No Man's Sky is a game being made the old-school way though? If it's boring it's boring, it doesn't have people paying 20k for jpegs, doesn't have weird sexual assault fedora hellidiots macking on other people, it hasn't promised anything it can't deliver. It's a fundamental difference between No Man's Sky and Star Citizen. One of them has about a million more hours of in-game footage too.
I just don't get how someone can get mad at No Man's Sky when we have Star Citizen right in front of us. It might be boring but it's also not being evangelized so ??

It was more like right clicking from a distance since you could still "miss" if you were shooting at something with a gun from point black range and the dice roll game up 1.

Quotes from a future biography about Wulf Knight or lyrics to a heavy metal song from the 80's?
"There I was completely wasting, out of work and down
all inside it's so frustrating as I drift from town to town
feel as though nobody cares if I live or die
so I might as well begin to put some action in my life

So much for the golden future, I can't even start
I've had every promise broken, there's anger in my heart
you don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too

You don't know what it's like"

You can't buy the game nor can you give it money so I fail to see why you care so much. Does it have rambling cocaine hoovers? Racist pube PR bumbles? A Scientology-seedling cult-like twinge? Does it have insane photoshops that are as close as we've gotten to explaining insanity? Does it have a case of the ol' floppy feet? Gary Oldman head-horns? High-definition towels? Exploding buggies and dancing emotes? Swedish Mafia non-connections? No? Then why bother?

the worst words in the video game industry right now are "procedurally generated"

Procedurally generated stuff is fine as long as it used correctly.

I think a great space game would take the procedurally generated planets and such from No Man's Sky and pair them together with solid writing and a good story like Star Control 2 (or the Starflight games, which had procedurally generated planets).

poo poo that is pretty much exactly what I want in a space game. Fun flying around space gameplay in a big universe with good writing and an actual story with a point and the freedom to approach it however you want (like Star Control 2, not like the crappy cutscene->mission->cutscene crap that Roberts likes).

Any time you see the words "Procedurally generated" you can just mentally sub in "Boring and really loving generic" and be completely right 99.99% of the time.

(I'm not actually certain of a procedurally generated system that results in cool and interesting stuff but I'm sure at least one must be out there somewhere).

Wasn't this how they made the dungeons in Diablo? At long as there's a story tying everything up and giving you some (optional) goal it doesn't have to suck. poo poo, even Minecraft is fun to explore for a good while.

I seem to remember in Diablo (the first one) that there was a few patterns. Everytime I fought the Butcher there seemed to be only a few layouts of the area you fight him in. The one I always liked was the one with the grates so you could shut the door on him and shoot him with a bow and arrow. The Butcher couldn't open doors you see, emergent gameplay!

This is how ARPGs are made. They aren't true procedurally generated games, their dungeons just have a lot of different variations.

Diablo rifts/dungeons are a random combination of pre-designed pieces so that they fit together in different ways.

And yea, hyperbole aside, so long as there's something else to actually be the focus of the game it's probably OK, but invariably the stuff that actually hypes of procedurally generated XYZ is using that in place of actual content, and not as a background/suplement to it.

There is a difference between proceduraly generated and taking individual items or sets from a list and distributing them randomly or according to a formula.

Torchlight, spelunky, diablo, terraria, starbound and others take blocks of tiles like 20X20 and the designer hand paints or fleshes those blocks out. Then they are distributed randomly (or by formula) in the game to create a psudo proceduraly generated map that still has designed elements to it.

Pure proceduraly generated design is just a chaotic art piece.

No, I mean like it's been made easier for some no name dude to pitch a loving grand idea with a couple of pictures or something and get some amount of money from suckers. Because Chris Roberts has a history in the industry actually makes it worse.

And the best way to get money from suckers is to tickle their nostalgia bone. Do you remember so and so from the past? Well just give me a bit of your money and that thing that you used to enjoy could come back and be better than it was.

Most successful kickstarters are not for some new idea. It's selling that nostalgia. Either this producer used to work for blah and he wants to bring blah back. gently caress remember blah! And it works, because we enjoyed it and we want more of it, but god damnit. Don't purchase chickens when they are still in the egg, because there is no guarantee that they are going to hatch.
