So it seems Collins couldn't have challenged Utley never touching the base (after breaking Tejada's leg). Apparently the rules allow for the replay official to place runners where they would have been if the call they're reviewing had been made correctly
So in other words the replay official could have declared Utley out of the baseline? Or no? The wording kind of confuses me a bit.

I'm so sick of players getting their bodies completely hosed up because baseball has all of this "history and tradition" of maiming each other.

we were never going to come back from this, it was over the second there were no outs recorded on that play

or should i say the second the rules of baseball were suspended and the dodgers didn't have to touch bases any longer

Well maybe I worded it wrong. He slid so far over the base to take out a middle infielder that he didn't even accidentally touch it with his rear end or something. You're not allowed to do that.

No, that would be a result of a separate action by Collins to challenge Utley being out of the basepath.

It'd be really stupid because he was in 3 ft of the basepath, so I can see why Collins didn't do that.

You're right, the rules say he's out, but "good roughneck play" is still a thing. This might change it.

The replay logic goes like this: Utley was aware he was out on the field, so he had no obligation to return to the base and left the field of play as normal. After the replay showed that Tejada did not complete the force, the umpire has placed Utley at second as he would have made an effort to return to the base under that circumstance.

Let's go back to 1860's rules where you could get a guy out by throwing the ball at him while he's running between bases.

Seems like pretty ridiculous logic since Utley would have been out anyway if he had slid early enough to touch the bag.

We probably could if Chase hadn't murdered one our players with a scummy slide with intent to injure. He better hope his head banged Ruben's knee as hard as it looked, because if not, he's taking a fastball to his face on Monday.
