There are plenty of people in this thread that defended the three ladies that literally ate babies. I can't tell if that's because the writing is so good or if goons are just hosed up.

I cleared out the quests for the cat school of witcher gear, but I'm still missing the diagrams for the enhanced silver sword and I think the enhanced boots. Are they part of a different quest that doesn't have the generic name, or did the quest tracker accidentally credit me for something I didn't actually pick up?

There are two dodge buttons. One that does a roll, that consumes stamina and another that does a side step. Learn when to use either one. You can parry most attacks from humans, and when you get strong enough some monster attacks.

Make sure to do everything in white orchard. It acts as your tutorial area, and can grant you some decent armor and schematics for witcher blades, which will be the best weapons you'll find for a while. There are also places of powers, which will grant you a free skill point for discovering them. There's also lots of loot to acquire.

The alchemy tree is seriously underrated. Probably one of the best skills in the game is Acquired Tolerance. With this talent, you can chug more potions and decoctions. Early on, its not so great, but by mid to late game it's amazing. Synergy is probably the most OP skill in the entire game.

Don't worry too much about gear you loot, as the best stuff is the witcher gear you craft.

I constantly have on two decoctions that last an hour and a half. I can easily chug two regular potions on top of that. Every potion I consume instantly restores about 1/3rd of my max health.

Alchemy is OP as hell.

Is there any reason not to make decoctions and potions as they become available? I have like one gargoyle mutagen and don't know if you need stuff for things other than making deco/pots

Would be kind of cool if they could be used up for some temporary high tier bonus or permanent weird stat boost, I suppose. Would also be nice if in New Game + you got some more talent slots. That said, it would take major re-balancing since the late game is already too easy.

There are only two arguments I can see for siding with Gaunter:

1) His rewards are dope as hell and I don't care about the viper sword.
2) I don't want to gently caress with the literal Devil, because there's a 100% chance he will want to come back and superfuck with me later.

So I'm finally playing this, but I'm really having trouble early in. I am only in the part after you first meet the Emperor and get sent to meet his spy to start looking for Ciri. For an open world game, I can't do anything because every enemy is so much more powerful than me, and combat is really fast and really punishing. I saw that you should only dodge, but I never know when to do it because mosnters always seem to overwhelm me and I cannot time the dodges well enough because monsters move so fast by the time you see the attack coming and I've moved my finger to the alt key, bam, i'm hit.

There's probably some aspect of combat that I'm missing, but I ran though the training scenario at the start and it gave me the impression it was fairly straightforward.

Also, am I supposed to get xp for killing monsters? It only seems to give me xp when I finish quests. I have 98% of xp needed to level 3 and i've managed to stumble my way through a few drowners and I didn't get any.

Drowners can be hard in the beginning if you don't know what you're doing. They don't like fire, so set them on fire and use bombs. Swing 2 times, dodge. If they bunch up on you or come from 2 sides, roll out and use igni or aard.

Yea, that's how I was able to get them. Its basically, swing dodge, swing dodge. that seems to be the way I'm surviving any combat. The most annoying thing is suddenly the game is not automatically drawing my swords so in combat I have to draw them before I can attack, and I keep forgetting this and end up punching wolves for a few moments before i notice it. Also doesn't help I cannot find anyone in no mans land to repair my swords.

Really, games still having to repair your poo poo?

Do you feel it, Zach?
My coffee warned me about it.

You should first travel everywhere where the yellow notice boards are shown on the map as those places will have blacksmiths, merchants etc. The game will have many places with enemies on higher levels than you at first so ride around on your horse to get the feel of the land. Stop for a fight when you encounter enemies on your level, ride away when they're too dangerous. Repairng items really is not much of an issue in the game as long as you repair your stuff when you do your shopping and later you will also swim in repair kits.

The combat is basically dodging/rolling/blocking and looking for a window to hit the enemy. Learn to use signs like it's a routine - cast Quen at the start of a fight to have a shield up, cast Yrden on the ground to slow enemies down, set them on fire with Igni to get a few free hits while they burn. The idea of the combat is that all the small things you do add up. So do a lot of those small things: cast a sign, roll around, throw a bomb, dodge, catch enemies in Yrden, put oil on your sword etc. If you only focus on swinging your sword and doing like one more thing you'll die. Don't be afraid to run away when you're overwhelmed - kill one or two guys and retreat, the next attack will be easier. You can also fight humans from your horse to make it easier - when you hold the attack button there the game goes into slowmotion and you can grind them down one by one (this won't work on drowners at first as your horse will get scared too fast).

You only get XP from quests, none from killing enemies. If you want to level up fast then do a main quest mission - they're generally tailored to your current level and shouldn't be too overwhelming (until later bosses) and you'll get a lot of XP. In the long run this can result in side-quests giving you almost no XP but don't worry about it - you will finnish the game at level 30+ no matter what happens. Generally you do quests for the stories in this game and not rewards.

Technically you do get XP for killing enemies but it's extremely insignificant compared to quests. It's almost never noticeable unless by some fluke killing a random drowner was the 5 exp you needed out of 2000 to get to the next level.

Was there a reason Olgierd and his brother dressed liked Cossacks? If the game's aesthetic more clearly mirrored medieval Eastern Europe I'd be fine with it, but it seems kinda jarring because no one else around Novigrad dresses that way.

Dress codes were varied back then and also both Novigrad and countryside are based on medieval Poland, Cossacks fit right in.

Finished the expansion. I feel that the whole heart of stone thing wasn't really explained enough, or maybe I just didn't get it. Was it supposed to be the reason why Olgierd went all pscyho? As in, Gaunter took his positive emotions? I guess now we know why Mephisto wanted Peter Parker's marriage...

Also, regarding Master Mirror: I sided with Olgierd, and I liked the riddle game, and I like the fact that the demon/devil is bound by rules, like in so many works of fiction - he may be powerful as gently caress, but there are _rules_ and if he is defeated, he gets rekt.

he took all of his emotions, positive and negative, which is why he turned into an insane thrill-seeker with no moral compass or sense of empathy. he wished "to live every day like it was his last" and O'Dimm managed to twist this into "your heart eventually turns to stone lol". I didn't really understand that bit of wordplay, maybe it made more sense in the original Polish.

Olgried wished he lived each day like it was his last and that is exactly what Gaunter gave him. By turning his heart to stone and removing all emoticons, Olgried was forced to seek extreme activity, thrill seeking hobbies that usually one would do if they knew they were going to die at a certain date.

Personally I've never found any recipes for anything in a smugglers cache, though I seem to remember one person itt saying that they had.
If you are on PC I would save yourself the trouble and get the console enabler from the nexus and just console command yourself the recipe and save yourself a hell of a lot of busywork for uncertain reward.

I don't think there's one place in particular it is concentrated in, and merchants who sell it are few and gouge the hell out of it.

You don't really need to worry about crafting gear until the 1st tier of witcher gear and thats at 14+. You do tend to find meteorite ore in chests and in the loot caches that are usually somewhere around quest/contract boss monsters.

If you can't find them there then you're left with random drops in treasure chests. Other than that it's at least a good idea to find all the Witcher gear as treasure chests in those spots often contain other high-level items like recipes.
