OhDearGodNo posted:It's surprising because it's gone from CIG moving goalposts (polished pre-alpha) to completely changing them (FPS now 2.0) and eventually just questioning why people keep attacking them with ridiculous things like "promises" or in a more professional sense "progress." Right. Then there's this gem. Note that in my last blog, I claimed that not even 10% of the game was completed, after four years and $95m quote:I can't even IMAGINE a full release at this point

Beer4TheBeerGod posted:Almost none of the art stuff is finished, and what they've released as "playable" is still a WIP. The Cutlass is a perfect example. Programming drives a significant portion of the assets that have to be made. For ships alone you have flight mechanics, boarding mechanics, damage model, docking mechanics, interior gameplay considerations, and a host of other things that should have been finalized on gray boxes long before we had flyable starships. Instead CIG has wasted a significant amount of time and money having to redo things that were once considered to be in their final form. Three years (really four) into development we still have a limited understanding at best of every major game mechanic that's supposed to be implemented even though people are flying their pretty starships and running each other over in buggies. That's like trying to build a car at the same as as while God decides what the Laws of Physics should be. Not only does CIG have a tremendous amount of outstanding assets, they also have a tremendous amount of waste. Right. Which is where, after my analysis, I arrived at the conclusion (in my last blog) that not even 10% of the game was thus far completed. Right now, it's all one big glorified proof-of-concept (in part) tech demo.

Because of art assets? Or why, back when I said it was delayed indefinitely, they denied it, made it movie showing it off, then promptly (mere weeks later) shelved it under the guise of moving it into the PU build. heh

It would be hilarious (unless you work there) if everything rumoured was true but lets be realistic, there's still far more chance of a damp squib ending to this as drags on in limbo for years than a glorious abrupt explosion. Release is 2016 and next year they'll downsize again to cut costs and then release will be 2017, these people have a dozen separate companies, they probably aren't entirely stupid. months later i still dont know if the people who put money (particularly over a grand) into star citizen deserve their money back chris roberts belongs in jail for some kind of fraud either way, but it's white collar (in more ways than one) so I doubt that will happen I mean if you gave someone over a grand for jpegs of potential video game starships you kind of deserve that loss... the people who profited off the grey market (aside from CIG etc) are kind of my heroes for this.

Beer4TheBeerGod posted:Rebaselining a program is basically an admission that something hosed up, and that either the technical challenges were greater than you expected, that your ability to project the productivity of your workers is poor, or that circumstances outside of your control have influenced development. There are no circumstances outside of CIG's control that have influenced development so either they hosed up estimating the technical challenges or they hosed up estimating the capabilities of their own workforce. The answer, of course, is that they've done both. Normally rebaselining is a common part of project management; you evaluate the circumstances and take your improved understanding and experiences to establish a new timeline that (hopefully) has greater confidence than the previous one. It's a natural part of any sort of major development. The problem with CIG is that they have rebaselined so loving often that there is absolutely no sense of confidence or credibility left. The FPS alone was rebaselined so many times I've lost count. When that happens the idea of "percent currently planned" is meaningless because it's blatantly clear that there is no plan. Instead we have a bunch of talented, driven people being subjected to constant crunch time at the behest of a visionary with a history of terrible project management who arbitrarily changes things to suit whatever whims he has that day. There is nothing to compare because there is no plan. There is only whatever Chris wants. That is all.

the concept that some people saw a crowdfunding campaign for a game which rewarded people for sinking thousands of dollars into it for starships... thought it was a good idea... and put thousands into it makes me think of the type of rampant consumerism driving games in general; . "Unggg! <brand> is back! take all my money before I can form a coherent thought!" WING COMMANDER YALL!!~~~ my new definition of a nerd is someone who gets hype over nostalgia/branding/marketing for a game, comic, or other entertainment.. and then blows a bunch of money on it BEFORE deciding if its a good product. just, on principle.

It's supposed to be out Any Day Now, but they admit that they can't get any footage from it because of how many game-breaking bugs there are. Derek claims that they are not even close to having a workable program and that it would probably be wiser if they don't release anything than put out the unplayable and feature-stripped mess they have right now. But if they don't put out anything by the end of the year it will look really, really bad so they are scrambling to put something out the door. They also just started building another office complete with ~another MoCap Studio~ in Santa Monica for completely inexplicable reasons. Sales are down by a lot. The yearly anniversary sale is in four days and should have some Grade-A attempts at pocket fleecing. Derek promised a simultaneous blog release maybe? but who knows with that guy. I have come to love your synopsis when you do them. In fact, as soon as someone posts "I've just recovered from a meth high, wtf did I miss?", I start scrolling for your response
