Seize Opportunity doesn't have to target a wall - you can just use it to clear a huge distance in places like the road skirmishes. Psychotossed weapons tend to deal a pretty respectable amount of damage.

If you've invested in Dungeon Dervish (you should invest in Dungeon Dervish) you'll also have Razor Fury and that charge skill for covering space, as well.

Let's talk about tactics.
Is there a good way in DoomRL to know if a monster can see you or not? Looking at people playing they make it seem too easy, never getting hit, always having perfect cover behind a corner. In my case I can only do it well when the monster is along the wall where I know he can't see me, but what about off the wall? How do you position yourself then?

Stelas
Sep 6, 2010

It's a cop-out answer but you kind of get a feel for it more and more as you play. A good guideline is to imagine a 45' line:

code:
     |..
-----|@.
..C../..
..../...
.../....
../.....
If the monster's behind that line you're probably okay, but this starts to break down further away from the wall.

Very roughly, and off the top of my head:

- At the start of the game, take Lucky x 3. That's my personal preference, some people swear by curse protection but I like a lot of luck.
- With that luck, go on a world tour. In each town, grab the fixed lucky medals that are just lying around - you'll end up with about 90 or so. Convert these into two bottles of water and a nice fat stack of superior material scrolls. Don't use them yet.
- Similarly, in each town except the lovely slum one, drink from the wells. With your luck, you should just about break even on general mutations and stat changes - quicksave and reload if you're really not feeling it, I guess - and pop a wish or two. Seven league boots come first since they'll let you do the higher reward delivery quests and cut down time in general. Evolution comes afterwards. Don't drink them yet, just collect them into a stack.
- Drop the two bottles of water onto an altar to bless them, then apply one to each stack.
- Eat your big pile of blessed potions of evolution.
- Use your big pile of blessed material scrolls on some decent equipment types to turn them into high-end armors and weapons that will be more than enough to carry you through early and even mid game.
- Complete the quest to get the icebox.
- Complete the quest to get pokeballs.
- Grab some ink, find a gold bell, toss ink at it 'til it gets poisoned. Wait a tick or two then lob a pokeball at it. Find a bow, hand it to the bell, watch everything die.
- If you get another wish from somewhere, happy bed. Bless it and you can get some really good dreams off of it.
- Just kinda go from there?

Stack and diversify Class Perks at all costs---you've got a few maps before any special lack of armor and speech defense will likely destroy you, so the skills to pay the shop upgrade bills in the interim are the greatest hope of all as you want to succeed on as many campaign map events as possible.

In other happenings, if you've ever had a hankering for some societal shenanigans and intrigue in your Roguelike machinations---Anamnesis, of Renascents and Monsters finally had a solid update again after well over a year now and there's really nothing quite like it: http://blog.anamnesis.co/

quote:

Previous savegames are not compatible.

Not even 16 months later, a new version of Anamnesis has arrived!

As those of you following the blog know, there have been a series of circumstances leading to me focusing on other matters. Presently I kind of have some free time to invest on the game, which might or might not change in the near future.

During the following days it'd be all about bugfixing and, if time allows it, adding some token new content. After that, I think it's about time to put up a new poll to ask you what you believe should be the new focus of development.

A lot of new systems have been added at once so you'll surely find bugs, just hopefully not the outcast limbo one, which has been fixed for the third or forth time now.

Enjoy the release!

Change Log:

-Espionage and Counterespionage: You can now Investigate/Stalk local aristocrats for a variety of outcomes, including personal gain, murder and blackmail. These events vary from one unit and aristocrat to each other. Likewise, some aristocrats will actually be double agents, amplifying any negative effect you suffer and making espionage harder for you, you'll have to investigate them to smoke the traitors out.
-Enhanced Local Aristocrats: They'll die or leave over time, have their own Merits and have lobby affiliations. You will also be able to control them through espionage or by buying their debts. Under your control, you'll be able to use their voting power if they are independent or otherwise help or hinder the lobby they belong to.
-Converting Enemy Units: Befriended Renascents will be available for all tasks at no cost, including combat. Other units can now also be converted by negotiating with them and spending some Merits, but their random events will remain the same, often negative ones for you.
-Lobby Affiliation: You can now be offered to join a lobby depending on the way your character is perceived by others. They will cast your votes in your name, but you'll receive a small amount of favours in exchange. Joining a lobby also generates positive and negative events into which you'll be pressured to partake least you lose favours in the lobby. Being in charge of said lobby will allow you to choose what to do in these events and often pocket plenty of money and Merits for yourself.
-Lobby Units and Proxy Forces: Lobbies now have independent units that aid or hinder you choosing to conquer or attack territories on their own if Local Tension is high enough. You can also employ these forces for military purposes or to carry projects out by spending favours owed to you by their lobby. Enemy lobbies might also form enemy armies if Local Tension is over 100.
-Raising Children and Cycle Continuity: Sometimes you will be given the chance to raise a child when wooing lovers. They might cost you Weariness and/or Arkhe on a weekly basis, but either they or their descendants have a chance to become friendly local aristocrats likely to help you in the next game cycle. Depending on how many successful aristocratic descendants you have, you'll start off in a better or worse position in the next cycle. If you have no descendants, you'll instead recover part of your previous cycle's wealth, allowing you to start better or worse off as well.
-You are now only shown 2 pieces at the start of each game, the rest will appear over time.
-You get to chose which stats will increase and decrease more readily at the beginning of the game. You can also choose them at random or chose to be bad at everything for extra fun.
-Pressing the "V" key in-game will activate the self-voicing feature, in this mode you can press up and down to read out the text on each object.
-Old bugs fixed and new bugs to be discovered!

