out poo poo that's just as dumb (or imo way dumber) from 50 so it's w/e. I mean does anyone even know any words to Magic Stick or In Da Club outside of the chorus?

Again, 50 had huge buzz before Dre but he really blew up once he got the proper backing. And be my guest to cherry pick any lyric from any 50 album you want and i'll put it against that entire Drake/Future tape with no problems. You seriously only know the lyrics to TWO 50 songs? Did you live under a rock in the 00's? Have you never honestly heard of Many Men or 21 Questions or P.I.M.P? You are tying to make a point here but it's a real bad one if you are trying to say no one knows 50 songs, speak for yourself if that is the case.

alansmithee posted:

And I never said it was up to their abilities. The whole point was to just put out some fun music and get some press. Fwiw I think Drake sucks rear end so I don't think that's any worse than what he can do, and Future's solid but it sure as hell wasn't 56 nights. My whole point is that you talked about 50's ability to keep throwing out junk by him and his flunkies like it was a positive, but rag on Future and Drake for doing essentially the same thing.

Fun and good don't have to be mutually exclusive, what is so hard to understand about that? And what 50 made, even when it was junk was much more well thought out and put together than anything this collab tried to accomplish. They put two big names together and put out a sub par product and you guys ate it up anyway. They can construct an absolute basic non sensical hook and repeat it for a full two minutes straight and that's alright with you guys and passable? I guess standards are really lower for rap right now.

alansmithee posted:

And if you say rap hasn't always been super simple stuff, I say when hasn't it been? I mean even in the early 90's "golden age" you had Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Tag Team, etc charting. And my point was that Hopsin's a bitter rear end dude trying to get press by going after a subsection of what's popular that doesn't fit into what he's trying to do. All the stuff about "no words" and whatever, he's trying to say popular poo poo is all the same simple music while ignoring counter-examples. And he's also doing this while ignoring the fact that popular rap that wasn't simple, hook and beat driven stuff is the exception, not the norm. He's trying to say that people don't respect lyrics or whatever, when what's really happening is people don't respect him.

You did not just trot out Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer to talk about the golden age of rap, my god you are reaching. You are telling me you can't hear the difference between Biggie, Wu, Jay-Z and Nas? Is this some sort of all black guys sound alike kind of thing? Outside of the fact that there were only two/three centers of rap at the time (Chicago/East and West) each of them (ESPECIALLY Biggie who created a cadence and flow all to his own) each of them had a very distinct style of rapping. I guess Nas and Jay-z were probably the closest together as far as at least bar structure but otherwise they both attacked melodies entirely different. Wu is another animal in of itself because every rapper had such a unique style and flow and borrowed a lot of influence from other dudes in the area but even the members of that same group didn't sound alike.

Just read this and we can discuss from there: http://genius.com/posts/1669-The-rapper-s-flow-encyclopedia

And from there read http://www.rapanalysis.com/ and it really breaks down rap into small pieces

Finally, if you like Young Thug i'm not saying don't gently caress with him but you have to see how hard he is trying to get your attention....no?

Yeah I was gonna actually reply for real since you're usually a cool dude and I like talking about rap, but you actually linked something from rap genius and some blog where a dude counts words in songs to tell who the best rappers are and that poo poo is just way loving cornball and i can't take it serious at all.

I can tell Nas, Jay-Z, and Biggie apart, same as I can tell Future, Young Thug, and Fetty Wap apart. But both trios have the same surface similarities, and if you don't like the music you're gonna say it all sounds alike. I brought up MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice to point out that even during the "golden age" there were dudes charting like gangbusters that were simple and not necessarily good, so saying that because some dudes make music you consider simple and are having success it doesn't mean rap as a whole is collapsing. Your thing about 3 centers of rap also is straight up retarded since there was about 2 or 3 "centers" in the south itself (memphis, houston, miami), and the west had a couple really big distinct sounds since the bay area stuff was way different from the death row/LA stuff

I just find this funny because a lot of the music you dudes are championing as great (50, Gucci, Jeezy) was the poo poo that I was saying was gonna kill rap, and was lcd idiot music from a bunch of non-rapping content-less clowns. Like to me that was rap's low point. I'm just trying to give some perspective on the whole "rap's dead forever this era sucks" poo poo since I've been listening to it for way too long.

I remember when he was first starting to rap, I was asking dudes who follow comedy and stuff how come none of that humor and writing ability he was known for transferred over. Like you'd expect someone with that sort of background to be better, but nope.

PS. Summertime 06 and Tetsuo still the best albums released this year. TPAB is pretty good and will get its rightful recognition in due time (like decades from now probably but still).
