This guy put out an album too:

He had several features from everybody's favorite rappers and it sold less than if he passed out bootlegs at a gas station in person. Future had a pretty decent album and like 3 mixtapes of the year.

I'm really interested in hearing the new (Young) Jeezy album that's supposed to come out next week. His last tape wasn't that bad but the few before it were meh.

RBX posted:

What I want from an album is completely different from a mixtape and I'm not gonna excuse them when the album isn't good just because "they release music different". Wayne, 50, and Jezzy all put out quality tapes and singles (Wayne especially) and classic albums. It's not an excuse.

I don't really put any difference between between mixtapes and albums currently. I mean, dudes put out "mixtapes" with entirely new production and big time features. And they drop "albums" with songs that came out years ago, reused beats, etc etc.

The big issue I see isn't that there's not quality or it's not on an album, it's there's too much mediocre stuff being put out. And even if they have albums of great material, you're also getting albums of stuff you're just sorting away as junk, which gives the impression that there's not as much quality and/or that stuff's just being carelessly dumped out on people. You can easily have "albums" that are just singles-tons of the best albums are nothing but singles collections/a bunch of good songs just put together.

Also going back to you saying people called you "old", my thing wasn't about people being old necessarily, it was about people elevating whatever music they listened to as teens to some unrealistic standard and putting on rose-colored glasses for that time period. Like the dudes you named (based on you saying you were 25) were all hottest...when you would've been in your teens. And fwiw I think 56 nights is easily better than anything 50's put out qualitatively, although it's hard to argue against the classic status of get rich or die trying (which I won't, even though I think it's not much more than a good pop album personally). I also said that I think if people were to look back on the period where a lot of those dudes first started dropping stuff constantly without the whole glow of it being new, you'd find nearly as much filler. I think Wayne's a perfect example-IANAHB 2 and S4TW2 weren't really that far off from his "peak" output and most dudes ignored those.

That said, I do agree with you that sometimes you just gotta let people gush over whatever, especially once you've made your point. If poo poo sucks don't be afraid to call it out, but it also gets tired for the 20th time. And most of this stuff seems to go in waves anyways so it's just as likely nobody will care about YT at all next year. You were also largely right about him not having near the support you'd think discussion around him would warrant-RHQ has more actual success and "street" fanbase than YT even though he's largely been an afterthought in thinkpieces and on message boards.

Thug could make a classic album. But he's not going to sit in a studio with a producer for a couple of months and hash it out like that. I think the expectation to release music and see what sticks to the wall has turned me off from a lot of artists

yeah i definitely agree with this. maybe i articulated my argument wrong; it's not that i don't think thug or future couldn't put together a real solid and varied (thematically and sonically) album i just think they lack the work ethic atm or maybe it's just that their fanbase doesn't care about poo poo like that (albums I mean)... as evidenced in this thread. cause they've certainly showed they've got the chops on like dozens and dozens of features and misc songs.

apparently in the year 2015 making tons of songs but not being able to compile and arrange them into coherent album is considered the norm as on long as some of those songs are good (see: gucci, thug). that's kind of disappointing. on the other hand, there's been a few albums this year like TPAB, tetsuo & youth, summertime06... those didnt get half as much love as a zip of random thug leaks though :smith:

You'll find a lot of people posting criticisms of music but it's exclusively people who want to criticise future and young Thug that turn into hysterical bitches in this thread ie you, rbx and that aftermath guy in the last 50 pages or so. Everyone else is being cool, including rbx who seems to have learned that people here like music he doesn't and will post with enthusiasm about it.

so what you're saying is i can't make criticisms of music that - once again, i like, listen to on a regular basis, go to concerts of artists who make said music - in a thread for discussing music? you're a loving idiot you realize that right?

i guess nevermind all that other stuff i was saying. i really think future and thug are flawless artists that make 100% perfect songs; every song they make is gold and every lyric should be empty quoted with flame emojis under it here

PS. i have "posted with enthusiasm" about thugger and fewtch before this post even. look it up in my post history! can i be back in the cool rap fan crew?

People liked/talked about all of those when they came out, which was less recently than Thugger and Future's last poo poo. That's normal? You just come off like you want people to only talk about the stuff you liked instead of whatever's newer that you like less

Well im sorry if i came off that way... I dont think that at all. People should be talking about thug and future because theyre releasing lots of music these days. People should be talking about whomever they want this is a general rap music thread even though it often doesnt feel that way.

The reason this whole thing started is that I said thug and future cant carry an album on their own for whatever reason (and i listed some of my personal theories) and people took that to mean that i dislike thug and future altogether which is like a bannable offense itt and that's when things got "hysterical" and people "caught feelings" (me included)

Never once did i say what people should or should not listen to or discuss and if i did i didnt mean to and owe an apology to someone/thread for the derail

Ps. I think the solution to the whole albums vs mixtapes vs singles is for rappers to start doing more 5-10 track EPs. I hope that becomes a bigger trend. Especially single-producer efforts. (In addition to free mixtapes of course). In an era where even established artists are expected to routinely drop multiple mixtakes a uear, it's no surprise album quality is suffered
