It's honestly amazing to read all the enthusiasm in that thread.

If I had spent $1000+ on spacepixels I'd bloody well be demanding the stupid thing free. Hell, they haven't even shipped all their backer rewards as it is-- and now, the very group they should be treating like Kings and Princes they are instead fleecing all the further with a transparently cheapass not-black "Black" status card that denies their unique identity, demands their fealty until death, nut-punches their very dignity, and is certain to impress no one other than other fellow nut-punched not-black "Black" card holder chumps who are PROUD they spent $1000+ on space pixels.

This is definitely a pro-click.

Watched bits of that '10 for the Chairman' thing and thought it was pretty great that Chris is still using the future tense to talk about essentially every significant aspect of gameplay. Like NPCs "will" be able to man turrets in some vague fashion. Three years into development on a universe simulator and still working the kinks out of the engine and trying to make the basic flight model not garbage.

The fact that CIG continues to let these sort of people thrive, and actually encourages them is all the more reason they need to be delivered to the authorities via Dr. Smart

If thy had at least put up a bullshit warning on their buy page, similar to 'gambling is addictive' or whatever, or released a note to all backers that their jpeg's do not count as an investment.

But nope here we are, people with 'little disposable income' keep shoveling it into the CIG coffers because they have a false sense of whatever it is Chris has brainwashed them with

Please don't send Derek down another rabbit hole like this. There's only pellets at the bottom of this one. He needs to stick to the Big Story.

I'm kind of wondering of CIG has purged all his high-level sources. He's not had as many scoops of late. Sandi's team in Santa Monica is a decidedly more obedient one now-- Ben, Lando, Justin and Alexis are all Sandi loyalists and apologists. And Thomas probably has heard by this point that he better drat keep his eyes from rolling and his lips from spilling "Upstairs/Downstairs" stories if he knows what's good for him.

There are obviously many others there-- but I assume the Marketing and Community folks are now the front line of the PR war for the "Everything is Awesome" narrative.

If disgruntlement is openly spoken of, it's probably not in LA. Makes me wonder what Tony Z, Mark S, and the other Austin pros are talking about these days...

It would prompt bitter tears from the Concierge Black Card holders if ours were actually well designed, black metal and customized while their's are not black, mass produced and goofy rear end.

Having a superior execution without requiring $1000 spaceship purchase to qualify definitely would definitely make the point. Then we could drink "Bitter Tears" beer, while their only option would be licking tears off each other's faces...

I can't brew beer but i can take a stab at a design. Got a vector of the SA grenade already.

Btw- it's only $0.50 for name customization per card... It would be the little touch that hurts so much...

I'm not sure how I missed this post but if your serious I would definitely be in for 1 or a few. I'm no whale and work retail but I would totally set money aside for these + the beer.

It's not zoning. That's more like what Starsiege Tribes did, that is, moving vehicle combat. If you notice, all of the (capital) ships are oriented in a single direction. That's because the gravity vector is global (for the map). sv_gravity 600

(Also, it's pretty janky when the ships are moving, but so's SC, so who's counting!)

The Space Marshal has chosen three favored goons to act as diplomats for the United Outllaw Mothership. A Kingship is pretty much already in the bag since Sailor67 has pledged a fleet of volunteers from Operation Pitchfork.

The chosen ones are:

These three goons should be considered close friends of Seraph now. This means they shall wield tremendous power in the 'verse, and as such the rest of you betas would do well to fear and respect them.

I will look into the card thing in more detail tomorrow but it honestly looks pretty easy to do, and do well.

Beer sounded like he was at least considering the brewing challenge. We could probably get the cards printed, the whole batch brewed, and the bundle delivered before CIG's cards even start shipping... Sadly (and hilariously.)

The first two years for FO4 were mostly preproduction (artwork) and setting their target, location research and technology research, like deciding to switch to a deferred renderer. Then full production slowly ramped up. One thing to note is that Bethesda's RPG team is significantly smaller than CIG. I recall the article mentioning they've stuck with a team size of around 100, compared to Rockstar's size of over 1,000.

That's what I based my statement on, I just didn't link the GTAV blogs to keep the size down.

First, I want to say my post was kinda dickish and you're turning out to be an awesome goon as I read more of your posts.. so... sorry.

It's late and I don't want to make a graph. Someone else please do it.

** note: a lot of dev houses that are NOT Bethesda are also in the DMV area. This is cool.

I want to make some notes on this. The reason the "SperGraph" is bullshit is because they copy/pasted from Wikipedia. Wikipedia cites "beginning of development" as when someone says, "I want to make a game" and failing to account for the months or even years to when they buckle down and start actually doing something.

