Has anyone here seen Doko Roko on Kickstarter? It seems to be it's more of a rogue-lite than a roguelike, but so far it looks really pretty, and it's already been funded with 10 days to go. Can anyone with more experience in these matters spot any obvious "this isn't going to get made" red flags, or can I throw some of my money at it without reservation?

DoomRL is free, mechanically pretty simple, and not too hard on easy/normal difficulties. It also has an option of graphical or TTY interface (and I host a server for the latter). Dungeons of Dredmor is commercial and has an awful inventory UI, but is easy and accessible and makes a good beginner roguelike. Sproggiwood looks cute and welcoming but will tear your face off and eat it.

Honestly I tend to recommend it for anyone who is vaguely interested in roguelikes but doesn't have an entrance point. It's got a very simple and intuitive system, it's fairly forgiving with some of its classes, and deaths only affecting a single level (which tend to be fairly short) makes it pretty accessible.

The developer has never actually finished a game before, so it's pretty much guaranteed they'll be dealing with a lot of surprises and unexpected roadblocks down the road, and how a developer deals with those will vary based on personality. Many crash and burn, while a minority are able to forge ahead and survive to the other end... That said, the release date is rather realistically placed two years from now in 2017. Also, what's been done so far is pretty impressive.

Awesome! posted:suddenly i want to know more about towerclimb. that is not what i expected from looking at the games store page things start off pretty mundane, with your bug level and your plant level and your lava level, but the second half of the game really goes places. with a lot of these roguelike platformer things i feel like they don't go far enough, like by the end i always wish things escalated further and there was more to do. i don't think towerclimb has that problem. there's just so much crazy poo poo to find and die horribly to. btw here's a video of the fun thing i posted in spoiler tags. it's got some dude's face down in the corner yelling a lot but i mean like 3 people play this game so this is as good as it gets for videos.

Towerclimb chat: What's the deal with the eyeball dudes in the Temple of Devotion? I thought the gimmick was you can't move while their gaze is passing over you, but they seem to be chasing me even when I'm standing still. Just hosed my game by having this happen twice (no sword). Is it line of sight in addition to movement?

Not entirely sure what the update entails, but it doesn't even matter because Red Rogue is, and will always be, freaking awesome: http://st33d.itch.io/red-rogue

Is it line of sight in addition to movement? You're not getting really close to them are you? If you're in the green cones you'll set them off moving or not. If it's not that, I dunno what's happening to you. Never had them come after me when it wasn't obvious that it was my fault. If they're beelining at you from across the map for no reason maybe report it on their forums or the steam forum so if it's a bug they can fix it. e: if you're getting caught by the red cones when you're pretty sure you aren't moving maybe it could be some kind of analog stick problem? Like the stick is old and it leans to the side just the tiniest bit? Had that happen with controllers before. Dunno if that would set them off though. lets hang out fucked around with this message at 15:18 on Nov 13, 2015 |

Ah, thanks for the info, I think I must have been too close, at least the second time. the first time I think I was further away but I was hanging on a wall and it's possible I slipped up. It was a rough end - those things don't stop chasing you even after killing you over and over. I went through all 6 of my extra revive potions trying to get away D:

oh wow, that sucks. Whenever they see me I take it as my cue to start burning jumps like crazy, since if I do manage to get away at least I can count on there always being a witch outside the zenith. And also, from my extremely limited experience there, I think the zenith's random generation is less inclined to present you with situations where you need jump potions, and if that's true you might as well burn them when you do need them. Maybe? oh also you can try nailing the eyes with corrodes. You probably won't kill them unless you brought a lot with you but it does get them away from you and it takes them like a second or two to recover.

Hmm its been a while since I played Armoured Commander, let's see how its been doing with all those upgrades. Yup, still hates and brutalizes me. loving gun needed a 4 on 2d6 to penetrate me, so of course it rolls a 3. Still, its had some excellent improvements since a few months back. I suggest anyone interested give it another go.

As somebody who's cool with ascii, and a big fan of ADOM, I'm now really curious as to what entering the chaos plane looks like with tiles. Because in ascii it looks like this and it's amazing.

Dr. Dos posted:As somebody who's cool with ascii, and a big fan of ADOM, I'm now really curious as to what entering the chaos plane looks like with tiles. underwhelming! it's just normal dungeon tiles, although the steam version's coming out in two days and i hope it spices it up because ascii chaos realm kicks rear end. there's different tilesets for the ice queen realm and fire temple so They Have The Technology in theory.

What, really? It should be a completely random mishmash of every single tile and art asset in the game.

ADOM has dropped: http://store.steampowered.com/app/333300 It might've taken Biskup 3 years, but he's brought the game into the 21st century. TB might be a bit on the eccentric side, but ADOM is the reason I play roguelikes (to the exclusion of all other games), so my view is the least I can do is drop him some support.

Hahaha that's amazing. In other news, I've been playing a lot of Invisible Inc, which I've gone from thinking is a good game to thinking is a great game. I was inititally turned off by the art style and so didn't buy it for roughly forever, but the core mechanics are really good and are refreshingly new for someone who has played a lot of other roguelikes. Suprised it doesn't have more of a following here.

Been playing Bionic Dues and Deadnaut and that's been filling my rogue holes pretty satisfyingly these days. Bionic Dues plays nice on a flash drive and still... lacks cohesion and interesting dungeon design but generates difficult enough scenarios to kill off a coffee break. Deadnaut recently came out with a patch that lets you adjust difficulty and now has unlockable campaign types, but is otherwise very much the same. My dream version of this would be to have actual people to direct from that little console you're stuck behind.

I started playing ADOM recently and bought it on steam today. Definitely scratches that roguelike itch, but could seriously use some cleaning up controls-wise. Today on a troll fighter I randomed, I was doing troll stuff and eating whatever was on the floor (except kobolds, too much trouble) and picking up pretty rocks and a pixie shows up. I immediately jump on the fucker and kill it, knowing from previous experience that they like to drop a lot (for the part of the game I'm in at least) of gold. The fucker left a corpse too. So I eat it. Cue me teleporting randomly every few turns and 'accidentally' stealing a ring of damage and a nice broadsword.
