Depending on what you do a VPN may not be necessary. I work from home and the VPN links I have set up are all purely for convenience rather than necessity. Most of my work is through Google Apps or other "cloud" type stuff.

In which case you presumably can get Windows and AV updates from outside the corporate network.

Well in build 10565 when I click on a link in an email I finally got a box pop up asking me which browser to open it with. It was annoying when having firefox open already a link opens in Edge. No more!

The corporate network blocks outbound port 22 and disables split tunneling. Part of my job is managing a large number of routers scattered about the country that would otherwise be physically visited by a numpty in a white van.

I guess I could log on to the VPN and then be able to do no work while I sit around waiting for the corporate IT overlords to bless me with an update, or I could manage them from a personal machine but I really shouldn't have to.

Is there any way of fixing the fault where a tablet won't come out of sleep properly, where the Start button still vibrates but the display doesn't switch on and usually necessitates either a hard shutdown or waiting for like three hours until it decides it wants to wake up again? I've had it on 8.1 and 10 on two different tablets at this point.

Is there any way to change the language of Windows apps besides changing your home location? I've got Windows itself in English, but all the apps are in Danish just because I live in Denmark.

EDIT: Oh, it's the list of languages and not the region setting that decides the app language. I just had to hit "set as default" on English.

Goddamit. I have an old Dell e6510 which I've been carrying the last 5 years - I replaced the HD with a SSD four years ago and then promptly lost the Win7 disc.

Now I just want to clean install Win10, but the upgrade keeps failing with an unknown error. I can't reinstall a fresh Win7, because the chucklefucks at Dell have pulled all the ISOs and Microsoft won't recognize my OEM key for a retail install.

Is there anyway I can ensure this thing is fingerprinted correctly for a free license without being able to finish the upgrade, then do a clean install? I'm worried if I wipe it now I'll be stuck without any valid OS despite having a legit OEM key.

Is it possible to upgrade from 10240 to 10565 using the iso? The option to keep programs is greyed out because of language differences, but changing everything to US (Locale, keyboard) doesnt help

There's an Insider Build (10565) that will take earlier Windows keys during the clean install process. You'll either need to sign up for Insider Preview, or wait for them to update their Media Creation Tool to that version. If you have the sticker key though you should still be able to authenticate with a regular Windows 7 ISO.

There's a certain piracy tool by someone called Daz that will inject the necessary digital signature into a retail build to turn it into an OEM build. Just for god's sake don't install the BIOS emulator stuff that also comes with it if you want a legit install that will pass validation when upgrading.

Thanks guys. I ended up just using an old Win7 Pro x64 ISO I had archived from MSDN during my Uni days, which accepted my key just fine. Strange, since the MS website said it was OEM (and it came with the laptop as a COA) but who cares, really.

Currently leaving it to install some 200+ updates, just so I can download Win10 for the third time and retry an upgrade yet again -- and then rewipe it to start afresh with Win10. Definitely the most frustrating thing I've ever had to do on a PC (and I'm a career embedded software developer, who has serviced family WinME machines).

Next time I'll just give up on the win license and go Debian.

I'm pretty sure that once Windows 7 is installed you can just download the Windows 10 ISO/media creation tool and get going. Without installing 6 years of updates.

ASK ME ABOUT HOW HUMAN LIVES THAT MADE VIDEO GAME CONTROLLERS ARE WORTH MORE

I have any computer I upgrade from Windows 7 or 8, to 10, using the official windows updater.

Then, I do a fresh install using the official Windows 10 ISO, generated from the official media builder and turned into a bootable USB drive (or, alternatively, I use Acronis True Image to image Windows 10 onto a PC).

Windows 10 will at random:

1) Activate as soon as it goes online

2) Activate after an hour

3) Activate after two days

4) Activate after a week

5) Never activate

All in roughly equal proportions. I've seen this behavior across dozens of PCs and about 4 different Windows 10 clone images (Acronis True Image).

So, what the gently caress. Now, after a couple days and some prayer, eventually a Windows 10 image might start activating each new PC instantly, and once it starts doing that it continues to work instantly. If I change absolutely anything on the ghost image, the process of "You must connect to the internet to activate Windows" and "This product key is blocked" errors begin again, only to disappear again just as mysteriously.

Microsoft made it pretty clear that I'm free to do clean installs after the initial upgrade, but what in the hell is happening behind the scenes where both clean ISO installs and Acronis images are rolling the dice? Are the Win10 activation servers still this loving swamped or something?

Well I was wrong, the process could indeed get worse. After reinstalling Win7 and let it churn through the 200+ updates (just to give it the best chance to actually upgrade) I left it overnight again running the Media Creation Tool, and come back in the morning for it to be stuck saying my win7 install isn't activated.

So now tonight I get to phone activate Win7, so I can start a *sixth* download and upgrade attempt of Win10. We have a lovely home ADSL connection so each attempt takes several hours as the Microsoft guys have never heard of catching downloads.

Overall I now rate this a WinME out of 10. The worst part is its never been a technical issue, just lovely programming and lovely DRM blocking my way.

To get the Win 10 install going on my recent build, I just installed Win 7 retail, installed enough of the drivers to get it online & activated, then immediately downloaded the Windows 10 updater. Worked just fine.

There is zero reason on win 7 to do more than install network drivers and activate. Turn off auto updates and upgrade to win 10

Why are you pinning links to the taskbar? Why not just turn on the Favorites bar in Edge (or Chrome...or Firefox) and bookmark them there? This doesn't seem to be a problem that needs a solution.

If you did the following steps:
-Cloning the HDD
-Unplug the old one and plug the new one where the old one was
-Boot normally

And still didn't detect your OS, I'd recommend you to burn a windows 10 .iso and launch the installation then select the tools to fix the boot sectors then launch your OS normally.

I couldn't clone at all with the Samsung Migration tool - as in, when trying to copy the windows 10 to the new Samsung SSD, the software didn't detect an OS to transfer. Other methods (clonezilla) worked fine, and I've had no issues with the samsung software using it on Win 7/8 installs.

Dis is amazing!
I gotta try dis!

I've found Macrium Reflect Free to be consistently easy to use and successful in the last 20 or so drive clones I've done, even compared to CloneZilla and samsung migration tool: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

When you're done the move go to the system protection control panel and check that the disk has system protection set to On so it can make restore points, sometimes cloning turns it off or shows it as on for a nonexistant disk.

Weird then. I cloned my dad's HDD going from an old rear end 200gb SATA 2 HDD with Windows 10 (upgraded from Win 7 home premium 32bit) to a samsung evo without issues.

I used this on my daughters computer when I put an SSD in it. However, it didn't do a straight clone -- it actually ended up shrinking the reserve partition which then caused Windows 10 updates to fail. I had to get another tool to resize the partitions to get it all sorted out. Everything else on the windows partition worked fine.