For example, the SperGraph says ESO began in 2007. However it does so using the fact that Zenimax Online began in August 2007, and it took about 18 months before they could begin. I gave the SperGraph the benefit of the doubt and rounded it to "2008" as a whole.

Another example, People state Frontier has "always been working on Elite since the 80's" and while that is kiiiinnnda true, it's not completely. Cobra is used for all of their games, such as Rollercoaster Tycoon. However something interesting came up. Frontier was full into development of a game called Outsiders During this time, Braben was often asked about Elite IV, and he would say he wanted to do it.. however only if/after Outsiders is done or put on hold. This is about 2 years after he got the name rights back I believe. I count Elite's development time at the point in which Outsiders is put on ice.

Evolve was built with a heavily modified Cryengine, and it almost failed twice. I still found it impressive in terms of schedule given their size and that they are essentially modders who ended up professionals.

GTA V spent at least 1 year of its development time just doing scripting and voice acting, and by what I've been able to look up this is during the time that RAGE was being retooled after RDR.

Guild Wars 2 is amazingly bad in terms of game development. It took them forever and they worked at such a strange pace. From 2007-2009 they just lumbered along until about the tail end of the year then crunched like hell dumping out the alpha/beta and missing release by only 8 months.

Lastly, in order to get accurate 1st account info for the Everquest beta I ended up on Usenet. loving Usenet. People were waving their dicks about 28.8 modems. I got lost reading all that nostalgic poo poo for a half hour.

Who’s to say there isn’t some stuff longer term that you may discover that has a bit more backstory to the Vanduul but generally they’re sort of an opposition to the UEE in the same way the Visigoths and the Vandals and antiquities were in opposition in the Roman Empire.
They don’t think or approach things the same way that we do as Humans and so they sort of see us and our planets as weak and as resources to harvest basically. They take what they want where they want. I don’t know whether you would say they’re fundamentally evil or they just have a very different point of view than we do, so there you go!

No problem! Thanks for all the details, I'm about to head to bed, but seeing some of those made me smile (holy crap EverQuest 1). For me, Elite: Dangerous is one of the most impressive development efforts. The way they managed to pitch a core design, follow through with implementation, and deliver one of the best looking and certainly best playing space sims is mind blowing. That they fit it within 3 years is even more impressive. Both of my roommates are running it (one with my 'borrowed' TM Warthog), and besides the grinding, having a good time.

I wish someone would come along and deliver something as beautiful as Elite, but with the design skill of Tie Fighter (mission design). I feel like a number of us have been pining for a quality plot-driven space sim to show up again, and that's a thing that CIG is just not delivering any information on (in addition to oh, SC at the moment). I can have fun in a space sandbox (see Rebel Galaxy), but my real wish is to be playing a game with mission complexity and depth of a classic Lucasarts sim.

I got lost reading all that nostalgic poo poo for a half hour.

just get us in the playoffs
i dont think people realize that games were fun when you were a kid BECAUSE you were a kid. i remember playing the TIE fighter demo on some demo cd we got in the mail and learning every key myself because there was no tutorial. it was fun back then, would make me kill myself now. all these people saying star citizen is going to reinvigorate their interest in games are forgetting that they are losing interest because they are old and getting older and video games loose a lot of their fun when you get old.

Investing in SC

There's another thread about an awesome guy who has pledged $30k, and he is surely an admirable guy, no doubt. But I'm not that guy in so many ways. I don't have $30k, and if I did, I'm a cheap bastard and I'm not giving that kind of money to a game.

a.) it's a game.
b.) it's money.

But invest? I might do that.

I can't throw down $1000 for a share but If there was something like a mutual fund with CIG the only stock, so I could shuffle dribs and drabs of coin into it with the promise of a return? I'm a lot more likely to do that. I think some of us might be.

So if CIG ever gets to the point of needing new sources of lovely money, would you guys do that thing?

a.) the new money wouldn't be from an established game publisher, i'd like to think we are a more reasonable bunch.
b.) mitigates the understandable reluctance to donate big stacks of dollars/euros/dinero..
c.) raises the headache factor for CIG as entitled as some can be about pledging, imagine the shitstorm if they were actual investors.

Obviously there are pros and cons, it's not something they seem to need atm, but if and when, it's an idea for putting on the table.

How is the thread bad? We might possibly be having someone brew an ACTUAL beer in honor of the fail that is Star Citizen, and maybe even our very own SA Concierge Black Cards to prove we didnt spend $1000 on the thread. This thread is totally made of awesome.

Excuse my worthless shitposting because all I can ever hope to accomplish in life is to rot away the braincells of strangers on the internet with my irredeemable brainworms.
What is the big deal with TIE Fighter's missions, anyway? I remember the dynamic music and the nicer flight model and AI, but not the missions.