Hero Siege is pretty swell---the dev has sworn to stop working on it about 4 or so times now(though they might mean it this time after this latest expansion), yet the patches and expansions have continued to roll in. Fair odds they've stretched GameMaker to the limit as far as this sort of game to boot---the multiplayer scene is a disaster as a loud contingent is sure the game is somehow "a scam" and a large factor in the dev's repeatedly mounting burnout, but the single player chaotic murderscape is on point.

Hi friends. I think it is time for a new thread. A ton has changed since the original OP of this one was written, and rather than update it I'd rather start fresh. I'm thinking of cutting it back a bit just because there are so many drat RLs these days. Gonna leave the big 5 games, some top picks of the newer wave, the best mobile, games by goons, and general RL resources.

So with that in mind... RL developers, list your games. I know URR (I think), Cogmind, DMans, Sproggiwood, CoQ... Am I missing anyone? The Dredmor guys are on SA too but I don't think they've ever actually posted in this thread.

To anyone else - know of good resources out there for learning more about RLs that aren't in the OP already?

Lastly, it's December, so time for a contest. Let's vote on SA's favorite roguelikes.

The rules are simple:

1) post or PM me a list of your top 10 favorite roguelikes, ordered from most to least
2) the deadline to post is December 24th
3) you can add honourable mentions if you want, you can comment on your selections if you want
4) you can add roguelike-likes if you want. I'd ask that you do not include games that don't have procedural level generation or permanent death, but RLs are like porn, you know it when you see it. I'm not here to judge
5) specify the platform(s) if you can

I'm going to use the favorites and honourable mentions list to determine what RLs to include in the next OP, so if there's something you want to include but it doesn't make your top 10, make sure to mention it.

Yeah, Teleglitch punishes the gently caress out of mistakes. And with some of the bosses, that mistake can be "looked at the boss". My two big hurdles were learning to conserve ammo and learning which enemies had guns. Still one of my favorites, though.

I just finished catching up on this thread to make this post. Thanks for putting Curious Expedition and Caves of Qud on my radar. I've been on a big roguelike kick lately, but with less traditional ones than the thread usually discusses... Invisible Inc, Darkest Dungeon, and Sunless Sea, to name a few. The Long Dark has been scratching that itch, too, though I guess the static levels put it on the fringes if at all.

I love talking about myself so here we go; (also all are PC)

1. Cataclysm DDA Sure it's got balance issues and some really questionable design choices, but I'm a sucker for scavenging and DDA has the best, seasons pass and you have to be prepared, you can trip out your vehicle of choice into an unstoppable deathmobile, or become a genetic abomination. Also I completely love the UI.
2. Unreal World Yo I just killed this elk by chasing it down until it almost died from exhaustion and now I have food for months and fur to wear so I don't die in the winter. Oh no it's a bear now I'm dead RIP.
3. IVAN Nice and simple and loads of fun, at this point I realize I have a strange taste in games.
4. Crypt of the Necrodancer A roguelike rhythm game. Sounds crazy, but it works incredibly well. No more do you have infinite time to make your decisions, now you must move and attack on the beat. All the monsters have different patterns and work the same way, also the music is rad. The real game begins when you play the 2x speed character.
5. Caves of Qud The skills/mutation system is fantastic and you can have some incredibly unique characters. I wish it had music because somehow this entirely 2D tile-based game is dripping in atmosphere. Can't wait to see how the steam version unfolds, I have been waiting for more CoQ for a long, hard time.
6.Elona This is as crazy as it gets. I really don't have anything else to say. Don't drink the fountain water. I like decorating my house.
7. Prospector Be the best worst Star Trek team you can be, kill entire planets for biodata you can sell to megacorps, buy a cool ship and then have your pilot fail to ever land it successfully, retire a poor man or die nameless and alone in space.
8. Brogue It's so pretty, not simple, but straight forward enough so I can just keep playing over and over again right away after I die to fire again.
9 One Way Heroics I haven't played it in a while but it's good! The world is constantly scrolling and you die if you fall off the map so like Crypt of the Necrodancer you have a time limit on your actions. Lots of unlocks!
10. Dungeons of Dredmor Pretty, funny, enjoyable, but rather basic and the crafting UI makes me want to die. But I like jokes enough for it to be here.

