I think he originally wanted to make a cinematic gaming experience, but once the money started rolling in, he saw the opportunity to do Freelancer 2. The way he wanted to do it, not cut down or corrupted by corporate influences. So he went for that. Problem is he never left the first part behind, so everything had to have state-of-the-art visuals (except the FPS portion apparently), artists and movie stars. And its going pretty much exactly like the first freelancer did, except now he has no one to take the project away or reign him in. And a legion of idiots willing to keep giving him money while at the same time putting absolutely no pressure on him.

Like I said, the only reason it came out was due to Microsoft. Chris Roberts has not successfully shipped a project where he was lead since 2000.

Regardless- Seraph, it depends on what you consider "Defeatism." Personally I think both sides are echo chambers and most people are parroting the opinions they think are going to win them approbation from their peers- it's just human nature. BUT, and I've said this before- this place may poo poo on you for going against the grain, but it will not outright ban you (note how you haven't been banned yet this time, or even really witch hunted?) if you disagree. I genuinely wish there were more people in here making a strong positive case for the game, because CIG are their own worst enemies and lately the quality of the average fan-defender has dropped dramatically.

Also, even if it is echo-prone, at least the echos line up a lot more closely with my own personal observations. Even if 70% of posters here are repeating "Lol doomed" because it's funny... if the game is doomed, that becomes a lot less obnoxious.

I was a serious business defender for a long time, I've sunk over 10K into SC after all. Having it fail is the absolute last thing I want, but it's what appears to be happening. I'm pretty vocal on the RSI forums about my views and I get attacked there constantly so I'm unconcerned about what my "peers" think of me. Thing is, I'm happy to have a reasonable discussion about my concerns and I still subscribe to Hanlon's razor vis-a-vis CIG, but I don't see much grounds for a positive case at this point.

In any case, I haven't refunded or dumped my ships in profit-schemes yet so that demonstrates that at least I haven't entirely given up, but it seems pretty bleak.

That's fair.

Except - spoiler alert - the project is fine and will pull in like 3-9 million USD no strings attached donations next month alone.

Nothing any of us losers ever touch will pull even 1% of that in pure profit donations. Except maybe seraph84 and his bitcoins when the dollar hyperinflates, but that's years away still. Kinda like star citizen.

I'm still of the opinion that something will come out. I just haven't seen anything out of them that indicates an even partially functioning alpha is coming within the next year. Why would you release this? They used a really high, unappealing FoV that makes it look all fish-eyed. The editing of the shots is nonsensical. You have some shots that are barely on screen long enough for you to register them before it cuts to the next. The shot transitions seem to switch between straight cuts and fades seemingly at random - you even have some transitions that go from a straight cut to a fade which looks really strange. Also, i might be crazy but i think the camera for the final shot keeps stopping and starting instead of moving at a constant speed. The cinematography is poorly thought out and the art design is so bland that i had trouble following what was going on, it took me a couple of watches to realise the guys doing the slit throat emote weren't the people we were following the rest of the time. On top of that, they either didn't notice or care about showing all the glitches like the jittering animations and flickering from the aliasing, they just left that stuff in there.

This looks like the product of a person who has never edited a video before, who also lacks any common sense. I thought Chris Roberts made movies? You have a $90 million smoke and mirrors machine, and you can't even be bothered to keep the illusion up with the media you choose to show your marks?

the quick cuts were because thats how long they could run the game client before it crashed

I'm in agreement with you there, I also expect something to come out but along the lines of what you mentioned rather than the over-ambitious space utopia being promised. I'm financially comfortable, so even if the money I put in does turn into a wash its not a big deal (though obviously nothing to be happy about), so I'm not anxious about it, just disappointed. I have a firm policy of not putting in anything that I wouldn't be willing to lose outright, though I am done putting money in now. My wallet won't be opening again for anything. Good call going cash-neutral though.

I mean, I'd recommend that you do, but you have to go with what you feel. Do you feel like you can lose that money or be satisfied with something that is incredibly stripped down? If you can, then yes. If not, sell as soon as you can. They're going in a circular way. They need to release more ships to stay afloat, but then they to design and integrate those ships with new and better features to attract more buyers, which means they need more money, which means they need to release more ships. This does not go to positive places.

Also, just keep in mind, ponzi schemes can and do fail with little warning. If you wait too long, there might be a rush on CGI, when there might be little to nothing left if it collapses before it can release anything.

I can't believe they have the nerve to say that what they showed is the first iteration of FPS. When they demoed the FPS on publicly playable machines earlier this year. What happened to that?

What goons who have networking/UE4 knowledge want to pool our talents together to make a VERY basic proof-of-concept UE4 game that uses a commercially available MMO netcode (the name escapes me but there are a few that are pre-built for UE4 integration) combined with a local physics grid to make a game that:

1. Is first person, with weapons you can shoot
2. Has hollow cubes that have their own local physics grid you can walk around inside as they orient in whatever direction
3. Said cubes have chairs you can sit in and use to steer the cube
4. Can run with a large number of clients simultaneously (using the MMO netcode)

I'm pretty confident this can be accomplished in at least a month's time. Granted there are larger issues like 64-bit conversion (UE4 uses level streaming for large worlds, but this doesn't work for multiplayer games) but the barebone system for how the game should function, when you break it down, is within reach.

I kinda stopped working in UE4 because I got really pissed off trying to figure out network issues relating to having a character be able to walk on walls/the ceiling, but I think it might have been a bug in the engine itself. I basically was just turning off gravity for the player and applying xyz forces for movement, which worked perfectly fine for the host, but no matter what I did to get it to replicate on clients would get it to work because for some reason gravity being turned off wasn't being replicated.

I would never put money into an unmade spaceship game that I wasn't willing to see disappear. Of course there are guys that have put in 50K+, for what purpose, I don't know. If they can afford it whatever, I guess.

I can't imagine what's going on in the heads of people that put money beyond what they're willing to lose into it though. Some of the guys who I've spoken to who have actually borrowed to put money in or other such nonsense especially.

If the game comes out, I'm sure they'll be a grey or white market where you can just re-buy the ships. At least watch/read up on StarCon. If that re-assures you, keep going. If not, cash out.

Why would you be 'willing to lose' any money where there is not an actual investment made that carries a measured potential for a financial return over and above your initial investment?

You cant short star citizen by hanging on (but it would be great if you could).

Get your full amount of money out, throw it behind one of those blue-sky tech billionaire space ventures and then buy the retail game for $59 when it comes out and pull money from your real Space Fund to buy fancy ships piecemeal after launch.

I like how this post goes from funny to nutso and back
