i know/hope you're not realistically comparing 56 nights to illmatic but illmatic is a classic for many reasons - content being one of them. sigh... i don't even want to make this argument because 56 nights is one of my favorite releases this year in a long rear end time but cmon dude... listen to 56 nights for lyrical content then listen to illmatic. that alone is why the latter is god tier classic. there are lots of other factors and reasons for illmatic having classic status but that topic is well covered; no need to talk about it here plus i'm an idiot. i'm not necessarily saying an album needs stellar lyrical content to be considered a classic but it certainly helps to have something unique about it content/theme-wise but these are probably some of the deepest bars on 56 nights:

there's no coherency. i'm not saying he needs to go conscious rap or anything like that but when your subject repertoire is limited to lean (seriously try and find a verse from the past few years that doesn't mention it), making references to trapping/guns/gangster poo poo (as opposed to story-telling), and loving hot groupies/thots then you're going to run out of gas pretty soon (cue joke about "then how is rap music still viable :smug:?") and that's really sad because I think if fewtchy could perhaps go easy on the lean/misc pills and put some serious effort into writing a crazy good, thematic album with varied subjects and styles then that would blow everything he has done to date out of the water cause he's good. you can tell he's got it in him like i feel like he has so much potential it makes me want to cry ;)

Think they were mentioned before but check out the various Metro Zu dudes (Lofty305 and rubenslikk especially) since I think they do the same thing only better. Couldn't get into Father's stuff at all, dude just sounds lame for most of his stuff.

I thought the same after hearing him on the remix of 'It G Ma' but it's silly to write someone off based on a single verse.

there's no coherency. i'm not saying he needs to go conscious rap or anything like that but when your subject repertoire is limited to lean (seriously try and find a verse from the past few years that doesn't mention it), making references to trapping/guns/gangster poo poo (as opposed to story-telling), and loving hot groupies/thots then you're going to run out of gas pretty soon (cue joke about "then how is rap music still viable :smug:?") and that's really sad because I think if fewtchy could perhaps go easy on the lean/misc pills and put some serious effort into writing a crazy good, thematic album with varied subjects and styles then that would blow everything he has done to date out of the water cause he's good. you can tell he's got it in him like i feel like he has so much potential it makes me want to cry ;)

sorry, i can't let you call the song of the year incoherent. i don't want to get super rap geniusy but the song -- and most of his really really great tracks -- are future grappling with the juxtaposition of people he recognizes himself in still struggling while he's out here super successful, and being trapped in an endless cycle of vice and addiction leading to bad decisions leading to more vice and addiction. poo poo's actually deep af without the need for a blatant mission statement like k dot or the other human nyquil rappers.

i don't think 56 nights is a classic though.

I agree largely with your read of Future, but calling Kendrick human nyquil or saying he needs blatant statements is pretty much just wrong-just as wrong as saying Future's an incoherent one note rapper who only talks about drugs and women.

Like I've defended Future and others working in that style, but there does seem to be a tendency in some circles to dismiss anyone as "boring" or whatever who's not emoting trap cliches over 808 mafia production.