Honourable Mentions to
Dwarf Fortress
Liberal Crime Squad
FTL
Catacomb Kids
I love all these games but I don't know if I would call them roguelikes, for Dwarf Fortress in particular I only play fortress mode anyway. Catacomb Kids is procedurally generated, has permadeath, random equipment, but it's very action-y and more like Spelunky than anything else.

Also regular mentions to Rogue Survivor, an abandoned zombie roguelike where you're in a city and it's pretty cool but long dead and never finished. I hope I'm not the only one who played it.

Ok, here's my list.

1. FTL Just objectively, I've played more of this than anything else. 300+ hours. I love this game, it's the best, and if you think it's RNG, you're just bad at FTL. :colbert:
2. ADOM After FTL, I've played the most ADOM, and it's probably got the greatest structural influence on Caves of Qud. After designing games for many years, I basically hate the actual game design now; but
3. Crypt of the Necrodancer This game is just a lovely, ultra-modern design gem.
4. Rogue The progenitor. The design decisions it made still hold more water than most modern games.
5. Omega The second rogue-like I played extensively. I spent an awful lot of time wandering around the initial town and getting randomly mutated by vortexes. This experience had a heavy influence on Caves of Qud.
6. Alphaman A gamma world inspired roguelike? Get in my belly.
7. DoomRL Just a super-unique jewel of design.
8. Dungeon of the Endless This is another completely unique take, combining two previously unrelated game-types into a super cohesive whole. Even its writing is great.
9. Diablo 2 The best ARPG Roguelike.
10. Dwarf Fortess Does this count? I dunno if this counts. If it does it's #1, otherwise it's #10

Let's talk about tactics.
Oh man ranking roguelikes is a pretty hard thing for me who has a boner for almost every roguelike in existence... let's see

  1. Nethack - The game that started it all for me deserves this place. I'll never forget the sleepless nights spent playing on NAO while chatting in the nethack IRC. Good times.
  2. CataclysmDDA - The amount of poo poo you can do in this game is absurd and it makes my dick rock hard.
  3. Caves of Qud - I really love the theme, mutations are loving cool and it kicks my rear end super hard.
  4. DoomRL - Recently started playing it more seriously, I am the worst at it but it's unique and DOOM is my favourite FPS of all time. A mix made in heaven.
  5. ToME - I used to really hate the idea of a persistent overworld but the gameplay is just too good and the classes are loving amazing and unique. Still can't beat this one because I'm a lazy piece of poo poo who can't stick to a single roguelike without loving off to play another one.
  6. Sil - This game is everything I love about Angband minus everything I hate about it, Angband is not on this list because of those minus points.
  7. Crypt of the NecroDancer - Could be higher but I mostly treat it like a coffee break game that I pop a game of whenever I have any short amount of time of doing jack poo poo. Playing to music really gets me going and staying on the beat perfectly makes you feel awesome. The music is loving great.
  8. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - This is the second game I played a lot of after NetHack, not higher because I kinda treat it like an inferior NetHack (don't kill me for saying this). Cool class/race combos although they are slightly redundant
  9. Dungeons of Dredmor - Hilarious and really fun classes, don't know what else to say about it really though
  10. Just kidding here's Angband and its millions of variants - I really hated this game for a long time because I couldn't find good info on how to play it and it felt so different I couldn't manage it at all (still can't in a way). I'm not a huge fan of the whole diving thing and non-persistent levels but I must give credit where credit is due, I played Angband and its variants for longer than I'd like to admit. My favourite variants are ZAngband and ToME 2.x

Honorable mentions that I feel lovely for not including above because I haven't had the time to play them significantly (sorry goondevs):
  • Dungeonmans - I only bought it recently so I haven't played it yet but it looks amazing and I already love it even though I haven't played
  • Sproggiwood - Same as above, really. I bought them at the same time
  • Cogmind - I really want to play this but I can't afford it right now, pretty as gently caress and looks really fun.
  • ADOM - Never got around to it, learning new complicated roguelikes is a hassle sometimes and I just end up playing something else
  • UnReal World - Boggles the mind, hard as gently caress and slightly lazy about learning it.
  • Elona - I got drunk one time and tried getting this game and couldn't find where to download it (this was a long time ago when all the download sources were in japanese I think) so I just gave up and kinda forgot about it, bit too anime for my tastes as well
  • Brogue - I don't know
  • Prospector - This is really my kind of game, but for some reason I never played it
  • IVAN - The inability to legitly complete it puts me off a bit, but it's hilarious nonetheless.

