I stand firmly on that belief as I've said in my blogs. However, life happens and people end up in some situations whereby you have to wonder how they get influenced into doing stupid poo poo. You know, like Hollywood.

Just received an invite to participate in the Crusader Playtest. I'm surprised because the only involvement I've had with this fiasco, besides lurking this thread, was kickstarting it for at the lowest level when the KS first launched. Are they just giving these invites out now?

CiG reminds me very much of one of my old jobs, working for dot-bomb fuckup Zden.com in 2001. Zden wanted to be the ebay for digital files, and even had their own currency (the Z). When I was taken on as webmaster/CS, there were 8 executives with little or no IT experience, and ONE part-time student programmer. The idiot execs had written a terrible brief, and hired dot-bomb fuckup MarchFirst to do the coding, giving them 6 weeks to provide the finished product. MarchFirst provided us a terribly written site without any documentation, and then went bankrupt a week or two afterwards. They also coded it using a Windows/MySQL platform, which our unpaid student intern had to transform it to run on IBM AIX/DB2 servers. It was a broken mess. Zden was hyped to gently caress, offering a 500 level ponzi referral scheme (paid out in Z's), and offered 500MB of online storage, which was pretty unheard of at the time. The CEO only allowed 24 hours for beta testing. With more than 2 people using the site, it simply ground to a halt, and nobody was able to test anything. Despite my protestations, the CEO went fully live the following day. There was no administrative back-end. To change any customer details, staff had to log into the DB2 backend as admin and update using SQL commands. I spent one of my first weeks there writing a usable CS backend in PHP, and had to really fight to be able to be allowed to do it. The competitions were a joke, and were rigged each time. In one instance, a few hours after a competition went live, I was ordered to completely change the competition details and rules so that a local guy in Paris could win it and be photographed for promotional material. Not a single person to my knowledge was ever able to cash out their 'Z's in to $$$'s - mainly because the company didn't have the funds to honour their promises. Zden did end up hiring two full time developers to try and fix the buggy site, but it was too little too late. For example, it was only discovered 8 months after launch that everyone shared the same java download class. This meant that you ended up downloading the digital file that the last person to hit the download button wanted. This explained why some people complained about downloading hardcore CP when they had selected a spreadsheet (we got hit by CP'ers, but even they gave up on the site as it didnt work). The CTO had very little IT experience... and even thought it was a good idea to install bonzi-buddy and comet cursor on all the exec's laptops. I lasted a year and a day in that hell-hole. When I found out that the megalomaniac CEO had persuaded his dad to cash in 90% of his pension plan to make payroll, I sent an email to the CEO (& cc'ing his dad) explaining the many issues with the site and my reluctance to take his dad's cash. I got fired the next day, and was quite thankful for it. /effortpost
