Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

quote:

I have to say. I agree with you. I have stopped paying attention to the media coverage of the project. While there is some good coverage by people that are actually following the project and understand the dynamics of it (I am looking at you GameStar and GamerNexus), those articles are few and far between and for the most part don't really offer any new insights into the project if you have been following it from the start. So, I have come to realize a couple of things.

First, the coverage is inconsequential. Star Citizen's funding success is not dependent on its media coverage. There hasn't been very much coverage of it in general and there is enough empirical evidence to suggest that regardless of whether the coverage is positive or negative, the increased exposure nets the project more funding.

Secondly, if you have not been following the project from the start and you look into it now, there is an overwhelming amount of information to wade through. One cannot expect anyone to sort through all the information CIG puts out on top of all the "opinions" of thousands of backers that are either delighted about the project or hate it so much they are actively hoping to see it fail and then make sense of it all. So you really cannot blame people for being confused by it all.

Third, there is no point in getting angry at people that "hate" on the project, as those people only fall into three categories. There are those that feel jealous or contemptuous about the project and would just love to see it all burn to the ground. Well, there is no point trying to convince them that they are wrong to feel that way, because they have already made up their mind. Then there are those that are either uneducated or idiots (Let's face it, the internet has and unending supply of those). Their opinions should not frustrate you, because frankly their opinions are irrelevant. Plus, it is always best to avoid discussions with idiots, because they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Lastly, you have people who fit into both categories. They are both contemptuous and chronically uneducated. The only discussion one can hope to have with such folk is some form of circular word vomit. In other words, utterly pointless.

So in the end, when I read yet another uninformed blog/article I just shrug and say "meh" and chalk it up as a symptom of being the largest crowdfunded project of all time. That's it. Every funding model has its limitations. Being funded by a publisher both has advantages and disadvantages, and thanks to Star Citizen we have learned that open development is a double edged sword. While it affords you flexible cash flow and no strict deadlines it also means you have no privacy when you are iterating on your product and as a result you are bombarded with unqualified opinions.

I get asked about Star Citizen a lot. And the best way I have found to describe the conflicting information surrounding the project is an analogy that seems to satisfy the inquirers (at least among the peers in my specific field of nerdology ). So here it goes:

Why is Star Citizen so controversial? - Well, imagine for a minute that Chris Roberts is Craig Venter. And let's say for the sake of argument Craig has successfully crowdfunded the development of a shotgun sequencing method for the mapping of the human genome and in return he promises transparent development that incorporates the feedback of his benefactors. Now let's say his backers are : A lab technician, a physicist, a rabbi, an accountant, a car sales man from Vegas, a dunkin donuts clerk from Jersey, your grandmother, a vegan hipster yoga instructor from bel air, a personal injury lawyer from Brooklyn, a vietnam veteran helicopter pilot, Craig's overly attached ex-girlfriend, a homeless drunk, a gaggle of 8 year-old middle schoolers who are all dressed up as Capt. Jack Sparrow and led by a grumpy old Jean-Baptiste Lamarck who isn't entirely convinced DNA is a thing. - You with me so far ? :) Good, Now let's assume all those backers are attempting to discuss the project in anonymous public forums, while Lamarck and his pirates are writing down random thoughts about the project on bubble gum wrappers and sending those out on random homing pigeons." - Consider this for a second and then ask yourself, why wouldn't you expect controversy ? :)

quote:

Best TL;DR ever!

(and I read it all, but that really sums it up nicely)

My view on clickbait articles is that it spreads the word. People hear about SC who haven't heard of it before.. and they hear it's a farce. Then they run into another article and it says it's a scam for a different reason. They they come across that 8000-word missive idiot, and then something clicks in their head. There's so much against Star Citizen, and they're all telling different tales, grasping at straws to get any and all things wrong with it out into the public.. and yet there'a a million backers at an average of $90 each. This usually takes a while for the readers to twig onto but eventually the lightbulb moment happens and they wander over to here.

Then they see the mountains of info, the positivity of the community, the support in attempting to answer questions and help each other out. They watch a few videos, they read a few articles on the plus column of why SC is going to be great, and they start to consume more of the positive.

And then they back it. Not because they're blind "Christ" Roberts followers who have been beguiled out of their money.. they probably haven't ever heard of CR.. but they back it because they realise this is actually happening - it's on its way, and it seems to have the vibrancy and life that all other current space sims lack. It's THE game to make. And it's already got the player-base, and the Orgs, and the huge variety of ships and roles.. and the graphics, my god the graphics.. and sound!!! Best immersive sound of any space game I've ever played. And best of all it doesn't cost $2500 like they've been told, no, it only costs about $40 for both a single player game and an MMO. It's basically cheap in comparison to almost everything out there.

So when people read all the negativity at the start, it's good. It makes potential backers aware, from the very beginning, that the project may fail.. and with the negativity out of the way, it opens the way for the positive aspects to flow in, tempered with the realistic caution every rational person should have. It's good for the game, and good for the community to have a few more level heads.

TL;DR - all media is good media

" we’re trialling a new technique that will vastly reduce the memory cost to just a small fraction of what it is currently, with the bonus of actually achieving more detail, so we’re excited to get this tested and hopefully in-game soon. We’re also going to start a major re-work of both the UI rendering and shield shader. Both of these were written very early in the project and as the design of the game has become more finalised it’s become clear they need an upgrade in order to do everything we’ll need in the final PU. For the UI we’ll be integrating it more closely into the rest of the rendering pipeline which will allow it to fit better into the scene and also be slightly cheaper to render. For the shield shader the technique will get a major visual and performance improvement which we’re excited to get started on!"

"Broussard’s Duke Nukem engine — called Build — produced the best-looking game around. Barely a year later, though, it looked antiquated....By the end of 1999 [two years after development began], after blowing several publicly proclaimed release dates, Duke Nukem Forever was nowhere near completion. Half the weapons were still just sketches....f the game starts getting delayed, it’s the publisher that cracks the whip. Broussard and Miller were free to thumb their noses at this entire system. Indeed, they even posted gleeful rants online about the evil of publishers and their deadlines. “When it’s done” became their defiant reply whenever someone asked when Duke Nukem Forever would be finished..."

Derek and his various manias, psychoses, and internet warlord crusades are to be coddled and cherished. I mean a real basic tenet of cinema is that you don't kill off the most interesting character unless you have something equally interesting to fill the slot.

Same rules apply here; this ain't calculus.