Too lazy to properly include the roguelike-likes so here's a bunch I enjoy:
Rogue Legacy
The Binding of Isaac
FTL
Spelunky
Teleglitch
Diablo
Toejam & Earl
Probably a bunch I forgot about

Praise the Sun!
I just put these in the order of steam playtime since they are all great games for different reasons. That being said I suppose the ones I played longer are indicative of the ones I enjoyed more. Luckily since this thread is in its death throes nobody can call me out on my actiony roguelikes not being roguelikes.

1. Binding of Isaac Following Unormals format, I've played way more of this than any other procedurally generated gameso it goes at the top. I didn't even combine the two versions for this to be on top, both of them have more playtime individually than everything below it.
2. Rogue Legacy I've gone back and beat this game multiple times, it's just so good.
3. Desktop Dungeons Someone spilled puzzles in my roguelike and I love it. I don't think most people realize the little details that make this game great because you don't get into the truly maddening levels until much later in the game.
4. FTL Game is really good, and not luck based at all, that being said I wish there was a different win condition beyond fighting the mega ship.
5. Dungeons of Dredmor A bit of a slog but it's still a very good game, I even beat it once! (After playing for countless hours)
6. One Way Heroics I found out about this game from this thread, and I absolutely love it. Maniac mode is the only way to play, but this one can end up taking ages as well.
7. Spelunky This game is literally perfect. It's only so low on the list because I played the freeware version more than the actual release.
8. Don't Starve I've certainly ragequit this game more than any other on my list, but then I kept playing it, so that says something.
9 Risk of Rain I hated this game at first because I didn't understand it, games good I was just being terrible and trying to 100% every level.
10. Vagante Still in early access but amazing even in its current state. Waiting for the full release before I put an ungodly amount of time into it.

Awesome!

4) ftl - i like naming my crew after sa posters. this makes it funnier when they all suffocate trying to repair the drat o2 system.
5) dungeon of the endless - a genre mashup that ends up working really well like necrodancer. havent tried the co-op yet but it sounds cool and i will one of these days. they keep putting out free content updates with their dlc too.
6) nuclear throne - more arcadey than boi id say. the upgrade system isnt as deep but if you want fast paced roguelite action look no further
7) dmans - when i want to play tome but dont really want to play tome i play this instead. actually i think you (op) gave me this one and i have put like a whole day of my life into it so far, so thanks.
8) desktop dungeons - a tough puzzle game dressed up as a roguelike. short puzzles/dungeons so you can squeeze one in at lunch and then think about how you failed horribly at it for the rest of the day.
9) sproggiwood - its cute. it will also kill you a lot. gameplay loop is set up more like desktop dungeons than a normal roguelike which you may prefer for short sessions
10) risk of rain - as the game goes on the difficulty bar rises. the top level is "HAHAHAHA" which is think accurately conveys the game's lust for your death. the different classes are unique and fun to play although some are rather weak solo and excel in co-op

towerclimb will probably make it on there easily when i get around to buying it

1) ADOM: Despite having god awful controls, still is ridiculously fun to play, especially with how indepth things can get. You can eat yourself too (dopplegangers) if you're hungry enough.

2) TOME(Tales of Maj'Eyal): The game isn't afraid to let you feel a little overpowered but at the same time is willing to put you in your place. All the classes are pretty unique in playstyle and concept while trying to avoid some of the classic class cliches, like Brawlers being the 'Monk' class, but focuses more on you just straight up punching the poo poo out of dudes and even pulling a few wrasslin' moves on them. You can also play as a Paradox Mage and make guys cease to exist as one of their abilities and gently caress with multiple time lines at once while calling in for backup in the form of your future self to kill the poo poo out of guys (then have to go back into the past to help yourself at that moment too). The only downside is that the beginning is always the same; do all the newbie dungeons for each race, then all the other dungeons, then Dreadfel. It would be better if it took an approach like ADOM or other games where doing one locks you out of the others while also giving you exp to make up the difference. Overall, it's a very easy to get into roguelike that does a good job of easing new players into the genre with how the class unlock system works. I only have it rated lower than ADOM because it has less random bullshit to change things up.

