Also because, with a few exceptions, text looks like crap on TV's, which makes them pretty sub-optimal for use in a lot of general purpose or other text-heavy uses. But if all you want to do is connect a PC up so you can watch all your downloaded porn and play a few rounds of Killing Floor or Warhammer: Rat Exterminator, then have at.

Yeah, if you want your TV to function as an overall monitor, then you should specifically be looking for a TV that has the capability to use an RGB/4:4:4 signal and figure out how to get that working. Then text will look generally fine/not blurry and colours won't look as washed out as they might otherwise. That was one of the only reasons I bought my TV in the first place. I knew it could pass 4:4:4, but to get that working I have to use a DVI-HDMI cable and put an EDID override in the Nvidia drivers. On this specific model, that cuts off the audio portion of the signal and just makes it a "DVI - PC display" to the system. As far as I know, there's also an option to do it on AMD cards, I just haven't had an AMD/ATI card since my 9600 XT.

There are threads scattered around the web listing which models can pass a 4:4:4/RGB signal, including 4K at 60 Hz. I haven't been looking recently, so I don't know how exhaustive or up-to-date they are at this point.

Do any of you have recommendations on a reliable G-sync monitor? I've been using a single Dell U2311H which has served me well, but would lke to try a dual monitor setup. I don't care as much about image quality as the U2311H is an IPS and is very crisp so i can just stream stuff on that display--rather I'm more interested in reliability, reasonable price, and decent resolution (1080p or higher), and of course the presence of G-Sync as I'd like to use this one for gaming.

I've been eyeballing an Acer-XB240H but the reviews indicate that hardware problems aren't uncommon. Should I go for it, or does anyone have a better suggestion?

I do almost nothing but games on this rig, and although I can definitely see why people poo poo on TN compared to IPS, the only time I REALLY notice and consider it being a possible reason to not run a gsync monitor (within my pricepoint) is outside games, on heavy whites/blacks like the default colors of SA, where I really don't care. In games, I don't really notice it even having come from 3 previous IPS monitors

So yeah, it's a factor, but gsync far outweighs it for me for what I use it for

I have one. Mine has some minor backlight bleed (definitely noticeable with a black screen, not at all to me during my typical usage). Also of course the colors aren't as good as even the cheap, mediocre IPS monitor I have sitting next to it, though it's actually pretty good compared to the TN it replaced and other TNs I've used personally.

I guess I wouldn't want to watch movies on it or whatever, but for my purposes it's great. I just wanted a monitor as responsive as possible for playing FPSes and other fast action games, with GSync, for as little money as possible. I've been happy with it in that context. If colors or backlight stuff are a big deal to you though, it's probably not what you want.

Looking for monitor recommendations, as the back light in my current monitor has died. What I'm looking for:

-27ish inch
-min 1920x1080
-dvi / Hdmi in
-usage is fps gaming and general Web browsing
-budget $300 Canadian, taxes / shipping included.

I'm coming from a Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM, which from what I can see is a TN panel. I've been happy with this monitor (purchased in 2008) and really just want something equivalent to it. Phone posting at the moment as I'm without a computer. The monitor turns on (well, the power light is on) but nothing on the screen & no flickering or anything, regardless of if I connect with HDMI or DVI, which is why I think the back light died.

1080p starts looking pretty bad at 27", but 1440p 27" monitors are out of your budget. I'd recommend this monitor, it's in your price range, big but not so big that the lack of pixel density makes it look awful, it has low input lag and little in the way of ghosting, 2x HDMI, good built in speakers, good warranty and so on. It will also look a lot better than your old monitor.

The first image is what the monitor looks like straight on, which is fine.

Next is what the monitor looks like from about 45° to the left.

Next is if I move my camera up about 6 inches.

It's kind of like backlight bleed, but it's totally uniform over the whole monitor and entirely dependent on viewing angle. I thought IPS was supposed to have superior viewing angles to TN? This seems much worse. Is this how the panel is supposed to look, or is there a problem with it?

That looks like fairly strong IPS glow, all IPS monitors have some amount of it and it is more noticeable in low light conditions. I use a Dell U2415 in somewhat low light conditions and it has almost no IPS glow even with a black background. But IPS glow is also more noticeable the higher you have the brightness set, what do you have the brightness set to on your monitor? Have you calibrated your monitor?

It's very hard to answer that, I'd say to go to a store with display models and look at those with him, that will give you the best idea of what size and resolution is comfortable for him.

I'd either try an exchange in case you just got a faulty one with super bad glow or a return and try a different model. I have my Dell U2415 set to 36% brightness and I see no IPS glow in normal use and even if I set the screen to full black, crank the brightness up and turn the screen to an extreme angle I don't see anything nearly as bad as yours. I looked up your monitor and I don't see a ton of complaints about IPS glow so maybe it's just that you got a bad one.

I actually already boxed it up to return it to Amazon. I'm going to get a refund because getting and returning multiple monitors which may not fix the issue sounds like a hassle.

I would try the Dell you have Radish, but didn't you say it's not really great for gaming? That's actually about 60% of what I do on my computer so whatever i get needs to have no ghosting and a pretty low input lag, ideally.

I guess I'm going go with my current monitor until it dies or a viable alternative presents itself. Maybe around tax return time I can make the jump to 1440p. Thanks for your feedback and advice guys.

Hmmm, for 1440p/27" you are looking at $500+ for a decent one, so waaay out of your budget. If you are ok with 1080p/27" there is the Asus VX279Q for a little over $300 with a $30 MIR or the Asus MX279H for $330 but with free shipping. Of the two the MX279H is better, the VX278Q is an older model so I feel the MX279H is the better buy since you have to wait like 3-4 months on the MIR to get processed.

Is the general consensus on these that they have less motion blur than the older Korean Monitors? I have a Yamasaki Q270 which apparently has good input lag, but when you swing the camera around on first and third person games it can make things hard to spot. If that's the case, I may just grab one of these instead of going in deep on a g-sync.

I can find them as low as $370CAD, but that one is guaranteed a max of 1 dead pixel. It's over my budget but I'm considering it, as I tend to use a monitor until it actually dies and 1440p seems like it would be better for future proofing.
