How could it have been real in engine gameplay with all (and more) of their current list of blockers? Croberts learned from the previous massive fuckup where everything crashed and bugged out constantly and he spent 70% of the presentation saying "I swear to myself that this was working fine yesterday" and they just rigged the whole thing.

I'm inclined to believe it wasn't prerendered due to all the little fuckups during the presentation, like the dude that got stuck in the ship's elevator and then you see being flung away out of the corner of the screen when they decide to take off without him. And also that they missed the whole gun battle.

This is what I'm expecting. In a -very- controlled and limited environment they demonstrated it at GamesCom and an improved version at CitizenCon. If they don't deliver it, that's when my support is entirely gone. I already stopped funding it back in July (grats Derek).

When I originally decided to support the game (after the Connie reveal), I knew I'd want to play around with a set of ships, so I set aside around $2k to try out things. Connie or two, Aurora, 350r, and I wanted a passenger transport if they decided to make something similar to my other love, Flight Simulator X. Commercial sims are my bread and butter, and PMDG airplanes (in FSX) + FS2Crew (simulated crew members and passenger issues/complaints) are my greatest love. So I planned to make the final funding donation a passenger luxury ship.

I haven't put in that last bit because I want to see AC 2.0 get delivered and be functional before I give them any more support. If I cannot have my friend join me, and the two of us have a good time loving around, then that's the end of my support.

It's a misconception of what CIG has talked about. They've said the economy is designed to be mostly simulated, but not by AI. I'm paraphrasing their intentions (since, of course, we have not seen this in action) - The intention is that there is a wide economic simulation running and jobs are dispatched based on the needs of that economic model. If a job is not picked up, it's passively simulated (the material or income is updated as being shipped and reaching its destination).

Missions where players are involved (on the pirate side, merchant escort side, or transport side) are run in the persistent universe. Transport ships run the shipment, again, this is all supposedly the design.

As they haven't even gotten the baby PU out in AC 2.0, or shown off these economic systems even running in a simulation, it's all just speculation based on developer statements.

Either way, there won't be millions of AI NPCs flying missions and there sure as poo poo won't be anywhere near a million players.

It would be a deep simulator, complex, with numerous interacting systems. You could travel widely in the galaxy, join in with different factions, battle, fly together with friends, all in a procedural generated universe. X-Wing was a wonderful thing, and I loved the simple depth of the story, which wasn't in extraneous and long cutscenes, but presented in mission where the story beats would influence the mission. You suddenly discover that the A-wing group coming to escort your transports were attacked by the empire. The only one who could defend them is you... and the Tie-Bombers are coming from both sides.

This actually sounds like an evolved version of FTL that could be a lot of fun.

It's always been my interest :) For a time I was considering a career change to become a pilot, but the cost, time, and the bad market was enough to convince me to stay. I'd still love to, and would like to take private lessons in the future, but I know I'll likely never be a commercial pilot.

So, simulation. I just got tired of FSX because it has not had any improvements because of what Microsoft did to the ACES team. (And Prepare3d isn't making any major corrections).

I'm of the opinion that 2.0 will release, but it will be incredibly shallow and you will see and do everything there is to see and do within an hour or so. For anyone offsite reading this, consider: it has taken them this long, this many millions of dollars, with this much difficulty, to release what little is included in 2.0. It isn't even a full star system, and the planets have been confirmed to be textured spheres. Their celestial body tech hasn't even been perfected, so they can't even begin to churn out more systems rapidly enough to build the universe of 100+ systems that they promised.

I bring it up time and again but it's really the most hilarious failure of this whole thing. They are making a space game but after 3 years they still don't have tools to procedurally generate stars, planets, presumably asteroids, and whatnot. Even if they did, why haven't they had a tech post describing such systems? So 2.0 comes out, then what? Obviously they need to iterate on it adding more systems, more objects to explore, and give the 2.0 map an actual central star, but how long is that going to take vs how long it has already taken them? It's not like they can use a tool to build systems out rapidly, at least not that they have demonstrated. One would think they'd have tools they could generate stellar objects with so that generating 100 systems (minus stations and whatnot) could be done relatively quickly, but alas.

People are doing it in their free time in UE4... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxVwzjKvCJk&feature=youtu.be

yes but you will harmlessly bounce off because it is a large textured sphere, also the texture will be extremely stretched as you fly close and the pixels of the texture stretch for tens of kilometers

That would make me happy. One of my biggest complaints with most of these games is that planets and stars are never their proper size. They're always far, far too small. Elite is one of the few that is accurate (according to their wiki), so this is cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kr7TliIWes

Though because of their texture it is impossible to appreciate the scale of it. The texture makes the star look FAR too small for how massive it truly is.

Edit: Looking at the lightsecond distance (4,250) he seems to be at twice the distance from Jupiter to the Sun, but because of the texture, it's hard to appreciate the scale. I believe my math is correct on that.

I loved all of it, but X-Wing was limited. You only got one hyperspace jump, one mission location, and when you finished, you warped out. You could never warp to another area, to dock with capital ships to reload or repair, to pilot capital ships. BattleCruiser was offered up as that opportunity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlecruiser_3000AD

Eventually it would see release in 1996, but the release was unstable on my system. I had trouble getting it working, from reasons (I've heard) related to the forced release by Take Two. I never tried the other releases, and instead focused more on Tie Fighter (1994), I-War (1997), FreeSpace (1998), which, while limited, had enough features to be enjoyable to play, even if they were far more limited in scope.

But I'll never forget how great the promise was and how excited I was in the late 1980s to hear of this great sim that was coming out.

That's assuming they've made the celestial objects at proper sizes. The best thing about Freelancer was the 4km-radius planets and 2km-radius stars that you could “land” on if you turned damage off. :D

I would disagree: X-Wing, Tie Fighter, FreeSpace, I-War 1 and 2, FreeSpace 2, Wing Commander (1, I didn't play the others), Rebel Galaxy and FTL were all wonderful experiences with Tie Fighter being a favorite.

On the losing side we have: M.A.N.T.I.S., X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, (the mission design of FreeSpace 2), X-Wing Alliance, and I've Found Her, all of which I did not enjoy. Overall, it's been a good experience.