3) Neo-Scavenger: So, okay, get this. You wake up from cryosleep in the future and find a wide open wilderness with derelict buildings everywhere. You're naked except for a hospital gown. Your most important early resource are grocery bags, slowly going up to bigger and bigger bags as you hobo your way through the game, fending off wild dogs by threatening them, or kicking them to death (or using an improvised weapon, I'm not your mom/dad/parental figure). This game is Hobo Simulator 2015 basically and it's loving great. Find some berries in the woods? Uh-oh, you have a bad case of diarrhea now and are making GBS threads yourself to death! Also get annoyed as the flip flop on your right foot falls off and you miss the message telling you, so now you're walking around with only one shoe on and oh my loving god blisters- IS THAT A loving GOD drat WEREWOLF!? Little lighter on random events, but hey, you can pretend to be retarded at one point, so this game easily makes #3 for me.

4) FTL: While actually being a rogue-lite, it still has a lot of fun random elements and events with multiple different outcomes. Venting all the air out of areas of the ship enemy boarders have teleported into will never not be fun.

5) Dungeons of Dredmor: I somehow got nearly 500 hours in this before finding TOME or ADOM. It's still a good game, but it can crash for odd reasons, has no auto-explore and heavily favours certain skill loadouts over others. Still ridiculously goofy and has some good steamworks mods. The latest (and final) expansion added its own kind of 'mutation' mechanic in in the form of encrusting. Yes they liberally make jokes ingame about the name of it, yes, even sea men. I have never beaten this and refuse to play on anything but Going Rogue (highest difficulty).

6) The Binding of Isaac (Rebirth): Another rogue-lite, but addictive as all hell. Basically it's like a mix of Smash T.V and the top over levels of Contra. It can sometimes suck rear end when they game hands you nothing but lemons, but is pretty rewarding when you figure out the mechanics of the game to maximize the amount of power ups you're getting.

7) Dwarf Fortress: I still don't know what I'm doing.

8) Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup: I only have it ranked this low because I haven't played it nearly enough. It's like ADOM in a lot of ways, but it's more streamlined in progression, with you focusing getting to the bottom floor and making it back up to the top with a wondrous artifact. The races are pretty unique and varied, changing the game up as much as the class you pick and it includes one of the most 'roguelike' classes ever, the Chaosknight, or rather one that follows a specific god. If you've played this before, you know the one. It's pretty easy to hop into and just have a good time or spectate other people's games if you're using the browser version. Like I said, I haven't played nearly enough of it, but poo poo can get pretty crazy. Also it has Sigurd. Don't know who he is? Play this game and go hang out with him. :unsmigghh:

9) Dungeon of the Endless: More of a rogue-lite than anything, but a fairly fun hybrid of roguelike mechanics and tower defense. The game is hectic and unrelenting with enemy waves, forcing you to think on your feet to avoid having your heroes die and come up with a game plan as to how to spend your limited resources. There are multiple heroes that fill specific roles, but they all have their own quirks to get them from feeling samesy. One example is Gork being a slow dude that can be used to hold chokepoints and taunt enemies so that they focus him instead of squishier heroes/modules in the room and Elise sort of being the same thing, except can boost the amount of resources you get if she stays in the same room as a resource producing module for more than a turn while also getting many defensive bonuses and a room clearing attack. There's also specific hero matchups that will have a unique story together with it usually ending giving them both a new passive. It also has co-op which makes it easier to micromanage things. Also the aesthetic and music are loving great.

10) Sword of The Stars: The pit. : Hahaha, I'm not even going to bother. It can be fun at times, but overall it has a lot of problems mechanically and thematically.

Look, I'm startin' to believe some of the stuff the cult guy's been saying, it's starting to make a lot of sense.

Madjackmcmad, I believe. I may have been misreading his username all these years, though!

It's me! And Dungeonmans is my game, correct.

Jordan, I will do my tiny microbitching like I did last time you wanted to trash a thread and say: "Hey man, we can't let old roguelikes vanish away :(" Cutting roguelikes out because not enough people play them seems... weird? Cause this is a niche anyway, and shouldn't we be serving the niche AND the niche members of the niche?

That said, thank you for doing the work organizing and maintaining the list of games, and if you do the same thing you did last time where you offer up a bounty of game keys to people who write quality blurbs about RLs for the OP, I will pitch in some Dungeonmans keys for you.

Here's the list of Roguelikes in the Dungeonmans credits. I could certainly improve upon it.

Obviously I'm going to vote for the 2013 roguelike of the year, Noxico.

It's a furry sex game.
